Definitions
- Embodiments of the invention relate to collapsible lampshades.
- KD lampshades have typically been used for relatively informal lampshades, such as those made of paper and relatively inexpensive fabric, as opposed to silk or other higher-quality material.
- Conventional KD lampshades have become generally accepted by consumers, when used with lamps of an informal or contemporary style.
- no KD shade that is generally acceptable for use with more traditional, higher-end lamp styles. This is because no KD shade maker has adequately solved the aesthetic and mechanical problems previously associated with a collapsible-lampshade structure.
- These conventional KD shades typically have significant aesthetic or mechanical shortcomings, which prevent their widespread use with higher quality fabrics, such as linen and silk.
- KD lampshades require wires, springs, or other supporting structures, that are not enclosed within the fabric of the shade itself, and are therefore readily visible and unsightly. This has proven unappealing to consumers.
- Other designs may have concealed frames, but, when expanded, cannot support the fabric shell sufficiently, so that the fabric ends up not taut, not smooth, and crooked.
- conventional KD shades may not lock into a stiff structure, leaving the shade undesirably flexible and flimsy. Still other KD shades are difficult for the consumer to expand or assemble.
- a collapsible lampshade in accordance with various inventive principles, overcomes the shortcomings described above.
- a collapsible lampshade of this type may be self- contained, and may not require assembly involving any separate parts.
- the shade can be collapsed so that the shade's height is advantageously minimized for shipping.
- the shade may then be reliably and easily extended and locked by the consumer to form an exceptionally strong structure, with taut stretched inner and outer fabric thereby concealing the shade's collapsibility.
- a collapsible lampshade in accordance with various embodiments of the invention, looks like a normal (non-collapsible) lampshade.
- the main components of a collapsible-lampshade frame are the: top spider (which holds the shade to the lamp body via a finial on top), top ring, bottom ring, and collapsible articulated ribs each of which may include ring pivots (top) and (bottom), and a center pivot.
- the collapsible articulated ribs may articulate with pivot joints in at least three places per rib. This allows each rib to be folded and unfolded easily and allows the lampshade to collapse within its own space.
- the ribs may have stops, which restrict their pivoting joints from overextending. Stops of this type ensure that the ribs will be unfolded to the correct extended position by the consumer.
- the central rib pivot joint may have a locking mechanism, which may be a sliding sleeve, a spring-loaded sliding sleeve, or any other suitable device. Such a locking mechanism ensures that, once the shade is expanded into its normal-expanded position, the shade will not accidentally collapse or lose rigidity.
- Ring-pivot mounts may be formed by stamp cutting and bending (or twisting) tabs from stamp-cut banding (e.g., the top ring and the bottom ring). Tabs may also be formed by stamp cutting and removing unwanted material from a length of stock. The unwanted material may be judiciously removed in sections, and tabs may be formed from the material that remains. Alternatively, the top and bottom rings may be formed with protruding tabs for the ring pivots.

- Figures 5A and 5B show a center pivot with a tab and a slot in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
- Figures 6 A and 6B show a center pivot with a button and a hole in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
- Figures 7A-7C show a collapsible-lampshade frame in a collapsed-shipping position, an intermediate position, and a normal-expanded position, respectively.
- Figures 7A-7C show an illustrative embodiment of a collapsible-lampshade frame 100 in a collapsed-shipping position, an intermediate position, and a normal-expanded position, respectively.
- the main components of a collapsible-lampshade frame 100 are the: top spider 106 (which holds the shade to the lamp body via a finial on top), top ring 104, ring pivots 110 (top) and 116 (bottom), pivot stops 114, bottom ring 118, center pivots 112, joint sleeves 108, and collapsible articulated ribs 102.
- center pivots 112 may comprise offset joints, which have offset hinges, as shown Figures 3, 4, and 5.
- the offset manner in which the upper-rib segment 120 and the lower-rib segment 122 rotate about hinge 306 allows the rib segments on either side of such an offset center pivot joint (e.g., upper-rib segment 120 and lower-rib segment 122) to be folded parallel to each other. This, in turn, allows the articulated ribs 102 to substantially fully collapse to minimize packaging volume required for shipping.
- top-ring pivots 110 and bottom-ring pivots 116 may also comprise offset joints.
