- the present application relates to apparatus for expelling fluid, and in particular to a fire extinguisher in which the outer casing is resistant to damage.
- a common form of a fire extinguisher (such as that disclosed in US 5,992,531 in the name of Mikulec) comprises a housing for containing extinguishing fluid, an outlet for the fluid and a plunger to act in a piston-like manner within the housing to expel fluid through the outlet.
- This type of extinguisher has the following design faults:
- the walls may be dented which can stop the plunge operating smoothly to expel fluid from the extinguisher.
- Design faults also apply to extinguishers which do not include a plunger, but rather expel the contents by means of a change in pressure. For example, if the extinguisher is dropped or struck with a sharp object, then the housing walls may be breached, causing a loss of pressure or causing extinguishing fluid to leak from the housing.
- apparatus for expelling fluid comprising a housing, a container within the housing for containing fluid, an outlet for the fluid and means for expelling the fluid through the outlet, wherein the container is collapsible, such that, in use, said means for expelling fluid causes the container to collapse to expel fluid from the apparatus.
- the fluid is a fire extinguishing agent
- the apparatus serves to expel the agent in the direction of the fire.
- the apparatus of the invention may have alternative uses, for example to water plants.
- the advantage of the inventive extinguishing apparatus is that the plunger does not need to seal against the inner walls of the housing, because the agent is contained within the collapsible container and cannot therefore pass between the edge of the plunger and the inner housing wall. Accordingly, indentations to the housing walls caused for example by a blow to the outside of the apparatus, do not prevent the plunger from actuating, since a gap between the inner wall and the plunger can be provided.
- the container may be formed from a puncture-resistant material such as an extruded polymer (preferably polyethylene).
- the container may be encased in a puncture- resistant sheath.
- a further advantage of the inventive extinguishing apparatus is that refills of extinguishing agent can be provided in replacement collapsible containers.
- the collapsible container can be of any shape, provided that it fits into the apparatus. In particular, it does not have to be concentric with the walls of the housing, nor do the walls of the container have to be parallel.
- the extinguishing apparatus may be a portable fire extinguisher, a ceiling mounted sprinkler system, or any apparatus which requires expulsion of extinguishing agent. It may comprise a heat sensor, which senses the ambient temperature and actuates the apparatus when the ambient temperature exceeds a predetermined figure.
- the means for expelling extinguishing agent through the outlet onto the fire comprises an internal plunger which operates to move from a primed to an unprimed position to collapse the container, thereby expelling the agent from the fire extinguisher.
- Resilient biasing means (such as a spring) are preferably provided to drive the plunger and thereby collapse the container.
- the container is interposed between the plunger and the outlet, the plunger moving towards the outlet to collapse the container and expel the fluid through the outlet.
- the plunger is interposed between the outlet and the container, the plunger moving away from the outlet to urge the container against an internal wall and thereby collapse the container, wherein a conduit is provided to provide fluid communication between the container and the outlet, the fluid being expelled from the container along the conduit and through the outlet on actuation of the plunger.
- the plunger may be constrained in the primed position by means of a ratchet and pawl mechanism.
- a ratchet and pawl mechanism This may be in the form of a flexible or rigid rod having notches or catches therein for engaging the teeth of a pawl mechanism, and the other end of the rod being attached to the plunger.
- a cord may be provided with one end attached to the plunger and the other wound around a wheel or pulley, with the ratchet mechanism being part of or provided on the wheel or pulley.
- the pawl mechanism may be connected to a lever or other actuating means which can be actuated by the user to release the pawl from the ratchet.
- the resilient biasing means then serves to drive the plunger from the primed to the unprimed position, thereby expelling the fluid from the apparatus.
- the plunger is constrained in the primed position by means of friction between a brake and the rigid rod described above.
- the brake is provided by a latch having an aperture therein through which the rod passes, wherein the latch is adapted to move between a first position in which the latch is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the rod, such that the rod can pass through the aperture freely, and a second position in which the latch is at an angle with respect to said perpendicular, such that friction is created between the inside walls of said aperture and the rod, to restrain movement of the rod.
- the latch is connected to a lever or other actuating means which, when actuated, move the latch from the second to the first position in order to release the rod and thereby allow the plunger to move to the unprimed postion.
- resilient biasing means is provided to bias the latch into the second position.
- the apparatus may comprise more than one collapsible container. Larger models preferable contain from 1 to 4 containers.
- the apparatus comprises means for replacing the spent container with a fresh container, and means for priming the apparatus.
- the means for replacing the spent container may be conventional in nature, for example it may be similar to the system for replacing full dust bags in a vacuum cleaner.

- FIG. 2 is a schematic representation of an alternative latching mechanism in accordance with the invention.
- Figure 3 is a schematic representation in partial cross section of an alternative embodiment of an extinguisher in accordance with the invention.
- the extinguisher comprises housing 1 which is formed of a moulded plastics material.
- Housing 1 has internal chamber 2 having outlet 8, and pressure plate 3 which is biased by spring 4 to move in a piston-like manner though chamber 2 towards outlet 8.
- Flexible rod 5, which is attached to pressure plate 3, has a number of catches 6 disposed along its length.
- spring 4 is compressed by moving pressure plate 3 into a position in which it is at the opposite end of chamber 2 to outlet 8, so as to maximise the available volume in chamber 2.
- This action moves catches 6 past sprung lever 7, which is biased into a position in which the lever abuts catches 6 and prevents rod 5, and hence pressure plate 3, from being urged by spring 4 towards outlet 8.
- Collapsible bag 9 is fitted into chamber 2 in fluid communication with outlet 8, and filled with an extinguishing agent.
- lever 7 is depressed so as to release catches 6.
- Pressure plate 3 is thereby urged by spring 4 towards outlet 8, compressing bag 9 and expelling its contents through outlet 8 to extinguish the fire.
- pressure plate 3 be in direct contact with bag 9.
- a push plate may be interposed between pressure plate 3 and bag 9. Bag 9 may be larger than pressure plate 3.
- the rod may be rigid and smooth, i.e. without catches 6.
- a latching mechanism for such apparatus is depicted in Figure 2:
- Spring 4 acts against pressure plate 3 as in the apparatus of Figure 1.
- rigid rod 22 extends from pressure plate 3 and passes through an aperture (not shown) in latch 21.
- latch 21 is at an angle to the perpendicular (as shown in Figure 2), the friction between the internal walls of the aperture and the surface of rod 22 acts to restrain movement of rod 22.
- the user simply has to depress lever 20 in order to tilt latch 21 to a position in which it is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of rod 22, whereby friction between the aperture walls and the surface of rod 22 is reduced, and rod 22 can move freely under the action of spring 4 to urge plate 3 into bag 9 as described in relation to Figure 1.
- FIG. 3 shows certain parts of apparatus in accordance with the invention as employed in a larger fire extinguisher.
- valve 30 is provided at the outlet of the apparatus, and this is opened by actuating lever 31 in order to allow fluid to pass through valve 30.
- Lever 31 is provided in addition to the lever (not shown) for tilting latch 21, and provides an additional means to allow and control the expulsion of fluid from the apparatus.
- the pressure plate 3 and spring 4 act to collapse bag 9 in a direction away from the outlet of the apparatus of Figure 3.
