Definitions
- the present invention relates to a collapsible container for transport and storage.
- Containers made from different materials such as wood, metal, plastic etc. are frequently used.
- One problem with such containers are that they often demand the same transport volume when returned to the source as when delivered with goods.
- An alternative to the return transport is a so-called one way package which is disposed of after delivery.
- Another common way to solve the problem is to provide the package with a so-called nesting function. This means that empty containers are partly placed in one another, by providing the containers with sloping sides.
- a disadvantage with this type of container is that the load carrying ability is radically impaired when compared to solid, non-collapsible containers. This is mainly due to the fact that the corner parts, on non-collapsible containers taking up around 80% of the weight from above, are parted on collapsible containers. Since these load carrying corners are parted on collapsible containers, this will have to be compensated for by adding reinforcing ribs on the sides. This will, besides added weight, also cause difficulties when cleaning the container due to the number of small pockets that are formed between the ribs. It is also important to have a firm lock between the side walls. It is also known that these locks will loose some of their locking force after being used some time. This is not desired.
- the invention relates to a collapsible container for transport and storage, comprising a bottom part and inwards foldable side walls.
- the different parts are manufactured through injection moulding of a thermoplastic material.
- the side walls are movably connected to the bottom part via hinges.
- Two first side walls, placed on opposite sides, preferably the two long-side walls, are provided with outer angled edges at each of their two vertical ends.
- the angled edges connect with corresponding inner edges on adjoining side walls, preferably the short-side walls, when in an upright position.
- the edges are each provided with resilient coupling devices which are intended to interact with each other so that the side walls can be locked together in an upright position.
- the resilient coupling devices are constituted by a female resilient coupling device arranged on the inner edges and a male resilient coupling device arranged on the outer angled edges.
- the resilient coupling devices are constituted by a female resilient coupling device arranged on the outer angled edges and a male resilient coupling device arranged on the inner edges.
- the female resilient coupling device preferably comprises a hole with at least one adjacent resilient rib, which rib is provided with an undercut and a guiding flank.
- the female resilient coupling device is further suitably provided with adjacent support ribs.
- the male resilient coupling device preferably comprises at least one flexible locking rib which rib is provided with a heel and possibly a guiding surface.
- the female resilient coupling device is provided with a first adjacent resilient rib provided with an undercut and a guiding flank and a second adjacent resilient rib also provided with an undercut and a guiding flank.
- the second adjacent resilient rib is arranged on an opposite edge of the hole as related to the first adjacent resilient rib.
- Support ribs are suitably arranged on the two remaining edges of the hole. These support ribs may be separated from the two resilient ribs by a gap.
- the support ribs may alternatively be connected to the resilient ribs via a thin wall section which is less than half as thick as the thickness of the resilient ribs.
- the support ribs are suitably also thicker than the thin wall sections.
- the male resilient coupling device is according to the same embodiment provided with a first flexible locking rib and a second flexible locking rib arranged to match the position of the first and second resilient ribs of the female resilient coupling device.
- the first and second flexible locking ribs are suitably connected to each other via a spring section.
- the centre of this spring section may suitably be connected to the surface on which the first and second flexible locking ribs are arranged.
- the coupling devices are preferably manufactured in one piece together with the short-side walls.
- the hinges are formed by a number of lower hinge-parts which are manufactured in one piece together with the bottom part and a number of upper hinge-parts which are manufactured in one piece together with the foldable side walls.
- the edges are suitably also provided with a number of clutching means which are intended to interact with corresponding clutching means placed at the ends of the adjoining side walls so that the side walls can be locked together in respect of shearing forces when in an upright position.
- a container of this type can suitably be made from a polymer material like polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, polystyrene, acryle-butadiene-styrene, poly-alkylene-terephthalate or the like.
- At least two opposite side walls are suitably provided with handle openings close to their respective upper sides.
- the handle openings are placed so that the reinforcing profiles form the grip of the handle.
- the bottom part is preferably, as seen from above, provided with recessed support profiles along the edges.
- the support profiles are usually provided with draining holes.
- the lower surface of said support profiles forms the support surface of the container.
- the support profiles also limit sideways shifting when containers are stacked upon one-another.
- the long-side walls are preferably provided with inwards recessed sections at their lower edges, as seen when in an upright position. The recesses are intended to receive the support profiles when containers are stacked with the side walls in a down-folded position.
- -figure 1 shows, in cross-section, a part of a collapsible container with resilient coupling devices 5.
- -figure 2 shows, in perspective, a collapsible container.
- Figure 1 shows, in cross-section, a part of a collapsible container with resilient coupling devices 5 according to the invention.
- the collapsible container comprises a bottom part 2 (see figure 2) and inwards foldable side walls 1 (see figure 2).
- the different parts 1, 2 are manufactured through injection moulding of a thermoplastic material.
- the side walls 1 are movably connected to the bottom part 2 via hinges.
- Two first side walls 1, arranged on opposite sides forming long side walls 1', 1" (see figure 2), are provided with outer angled edges 4 1 (see figure 2) at each of their two vertical ends.
- the angled edges 4 1 connect with corresponding inner edges 4" (see figure 2) on adjoining side walls 1 forming short-side walls l m and 1 IV (see figure 2) respectively when in an upright position.
- the edges 4 1 and 4" respectively are each provided with resilient coupling devices 5 which are intended to interact with each other so that the side walls 1 can be locked together in an upright position.
- the resilient coupling devices 5 are constituted by a female resilient coupling device 5 1 arranged on the inner edges 4" and a male resilient coupling device 5" arranged on the outer angled edges 4 1 .
- the female resilient coupling device 5 1 is provided with a first adjacent resilient rib 61' provided with an undercut 62 and a guiding flank 63.
- a second adjacent resilient rib 61" also provided with an undercut 62 and a guiding flank 63 is arranged on an opposite edge of the hole 60 as related to the first adjacent resilient rib 61 1 .
- Support ribs 64 are arranged on the two remaining edges of the hole 60. These support ribs 64 may be separated from the two resilient ribs 61" and 61" respectively by a gap as shown in the drawing.
- the support ribs 64 may alternatively be connected to the resilient ribs 61' and 61" respectively via a thin wall section which is less than half as thick as the thickness of the resilient ribs 61' and 61" respectively.
- the support ribs 64 are suitably also thicker than the thin wall sections.
- the male resilient coupling device 5" is provided with a first flexible locking rib 51' and a second flexible locking rib 51" arranged to match the position of the first and second resilient ribs 61' and 61" respectively of the female resilient coupling device 5 1 .
- the first and second flexible locking ribs 51' and 51" respectively are further connected to each other via a spring section 54.
- the centre of the spring section 54 is connected to the surface on which the first and second flexible locking ribs 51' and 51" respectively are arranged
- the invention is not limited to the embodiment shown, since it can be varied in different ways within the scoop of the invention.
