Abstract

A system and method of detecting a fluid leak (10) in a pipe (4), which method comprises providing a distributed temperature sensor system (6), which includes a sensing optical fibre (8) that extends in the general direction of the pipe (4) and in the vicinity of the pipe (4), the method being such that the distributed temperature sensor system (6) detects via the sensing optical fibre (8) temperature changes which are caused by a fluid leaking from a leak (10) in the pipe (4). A reagent (30) is placed in the vicinity of the pipe (4), and the reagent (30) reacts with the fluid leaking from the leak (10) in the pipe (4) to cause a temperature change that is detected by the distributed temperature sensor system (6).
