Abstract

A collision warning system (32) for a vehicle (30) comprises an ultrasound transducer (34) and a processing system (58). The processing system (58) is electrically coupled to the ultrasound transducer (34) for receiving ultrasound signals from it. The processing system (58) comprising a computer program. The computer program is adapted to be executed by the processing system (58), and when executed by the processing system (58), the computer program is adapted to provide instructions to: filter out unwanted portions of the ultrasound signal corresponding to sound waves not originating from a certain transducer on the vehicle (30), to produce a filtered ultrasound signal; determine a distance and relative velocity between the vehicle (30) and one or more objects being within the distance range from the vehicle based on the filtered ultrasound signal; determine a current level of severity for a external condition within the distance range based on the relative velocity and the distance; and control the output of a warning system (38) or control a safety device (214) based on the current level of severity.
