Definitions
- the invention relates to a sealing system for an electrical connector and, more particularly, for a multi-pin electrical connector.
- This sealing system is intended, in particular, to guarantee the tightness of the connector around the electrical connection wires, at the rear of the connector, that is to say in an area of the connector where the electrical wires are not not inserted into the connection pins.
- the invention finds applications in the field of electrical or electronic connectors and, in particular, in the field of electrical connectors intended for the automobile. State of the art
- multi-pin electrical connectors are used in many technical fields. These multi-pin connectors are designed to receive several connection pins, male or female, in each of which is crimped an electrical connection wire.
- the multi-pin electrical connectors comprise a plastic body comprising several housings each intended to receive a connection pin. Inside the plastic body is housed a grommet type seal, crossed by several connection wires which each terminate in one of the different connection pins.
- This grommet-type joint more simply called a grommet, is generally provided with channels into which the connection wires are introduced.
- a grommet channel in the extension of each housing of the plastic body of the connector, this channel being located at the rear of the connector.
- the role of the grommet is to seal the connector by preventing humidity or dust from entering the connector from the rear of the connector.
- each connection pin crimped around a connection wire is inserted into a housing of the plastic body and the connection wire is inserted into the grommet channel.
- the connection pins are housed in the front part of the connector and the electrical wires in the rear part of the connector.
- the introduction pins in the front of the connector is from the back of the connector.
- the connection pins must pass through the channels of the grommet to find themselves in their housings.
- the pins often have a square section and not a round section like electrical wires.
- the grommet channels have a round section, it is difficult to pass the pins through the channels.
- the channels of the grommet have a square section, then the seal at the level of the electrical wires is no longer ensured by the grommet.
- This sealing device relates to a connector 1 provided with a grommet 2 made of an elastic material and provided with channels 3 , or through holes, allowing the passage of the pins 4 and the connection wires 5.
- the channels 3 are provided with lips 6 allowing the passage of the pins equipped with their connection wires and closing on these wires, when the pins are passed , to ensure a seal at the wires.
- This device comprises two types of lips: peripheral lips which ensure a peripheral seal against the walls of the rear part of the connector and internal lips which ensure sealing near the connection pins.
- Such a device correctly seals the connector at the level of the passage of the connection wires, when the section of the connection wires is of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pins.
- the cross-section of the connection wires is significantly less than the cross-section of the connection pins and, more precisely, when it is not of the same order of magnitude as the cross-section of the connection pins, then the passage of said pins of connection attacks the lips of the grommet channels which, after their passage, can no longer sufficiently tighten the connection wires to guarantee sufficient tightness. This is in particular the case when the ratio between the section of a connection pin and the section of the connection wire is greater than 2.
- connection pins have a width of 2.8 mm and the connection wires have a section of 0.22 mm 2 . In this case, it is not possible to obtain a seal around the electrical wires by the device described above.
- the object of the invention is precisely to remedy the drawbacks of the techniques described above.
- the invention provides a sealing system for a multi-pin electrical connector comprising, on the one hand, a multi-pin seal of the grommet type and, on the other hand, a unitary seal placed around the connection wire and housed at the inside the multi-pin joint, when the connection wire has a section which is not of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin.
- the invention relates to a sealing system for an electrical connector comprising a multi-pin joint having several channels passing right through the joint and intended to receive an electrical connection wire, characterized in that it comprises, in furthermore, at least one unitary joint of tubular shape, partially surrounding the connection wire and inserted at least partly into one of the channels of the multi-spindle joint.
- the unitary seal comprises, over at least part of its length, sealing lips coming into pressure against the channel of the multi-spindle seal; the channel comprises, over at least part of its length, sealing lips coming into pressure against the connection wire.
- Figure 1 already described, shows a rear sealing device for a multi-pin electrical connector, according to the prior art.
- FIG. 2 shows the sealing system for a multi-pin electrical connector according to the invention, in the case where the connection wire is of small cross section.
- FIG. 3 represents the sealing system for a multi-pin electrical connector according to the invention, in the case where the wire connection has a section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin.
- FIG. 4 represents a unitary seal of the sealing system of the invention.
- FIG. 5 represents a multi-spindle seal of the sealing system of the invention.
- Figure 6 shows a sectional view of a sealing system according to the invention.
- FIG. 2 there is shown, in a side view in section, a multi-pin electrical connector provided with the sealing system of the invention.
- This electrical connector 1 comprises a plastic body 8 itself comprising several housings 7a, 7b, 7c, ... each intended to receive a connection pin 4 in which a connection wire 5 is crimped.
- the connection pin 4 is a female pin comprising:
- Each housing 7a, 7b, 7c, etc. can receive a connection pin similar to pin 4 or a different connection pin such as, for example, a male connection pin.
- connection pins are each crimped around an electrical connection wire which may have a section of small diameter, of an order of magnitude less than the section of the connection pin, as is the case for the connection wire. 5 crimped into the connection pin 4.
- these connection pins can also be crimped each around a connection wire having a section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin.
- the sealing system of the connector 1 comprises, on the one hand, a multi-pin joint 10 of the grommet type, also called grommet, and, on the other hand, one or more unitary joints 20.
