Definitions

  • This invention generally relates to an audio recording device and, more particularly, to a solid state audio recording device for recording a fetal heartbeat from a doppler device.
  • Ultrasonic dopplers have been in use since the late 1950's and early 1960's to detect the fetal heartbeats in early stages of pregnancy, long before use of an ordinary stethoscope is practical for that purpose.
  • Dopplers use high frequency sound waves that reflect off of the fetal heart and then are received, processed and amplified by the doppler device for evaluating the detected heartbeat.
  • Doppler ultrasound devices are regulated by the FDA as a medical device, and until recently, these devices were available to expectant women only in doctors' offices, such as during routine obstetrical visits. Years of studies have shown no adverse biological or health effects from the use of ultrasonic dopplers on the fetus.
  • dopplers there are a number of dopplers available for use in the detection of fetal heartbeats. At times, expectant parents may desire to record the fetal heartbeat for any number of reasons, including, for example, review by a doctor or nurse for diagnostic purposes, and keepsake purposes. To achieve such recordings, parents have employed tape recorders or the like in the vicinity of the doppler. Often, the audio quality of the recorded heartbeat is poor due to ambient noise, to limitations of the recording device, etc. A recent addition to some dopplers is an internal recorder for facilitating the recording and saving of the doppler output. However, to permanently save and retain a recorded heartbeat, the device user must disadvantageously resort to either purchasing the doppler device, which may cost on the order of several hundred dollars, or transferring the recording to a tape recorder or like device, which may result in poor audio quality.
  • Doppler devices with or without built-in recording functionality have not been built to include an output terminal for transferring the recorded material because electronic devices that may be connected to such an output terminal may not be compatible with the doppler. Plus, such electrical devices are not designed or approved for use as part of a medical system, such as hand-held dopplers. As such, virtually no doppler provider recommends connecting a doppler directly into a powered electronic device since serious damage may occur to the doppler and/or the electronic device due to potential electrical faults, interference, etc.
  • the only terminal that may be included in dopplers is a head phone terminal.
  • an audio recording device is needed that is capable of interfacing with a doppler device for recording a fetal heartbeat.
