Definitions
- the invention relates to a milking arrangement for milking cows.
- the invention relates to a milking arrangement of the type which includes a cleaning system.
- FIG. 1A shows a fluid diagram of the invention.
- FIG. 1A the connections indicated by W, X, Y and Z connect with the corresponding connections of the same respective letter indicated in Fig. IB.
- the apparatus comprises one or more milking unit which each comprise a set of teat cups 1 for attachment to the teats of a cow.
- the outlets of the teat cups are connected to a respecive control valve 2a - 2d and a respective meter 3a - 3d for metering milk.
- the outlets oi the milk meters are connected to an inlet of an end unit 4.
- the valves 2a - 2d may be closed to stop liquid flow if desired.
- milk passes from the teat cups via the valves 2a - 2d, through milk meters 3a - 3d to the end unit 4.
- the end unit 4 is formed by a closed receptacle which collects the milk from a set of teat cups.
- the end unit 4 is held under vacuum by a vacuum source 5.
- a milk pump 6 is connected to an outlet of the end unit 4.
- the milk pump 6 removes milk from the end unit 4.
- the output of the milk pump is connected to a non-return valve 7 which only allows flow out of the milk pump and not in the reverse direction.
- the outlet of the non-return valve 7 is connected via two lines to respective control valves 8 and 9.
- a first line is controlled by the control valve 8.
- the valve 8 may be opened or closed.
- a second line is controlled by the control valve 9.
- the control valve 9 may be opened or closed. The function of the control valve 9 will be described later.
- After leaving the valve 8 the milk passes via a filter 10 to a main tank 11.
- the main tank 11 may be connected to one or a plurality of milking units via one or more end units.
- valve 13 When it is desired not to use the main tank, e.g. when the main tank is being cleaned, valve 13 is closed and the control valves 14 and 15 are opened so that the milk passes to a buffer tank 12.
- the control valve 16 When milk is passing to the buffer tank 12 the control valve 16 is closed.
- the buffer tank is normally of smaller capacity thai, the main tank 11 and serves to store milk when the main tank is not being used.
- the control valve 14 may be closed and the control valve 13 reopened to allow filling of the main tank to recommence.
- a further buffer tank (not shown) is provided to which the milk of that cow is diverted.
- Liquid spraying nozzles are provided for cleaning the inside of the teat cups 1.
- at least one nozzle is arranged to be moveable from a position outside the teat cup to a position inside the teat cup.
- the nozzles are arranged on respective teat cleaning devices 23a - 23d.
- the teat cleaning devices 23a - 23d may respectively be provided with means for sealing the teat cups when the teat cleaning devices are in a respective teat cup so that a vacuum applied to the teat cup can be effective to draw liquid out of the nozzles.
- the nozzle or nozzles can spray liquid to cleanse the inside of the teat cup.
- Cleaning liquid is provided by a source of cleaning liquid 24.
- the cleaning liquid passes via a line 25 to a common first manifold 21.
- the cleaning nozzles are supplied with cleaning liquid via said first manifold 21.
- the control valve 8 is closed and the control valve 9 is opened.
- Cleaning liquid is drawn from the cleaning liquid source to the first manifold 21 under the force of the vacuum existing in the end unit 4.
- the liquid is distributed by the first manifold to the cleaning nozzles in the cleaning devices 23a - 23d.
- From the teat cups the cleaning liquid passes through the valves 2a - 2d, through the milk meters 3a - 3d and into the end unit 4.
- the cleaning fluid is pumped by the milk pump 6 from the end unit. Because the control valve 9 is open and the control valve 8 is closed the cleaning liquid passes only through the valve 9. From the valve 9 the cleaning liquid passes back via a connecting line to the source of cleaning liquid 24 where the used cleaning liquid is disposed of.
- the control valve 17 When it is desired to clean the interior walls of the end unit 4 the control valve 17 is opened to allow fluid to pass to the liquid spraying unit 22 in the end unit.
- the liquid spraying unit is arranged to be able to spray the walls of the end unit.
- the liquid spraying unit may be provided on a top wall of the end unit. Alternatively, the liquid spraying unit may be suspended inside the end unit. In each case spraying nozzles are arranged on the unit in such a manner that the cleaning liquid reaches a majority or substantially all of the internal surfaces of the end unit.
