- This invention relates to the use of multilayer film material to produce wrappers, especially of food products.
- some food products such as sweets, for example, are packaged in a wrapper constituted by a film of plastic material, usually transparent or semi-transparent, which is closed by imparting a twist to the film.
- the purpose of the invention is to produce packaging for products, especially food products, by using a film wrapper capable of properly retaining the twist which is imparted to it to close the packaging.
- Another purpose of the invention is to produce a multilayer film wrapper capable of being printed on or metallized on at least one of its outer surfaces without compromising the mechanical characteristics mentioned above.
- numeral 10 indicates a multilayer film material in which five layers can be distinguished: a central or inner core layer 11, two opposite intermediate layers 12 and 13, and two outer layers 14, 15.
- the inner layer 11 is essentially polyethylene-based or polypropylene-based, while the two intermediate layers 12, 13 are essentially polystyrene-based and the outer covering layers 14, 15 are essentially MLDPE polyethylene-based.
- the inner layer 11 and the outer layers 14, 15, polyethylene- based can be produced as a composition comprising low- density polyethylene with high-density polyethylene, and preferably comprise metallocene polyethylene, for example the metallocene polyethylene available under the trade names Exxon ML 1018 or 18Pfax Basel.
- the metallocene polyethylene is present at a concentration of about 90% by weight relative to the total weight of the inner layer.
- the metallocene polyethylene (MLDPE) is present at a concentration of about 90% by weight.
- the intermediate layers 12 , 13 are instead preferably produced as a composition comprising basic polystyrene mixed with modified polystyrene such as for example the copolymer of styrene-butadiene marketed by Phillips Chemical Company under the trade name K-Resin®.

- the central core layer 11 besides performing the function of a bonding agent for the two intermediate layers 12 , 13 , utilizes the elastic properties of polyethylene or polypropylene to give the multilayer film as a whole good properties of flexibility and of resistance to local deformation, in particular when caused by twisting, without allowing the formation of cracks or discontinuities which might allow the ingress to the inside of a package of external contaminating agents such as water, dust, dirt etc.
- the intermediate layers 12, 13, intimately bonded by means of the central layer 11, are instead more inclined, compared with the latter, to undergo permanent plastic deformation, in particular when twisting is imparted to the multilayer material .
- the outer covering layers 14, 15 are those which receive the printing inks which are applied to the multilayer film material to obtain images and/or lettering as required for the intended end use.
- the multilayer film material of the invention can therefore advantageously be printed on even with any ink normally used for printing on polypropylene, and does not necessarily require the use of water-based inks (which do not attack polystyrene) .
- only one outer covering layer 14 is provided, suitable for printing on and having the characteristics mentioned above with reference to the examples of embodiment already described.
- the single outer covering layer 14 or the two outer covering layers 14, 15 may be produced from PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol modified, or amorphous terephtalic acid polyester) joined to the intermediate layer 12, 13 by means of an adhesive 16.
- the invention can, in particular, be used for wrapping food products in general and/or products of other kinds which it is wished to package by means of a film wrapper which is closed by maintaining the twist which is imparted to it.
- the mechanical characteristic of the multilayer film depends upon its thickness; however, even using films with a total thickness of about 20 microns, excellent toughness properties were obtained.
- the total thickness of the film should generally be between about 20 and about 50 microns.
- the percentages of thickness of the various layers constituting the film are divided uniformly.
- the intermediate layers, essentially polystyrene-based each to have a thickness of between about 20% and 40% of the total thickness of the film, while the central layer, polyethylene-based, should have a thickness of between 20% and 60% of the total thickness.
- polystyrene-based intermediate layers 12, 13 there are interposed two respective layers 17, 18 which are based on PETG or PET with an addition of modified polystyrene, preferably SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) .
