Abstract

In a ventricular assist device system (VAD) (10), ventricular suction detection methods monitor or derive the blood flow waveform and analyze the waveform to detect suction. Suction is determined based on asymmetry of the flow waveform, plateaus in the flow waveform, and the slew rate of the flow waveform. Additionally, in accordance with other detection methods, the blood flow rate is analyzed to determine suction based on the mean flow rate falling to a predetermined low level and/or the relationship between minimum, mean and minimum flow. In accordance with still further detection methods, suchtion is determined bases on saddle sequences (i.e. localized minimums or notches) in the falling arch of the flow peak.
