Definitions
- This invention relates wireless telephone communication systems. More particularly, this invention relates to a telephone device that detects the off-hook condition of a telephone extension and signals the extension unit to lower its loop current thereby permitting the placement of automatic telephone calls.
- Description of the Related Art A variety of wireless telephone extension systems are in use and/or have been proposed. However, typically these systems do not provide the capability of detecting another extension going off hook and providing the means for signaling the extension unit to reset the Customer Phone Equipment (CPE) in order to permit emergency use of the phone line.

- This invention is a method and system for "91 l"-call detection and enablement in a wireless telephone system, which has a base unit connected to the telephone line and an extension unit.
- the base unit and the extension unit are in wireless communication with each other.
- This invention determines if an extension unit telephone has been brought off-hook mid call. When such an event occurs the loop current in the base unit is detected and a signal is sent to the extension unit in use to lower its loop current, thereby freeing up the line for use by another extension in a "911" emergency call or the like.
- Figure 1 shows a top-level block diagram of the preferred embodiment of the system of this invention.
- a base unit 101 is provided having a standard telephone plug 102, typically and preferably an RJ-11 connector, for connection to a standard telephone line.
- the telephone plug 102 provides an electrical tip and ring connection 103a,b to a current sensing circuit 104.
- the current sensing circuit 104 is electrically connected to the wireless communication channel 106/107.
- This wireless communication channel can be an RF over-the-air channel or an AC power line channel or the equivalent.
- An extension unit 112 is in communication 107/106 with the base unit 101.
- the extension unit 112 has a loop current lowering circuit 109 in communication with a telephone plug 111, typically and preferably an RJ- 11 plug, which typically will be connected to the user's telephone communication equipment.
- this invention works based on the premise that a device which connects to a wireless telephone line and which makes automatic telephone calls uses the telephone line tip and ring voltage to determine when another customer telephone device seizes the line.
- This invention detects the loop current in the base unit 101, which then sends a signal to the extension unit 112 to lower its current through the tip and ring when it detects a drop in current.
- the base unit 101 detects the current using a voltage comparator or, alternatively an operational amplifier associated with a sense resistor. Discrete transistor components or analog to digital conversion techniques could also be employed.
- the extension unit 112 generates the detected current using its own power supply along with current conversion or switching techniques.
- this invention uses FSK modulation techniques for the modulation of the carrier from the base 101 to signal to the extension unit 112.
- a micro controller in the base unit 101 encodes a data message for this purpose and a micro controller in the extension unit 112 decodes the data message and performs the appropriate operation, in this case makes the various currents available in the extension unit 112.
- Figure 2 is a flow chart showing alternative preferred steps of the method, used in an extension pickup detect during off -hook condition, of this invention.
- the method starts 201.
- a loop current drop detection 202 step is performed.
- the extension unit is sent 203 the message to drop its loop current.
- the extension unit drops 204 its loop current and the process ends 205.