- the multi-pin joint 10 comprises several channels 1 1 each crossed by a connection wire 5. More specifically, the multi-pin joint 10 comprises a channel placed at the rear of the connector, at the end of each housing 7a, 7b, 7c, ... of the connector . Thus, each channel is crossed by the connection wire which ends in the connection pin housed in the housing located in the extension of the channel considered.
- the sealing system of the invention comprises as many unitary seals as there are electrical wires having a small cross-section. relative to the section of the connection pin in which it is crimped.
- Each channel 1 1 of the multi-spindle seal 10 has two parts, namely a front part 1 1 a and a rear part 11 b.
- the front part 11a is the part closest to the connection pin; it has a Sa section, smooth.
- the rear part 11b is the part closest to the rear of the connector; it has a section Sb.
- the front part 11a is intended to receive the unitary seal 20.
- the rear part 11b is intended to receive the connection wire 5.
- the two sections Sa and Sb therefore preferably have different dimensions adapted to the section of the item they receive.
- the rear section Sb has external sealing lips 12.
- sealing lips 12 are intended to come into pressure against the electrical connection wire 5 in order to prevent the penetration of moisture or dust into the connector, along this wire 5.
- the unitary seal 20 includes internal sealing lips 21 intended to come into pressure against the smooth section Sa of the front part of the channel 1 1. In other words, these sealing lips 21 ensure the sealing in the seal multi-spindle, at the joint level.
- the unitary seal 20 may also have a smooth section, not visible in this figure because it is inserted in the rear part 4c of the connection pin 4.
- the unitary seal 20 surrounds the connection wire 5 on its part close to the pin of connection. It can also surround the wire 5 in the zone which is introduced into the rear part 4c of the connection pin 4. In this way, the reception of the wire 5 by the connection pin is stiffened, which facilitates the introduction of the pin into the connector 1. It is understood that the unitary seal surrounds the connection wire, in an area where the connection wire is not stripped.
- the seal in the connector 1 is ensured by the pressure of the outer lips 12 of the multi-pin seal 10 on the connection wire 5 and / or by the pressure of the inner lips 21 of the seal unitary 20 on the walls of the channel 11 of the multi-spindle seal 10.
- connection wire 5 has a cross section greater than that of FIG. 2, that is to say a cross section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin 4.
- the connection wire 5 has a section less than 1 mm 2 while in the case of Figure 3, it has a section greater than 1 mm 2 .
- connection wire 5 since the connection wire 5 has a section of the same order of magnitude as the section of the connection pin 4, it is not useful to use a unitary seal 20. Indeed, since the wire 5 has a section which is close to that of the connection pin 4, the passage of the pin in the channel 11 is not likely to deteriorate the quality of the pressure of the external lips 12 on the wire 5. The external lips 12 therefore ensure well the tightness of the connector. It is thus understood that, in the case where the connection wire has a cross-section close to that of the connection pin, it is the multi-pin seal which ensures the tightness of the connector by the existence of its sealing lips 12. On the other hand, when the connection wire is of smaller cross-section than that of the connection pin, then it is the unitary seal 20 surrounding the connection wire which seals the connector by means of its sealing lips. 21.
- FIG. 4 represents the unitary seal 20 surrounding a connection wire 5 and introduced into a connection pin 4.
- the connection pin has been shown seen from the back, thus showing its rear part 4c which serves to receive the seal unit 20.
- This figure also shows the section smooth 22 of the unitary seal 20, that is to say the section which has no sealing lip.
- This section 22 can be introduced into the spindle 4 or simply come into abutment against the receiving part 4c of the spindle.
- the rear section 23 of the unitary seal 20 has internal sealing lips 21, for example three in number. Section 22 of the unitary seal may have a dimension greater than that of section 23, excluding sealing lips.
- Such a unitary seal 20 has the advantage of increasing the cross-section of the connection wire 5, when this is reduced. A pressure between the multi-pin joint and the connection wire can thus take place, via the unitary joint which then seals in the connector.
- FIG. 5 shows an example of a multi-spindle seal which can be used in the sealing system of the invention.
- This multi-spindle seal 10, or grommet is made of an elastic and waterproof material. It comprises a plurality of channels which can have different shapes and several dimensions. The channels can have a round section like the channel 11 described above or else square like the channels 13 and 14. The shapes and dimensions of the channels depend on the types of pins and wires used for the connections to be made.
- the multi-spindle joint of the invention can be produced in two plates 10a and 10b positioned one on the other so that their channels are in concordance.
- FIG. 6 represents a top view in section of a connector comprising the sealing system of the invention.
- This FIG. 6 shows the channel 11 of the multispindle joint 10 in section with, inside, the connection wire 5 surrounded by the unitary joint 20.
- the smooth section 22 of the unitary joint is inserted into the receiving part 4c of the pin 4 and the lip section 21 is housed in the front part 11a of the channel 11. It can be seen in this FIG. 6 that the smooth section 22 of the unitary seal is not in contact with the walls of the channel 11.
- This section 22 has only role of facilitating the insertion and the maintenance of the connection wire 5 in the connection pin 4.
- the lips 21 of the unitary seal 20 have a section greater than the section of the channel 11 of the multi-spindle seal, which explains why the lips 21 are in permanent pressure against the walls of the channel, thus ensuring sealing in the connector. .
- the rear part in the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, the rear part
- connection wire of small section and provided with a unitary seal, or a connection wire of larger section without seal unit.
