- the invention relates to a control handle for a transmission system, comprising a grip and a fastening part for fastening the grip onto the transmission system.
- Control handles of this kind are known in many different embodiments, although the differences between them generally only relate to the appearance of the grip.
- the control handle according to the present invention on the other hand solves a problem. It is known that in particular during a rather long, speedy ride with a motor vehicle the grip of the control handle heats up and may even become hot, because a certain percentage of the energy, generated by the motor is converted into heat in the transmission system and part of this heat finds its way to the grip. Most motorists experience this as unpleasant. A well-known and obvious improvement can be obtained by manufacturing the grip from an insulating material. In this way, the problem is in fact not solved but only the heat emission to the hand of the motorist is reduced.
- control handle according to the invention the problem is solved by manufacturing the grip in such a way that it has a very small heat capacity, so that it can hardly supply heat to the hand and by moreover cooling the grip.
- the control handle according to the invention is thereto characterised in that the grip is made of metal plate, that the grip encloses a central cavity and that in the grip a number of openings have been made via which the central cavity is connected to the surroundings of the grip.

- a favourable embodiment that may further reduce the production costs is characterised in that at least some of the openings are made on the edges of the parts, as a result of which the length of the welded joint can be reduced significantly.
- a metal bush is included in the grip, with the grip and the metal bush being connected preferably by a welded joint.
- an internal diameter is chosen which is wide enough to accommodate a fastening part which in turn can be made to fit to substantially every type of transmission system.
- a further favourable embodiment of the inventive control handle is characterised in that the fastening part comprises a bush-shaped part, which can be shifted at least partly round a rod-shaped connecting piece of the transmission system and can be attached to it and that an outside of the bush-shaped part and an inside of the metal bush make up a sliding fit.
- the shape of the fastening part will generally depend upon the type of the transmission system or in fact upon the type of the motor vehicle.
- a favourable embodiment according to a further aspect of the invention is characterised in that in the outside of the bush-shaped part at least two grooves have been made, which each may contain an 0-ring and that in the inside of the metal bush at least one groove has been made, in such a manner that at least one groove in the bush-shaped part and one groove in the metal bush operationally together contain an 0-ring.
- the grip can be installed in a simple manner, by exerting some pressure. Thanks to the friction caused by the 0-rings, it will not start to rotate spontaneously but if desired, the user may rotate it.
- a further important advantage of this mounting method is that the O-rings make a good heat insulation, which makes it more difficult for the heat generated in the transmission to leak to the grip.
- the invention also relates to a method for the manufacturing of a grip for a control handle for a transmission system.
- the inventive method is characterised in that from a metal plate two parts are cut out, in the process of which also a number of openings are made in the parts, that the parts are separately pressed into a desired shape and next connected together by a welded joint.
- a favourable embodiment of the inventive method is characterised in that a number of openings is made at the edges of the parts, in such a way that the length of the welded joint can be reduced.

- Fig. 1 represents in cross section a first possible embodiment of the control handle according to the invention, comprising a grip 1 with which a user may control a gearbox of a vehicle.
- Grip 1 is manufactured of thin sheet material, for example 1 millimetre aluminium or 0,5 millimetre stainless steel, and consists of two parts 2a, 2b which are cut out separately of the sheet material, for example by a laser, and which are then pressed into the desired shape. While cutting, in each side of the parts 2a, 2b recesses are made which, once put together, form the holes 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d and on the other side corresponding holes 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d which are not visible in the figure.
- the parts 2a, 2b are put together with a welded joint 5 which is very short, thanks to the holes 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d and 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and which can therefore be realised with little costs.
- the lower edge of grip 1 is next welded to an universal metal bush 6 and with the aid of a bush-shaped part 7 mounted onto an usually rod-shaped part 8 which is part of the gearbox of the vehicle.
- Rod-shaped part 8 is not the same for all vehicles, which means that bush-shaped part 7 must be available in different versions.
- rod-shaped part 8 is threaded and bush-shaped part 7 is mounted to rod-shaped part 8 with the aid of a nut 9.
- O-rings 10a, 10b which are placed in two grooves 11a, lib in bush-shaped part 7, after which grip 1 can be placed while exerting some force. While doing so, 0-ring 10a slips into a groove 12 in metal bush 6 so that grip 1 will be mounted firmly, but at the same time detachably and moreover it may be rotated into a desired position.
- O-rings reduce the transfer of heat and vibrations from the gearbox to grip 1.
- Fig. 2 represents in cross section a second possible embodiment of the control handle according to the invention, comprising a grip 13 with which a user may control an automatic gearbox of a vehicle.
- Grip 13 is manufactured of thin sheet material, for example 1 millimetre aluminium or 0,5 millimetre stainless steel, and consists of two parts 14a, 14b, of which in this cross section only part 14b is visible. Parts 14a, 14b are cut out separately of the sheet material, for example by a laser, which parts are then pressed into the desired shape. In each side of the parts 2a, 2b recesses are made which, once put together, form the holes 15a,.., 15n.
- the parts 14a, 14b are put together with a welded joint 16 which is very short, thanks to the holes 15a,..15n and which can therefore be realised with little costs.
- the lower edge of grip 13 is next welded to an universal metal bush 17 and with the aid of a bush-shaped part 18 mounted onto an usually rod-shaped part 19 which is part of the gearbox of the vehicle.

- O-rings 21a, 21b For mounting metal bush 17 onto bush-shaped part 18, use is made of two O-rings 21a, 21b which are placed in two grooves 22a, 22b in bush-shaped part 18, after which grip 13 is placed while exerting some force. While doing so, O-rings 21a, 21b slip into two grooves 23a, 23b in metal bush 17 so that grip 13 will be mounted firmly, but at the same time detachably and moreover it may be rotated into a desired position.
