Definitions
- the present invention relates to an optical disk, and more particularly, to an optical disk having an enlarged printing surface area.
- Optical disks are generally data storage media used to reproduce digital data recorded on an optical recording surface using a compact disk player, CD ROM drive, digital video drive, or the like.
- An optical disk is circular and has an optical recording surface on which digital data can be optically recorded and a displaying surface that displays the contents of the optically recorded digital data.
- a recording operation on the recording surface is achieved by forming a pit using a laser. Data recorded by forming the pit is reproduced using the laser.
- a user can directly write optical recording contents, memos, or the like on the displaying surface, not on the recording surface, using a writing tool.
- the user can also print letters, figures, pictures, or the like on the displaying surface using a printer. For example, the user can put various types of information to be displayed on a displaying surface of an optical disk using an inkjet printer that is developed only for an optical disk.
- Korean Patent Publication No. 99-29618 discloses a recording medium having an ink receiving layer containing a hydrophilic resin and a cationic compound.
- International Patent Publication No. WO 99/16835 describes an ink container having (meth)acryl monomer, a radial thermosetting compound containing (meth)acryl monomer, and an absorbent inorganic or organic filler. Such an ink receiving layer coats a displaying surface of an optical disk when manufacturing the optical disk, and thus helps a printing operation to be smoothly performed.
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a general optical disk.
- a displaying surface 2 is formed on one side of an optical disk 1.
- a through hole 3, which penetrates through the displaying surface 2, is formed in the center of the optical disk 1.
- a groove 4 is concentrically formed with the through hole 3.
- the groove 4 is loop-shaped and serves as a border at which the optical disk 1 is surface-treated prior to printing.
- a radius a of the through hole 3 is generally 7.5 mm
- a radius b from the center of the optical disk 1 to the groove 4 is 17 mm
- a total radius c of the optical disk 1 is 60 mm.
- a portion of the displaying surface 2 in which printing can be substantially performed is limited to a radius within the range of 28 - 58.5 mm from the center of the optical disk 1.
- the optical disk 1 having the displaying surface 2 shown in FIG. 1 has the following problems.
- the printing surface of the displaying surface 2 is limited.
- the printing area of the displaying surface 2 is limited.
- the groove 4 is an obstacle to printing. If printing is performed in the entire area of displaying surface 2 without considering the existence of the groove 4, poor printing may be carried out at a portion of the groove 4.
- two silk screen masks corresponding to outside and inside portions of the radial direction of the groove 4 are required.
- the present invention provides an improved optical disk.
- the present invention also provides an optical disk having a displaying surface with the maximum area on which printing can be performed.
- an optical disk including an optical recording surface, a displaying surface, a through hole, and an ink receiving layer.
- the optical recording surface is formed on one side of the optical disk.
- the displaying surface is formed on the other side of the optical disk, which is the rear surface of the optical recording surface, and is totally flat.
- the through hole penetrates through the optical recording surface and the displaying surface.
- the ink receiving layer coats the displaying surface so as to improve an adhesive strength between the displaying surface and ink.
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an optical disk according to the prior art
- FIG. 2 is a schematic perspective view of an optical disk according to the present invention.
- FIG. 2 is a schematic perspective view of an optical disk according to an embodiment of the present invention.
- an optical disk 11 has a displaying surface 12 on one side thereof.
- a through hole 13 is formed in the center of the optical disk 1 1.
- ink jet printing can be performed in the entire area of displaying surface 12 of the optical disk 11.
- the formation of the groove 4 is excluded and the entire area of displaying surface 12 is made flat.
- inkjet printing can be carried out in the entire area of the displaying surface 12 except the through hole 13.
- it is preferable that printing is performed from a radial position at a distance of 11.4 mm from the center of the optical disk 11 to a radial position at a distance of 58.5 mm from the center of the optical disk 11.
- the displaying surface 12 of the optical disk 11 is coated with an ink receiving layer (not shown).
- the ink receiving layer coats the entire area of displaying surface 12 when manufacturing the optical disk 11 so that inkjet printing is smoothly performed.
- the ink receiving layer may be the same as the above-described ink receiving layer.
- the ink receiving layer may be an ultraviolet thermosetting composition containing 100 weight parts of methacryl monomer, from about 150 to about 250 weight parts of methacrylate oligomer, and from about 10 to about 100 weight parts of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone.
- the ultraviolet thermosetting composition is hardened by coating the displaying surface 12 with the ultraviolet thermosetting composition and radiating ultraviolet rays onto the ultraviolet thermosetting composition.
- the adhesive strength between the ink receiving layer and the displaying surface 12 of the optical disk 11 is good, and the absorptivity of, the adsorption onto, the dryness of, and the water-resistance against aqueous ink are very good.
- a high-quality recording medium can be provided.
- Such an ultraviolet thermosetting composition is disclosed in Korean Patent Application No. 2001-44204.
- a displaying surface of an optical disk is totally flat, and thus the printing area thereof can be enlarged.
- the available area on which information or images of the contents recorded on the optical disk can be printed can be expanded.
- printing can be performed in the entire area of the displaying surface.
- printing costs and printing processes can be reduced.
- an ink receiving layer having a good ultraviolet thermosetting composition can be formed on the displaying surface, the adhesiveness of the displaying surface to ink is good.