- Vacuum line 25 includes an air inlet control valve 31 at a position close to the spraying devices 22 and 23a - 23d.
- the air inlet valve may allow air at a pressure above the pressure in the line 25, e.g. at atmospheric pressure, into the line 25.
- the line 25 is relatively long and has a relatively small diameter.
- the air inlet control valve 31 may be opened for short periods, for example between 0.5 and 4 seconds, preferably between 1 and 2 seconds, to allow a quantity of air at higher pressure into the line 25.
- the resultant temporary pressure increase in the line 25 causes a temporary increase in the liquid pressure at the spraying devices 22 or 23a - 23d.
- a vacuum of 0.4 atmospheres in the end unit 4 may typically produce a vacuum of only 0.2 atmospheres at the cleaning liquid source.
- higher pressure air e.g. at atmospheric pressure
- the connection of the air inlet to the line 25 is sufficiently near the spraying devices to produce an increase in pressure of at least 50%, preferably at least 100%.
- a second manifold 18 is provided.
- the second manifold is connected via a control valve 20 to a rinsing water supply.
- the second manifold is connected to nozzles in the teat cleaning devices 23a - 23d.
- Each teat cleaning device may either comprise one or more nozzles for the cleaning liquid and one or more nozzles for the rinsing water.
- the same nozzles may be used for both the cleaning and the rinsing; in this case each nozzle is connectable to each of the first and the second manifolds 21 and 18 respectively.
- the teat cups may be rinsed with water.
- the valve 20 is opened to supply rinsing water to the second manifold.
- the water After the water has rinsed the teat cups it passes via the valves 2a - 2d and the milk meters 3a - 3d to the end unit 4. From the end unit it passes through the milk pump 5.
- the valve 8 is arranged to be closed and the valve 9 is arranged to be open.
- a control valve 26 is arranged to be open so that the rinsing water can pass to the drain 27. Alternatively, the rinsing water passes back via a connecting line to the source of cleaning liquid 24 where the used rinsing water is disposed of.
- the exterior of the teat cups may also be rinsed.
- a source of water or suitable rinsing liquid 28 is connectable by a control valve 29 to a spraying device 30.
- the valve 29 is opened and the rinsing liquid is sprayed on to the cup exteriors.
- cleaning' is meant cleaning the arrangement with a liquid which includes a product which aids the cleaning, e.g. a detergent, but which should not normally come in contact with the milk.
- 'rinsing' is meant treating the arrangement with a liquid, preferably water, which may normally come in contact with the milk.
- the rinsing liquid may optionally include products which may normally come in contact with the milk.
- the control valves of the milking arrangement are controllable by a control unit (not shown).
- the control unit may be in the form of a programmable computer.
- the control unit controls cleaning and rinsing of the arrangement as set out in the following.
- Cleaning of the apparatus may be controlled to take place at regular intervals. After cleaning it is preferable for the cleaning liquid to be removed from the system, e.g. by rinsing. For instance the cleaning may take place at most every 18 hours, more preferably it may take place at most every 12 hours, most preferably it takes place every 4 to 12 hours, even more preferably it takes place at least every 6 to 9 hours.
- the cleaning process may comprise cleaning the teat cups and the end unit, or the cleaning process may comprise cleaning the walls of the end unit. Preferably the cleaning process comprises both cleaning the teat cups and the end unit, as well as cleaning the walls of the end unit.
- Cleaning of the apparatus also may also take place just after a cow has been milked whose milk should not come in contact with the milk of other cows, e.g. a diseased.
- the cleaning process may be instigated automatically by the control unit by appropriate programming. It is also possible for the control unit to carry out cleaning upon actuation by a user.
- Rinsing may be controlled to take place after each cow has been milked. After a cleaning of the milk unit a rinsing takes place in order to remove traces of the cleaning liquid. In addition, rinsing may take place whenever milking of a cow has not taken place for a predetermined time period. The predetermined period may be at most 60 minutes, preferably more than 20 minutes and less than 40 minutes. The rinsing process may be instigated automatically by the control unit by appropriate programming. It is also possible for the control unit to carry out rinsing upon actuation by a user.