- Figures 3A and 3B show a center pivot 112 with a U-shaped sliding sleeve 302 that slides within grooves 304-1 and 304-2 in the lower-rib segment 122 and the upper-rib segment 120, in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
- the U-shaped sliding sleeve 302 slides in the respective grooves 304-2 and 304-1 in the upper-rib segment 120 and the lower-rib segment 122 into a position in which the sliding sleeve 302 prevents the upper-rib segment 120 and the lower-rib segment 122 from rotating about the center pivot's hinge 306.
- FIGS 4A-4D show a center pivot 112 with a spring clip 402 in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
- the spring clip 402 may be attached to either the upper- rib segment 120 or the lower-rib segment 122.
- the rib segment to which the spring clip 402 is not attached moves into the spring clip 402 as the collapsible-lampshade frame 100 is expanded from the collapsed-shipping position to the normal-expanded position.
- the spring clip 402 then retains the rib segment to which the spring clip 402 is not attached (e.g., the upper-rib segment 120 in as shown in Figures 4B and 4D) thereby preventing the rib segments from rotating about the center pivot's hinge 306.
- FIGS 5A and 5B show a center pivot with a tab 502 and a slot 504 in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
- the tab 502 may be on either the upper-rib segment 120 or the lower-rib segment 122.
- a complementary slot 504 may be formed in the rib segment that does not have the tab 502.
- the tab 502 gets inserted into the slot 504 as the collapsible-lampshade frame 100 is expanded from the collapsed-shipping position to the normal-expanded position.
- the tab 502 and the slot 504 prevent the upper-rib segment 120 and the lower-rib segment 122 from rotating about the center pivot's hinge 306.
- FIGS 6 A and 6B show a center pivot 112 with a button 602 and a hole 604 in accordance with various embodiments of the invention.
- the button 602 may be on either the upper-rib segment 120 or the lower-rib segment 122 and a complementary hole 604 may be formed in the rib segment that does not have the button.
- the button 602 gets inserted into the hole 604 as the collapsible-lampshade frame 100 is expanded from the collapsed-shipping position to the normal-expanded position.
- the button 602 and the hole 604 prevent the upper-rib segment 120 and the lower-rib segment 122 from rotating about the center pivot's hinge 306.
- the collapsible articulated ribs 102 articulate with pivot joints (e.g., top-ring pivot 110, center pivot 112, and bottom-ring pivot 116) in at least three places per rib. This allows each rib 102 to be folded and unfolded easily and allows the lampshade to collapse within its own space.
- the ribs may have stops (e.g., pivot stops 114), which restrict their pivoting joints from overextending. Stops of this type ensure that the ribs will be unfolded to the correct extended position by the consumer.
- the central rib pivot joint 112 may have a locking mechanism, which may be a sliding sleeve (examples of which are depicted in Figures 1 A, 3A, and 3B), a spring- loaded sliding sleeve (an example of which is depicted in Figures ID and IE), or any other suitable device.
- a locking mechanism ensures that, once the shade is expanded into its normal-expanded position, the shade will not accidentally collapse or lose rigidity.
- a locking mechanism which operates automatically when the shade is expanded from its collapsed orientation, may be used and will advantageously simplify assembly of the lamp by a consumer.
- the collapsible articulated ribs 102 may have a single locking mechanism per rib. This is possible because, once one of the pivots (i.e., any one of top-ring pivot 110, center pivot 112, and bottom-ring pivot 116) is locked, the other two pivots can no longer move, and are thus effectively locked as well.
- a shade frame may contain as many ribs as needed for each particular style or shade design. Lampshades typically have at least three ribs.
- the shade frame 100 may be entirely concealed.
- the frame may be sandwiched between im er and outer fabric layers of the shade.
- the shade, including the shade frame, may be self-contained.
- the parts may be integral, with no additional or separate parts being required.
- ring-pivot mounts 202 and 202' may be formed by stamp cutting and bending (or twisting) tabs from stamp-cut banding 200 and 200' (e.g., the top ring 104 and the bottom ring 118) in the manner shown in Figures 2A-2D.
- Tabs may also be formed by stamp cutting and removing unwanted material 204 and 204' from a length of stock. The unwanted material 204 and 204' may be judiciously removed in sections, and tabs may be formed from the material that remains.
- the top and bottom rings may be formed with protruding tabs for the ring pivots.
