Abstract

For multilevel recording on a recording layer of an optical record medium, an optimum recording power of a laser beam for each level of the multilevel recording is set in a short time. Stable signal characteristics are obtained with a transfer rate and a record density kept compatible rationally. A series of predetermined-length virtual record cells (40) are assumed in the recording layer (12) of an optical record medium (10) wherein information is recorded by irradiation with a laser beam. The optimum record power X (mW) of the laser beam and the record linear velocity A (m/sec) when the recording intensity of the laser beam is varied in five or more levels satisfy the expression 5 &ast; √ A < X < 10 &ast; √ A. Thus, the reflected light quantity from a virtual record cell with a record mark made by laser beam irradiation is so set as to be modulated in five or more levels.
