Definitions
- the invention relates to an arrangement and em method for confirming a credit card payment transaction in a data or telecommunications network.
- Credit card fraud is usually only determined by the credit card holder when the monthly cost list is sent. If suspiciously high payment amounts are paid by credit card, the credit card institute sometimes calls the credit card holder via the fixed network to inform them of the card charge. This has the disadvantage that the credit card holder is not permanently available and the payment process cannot be interrupted by a counterfeit credit card or by an unauthorized user.
- the Internet is becoming increasingly important as a source of shopping.
- the credit card institutes but also more and more providers of goods and services connected to the internet.
- the cell phone networks are becoming more and more important in comparison to the fixed network due to their constantly increasing reliability, their convenience and the constantly falling charges.
- the connection of data and telecommunications networks is also progressing. Both the manufacturers of mobile radio end devices and the operators of mobile radio networks are increasingly interested in offering their customers the simplest possible access to data communication networks and in particular to the Internet.
- the mobile terminal communicates with the Internet in the programming language WML (Wireless Markup Language) via the special Internet protocol WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).
- WML Wireless Markup Language
- WAP Wireless Application Protocol
- the invention has for its object to provide a credit card payment system that ensures a high level of security both for the credit card holder and for the company receiving payment by credit card (eg restaurant) and for the credit card institute.
- the invention closes the essential idea e of quickly and easily informing the credit card holder about the use of his credit card in a credit card payment process via a mobile radio network. This idea opens up the possibility of an increase in credit card payment processes in both personal and professional transactions.
- the invention includes the
- the mobile terminal of the credit card holder is preferably a device which communicates with the Internet using the WML language as part of the WAP. It is also possible to create a mobile terminal device that is capable of processing the HTML format in order to provide direct access to the Internet without the previously required conversion of HTML files into the WML format or vice versa. This mobile terminal can also have a key assignment for confirming or not confirming a credit card payment process. However, the simplest and currently the most widely visible variant works on an SMS basis with practically any mobile phone.
- the payment data processing unit of the credit card institute contains a subscriber information database which has a large number of storage areas for storing subscriber account data and identification and authentication information about the subscriber.
- the database preferably also has a memory which contains the account and mobile numbers of each subscriber. Thus, only the information relevant to the payment information message, namely the mobile number of the subscriber, can be determined in a simple manner from all the stored information about the subscriber.
- a mobile radio network e which is known as a gateway server, is preferably used for the message transmission from the Internet m.
- the message format can, for example, be converted from the HTML format to the WML format.
- the payment information message can also be translated into a different language by the gateway server if the credit card holder - for example on the basis of the number of his terminal - is recognized as a foreigner and his (presumed) native language can be assigned.
- SMS Short Message Service
- this type of message transmission also has usage advantages.
- the reception and sending of SMS messages can be realized without an acoustic load, and on the other hand, the short messages can appear repeatedly on the display of a mobile terminal and can be easily saved.
- the payment information message can, however, also take the form of a voice message which is directed to the credit card holder by a voice computer of the credit card institute via a mobile radio terminal.
- this request message can be translated into his mother tongue by the speech computer.

- a mobile radio terminal 1 has a radio connection to a base station BS1, which spans a radio area of a cell of the mobile radio network MN.
- a mobile switching center MSC forms a switching node of the mobile radio network to which the base station BS1 is assigned and which in turn is connected to a gateway switching center 7 for establishing a link to an IP network IP m.
- the structure of the IP network is not shown here with the exception of the gateway switching center (gateway server) 7 already mentioned.
- a data reading unit 5 and a data receiver unit 5a of a goods or service provider is connected to a payment data processing unit 3 of a credit card institute via the IP network.
- the payment data processing unit 3 comprises a control unit 3a and a memory 3b, which contains the credit card numbers and mobile phone numbers of the credit card holders in a tabular assignment to one another.
- the card data stored on the credit card are read by the data reading unit 5 of the goods or service provider, and a payment request message is sent to transfer part of the electronic credit of the credit card holder to the control unit 3a of the payment data processing unit 3 issued by the credit card institution.
- the control unit 3a uses the credit card number to address the memory 3b em which contains the mobile phone number of the credit card holder concerned.
- a payment information message in the form of a text message (SMS message) is issued to the credit card holder by the control unit 3a.
- SMS message text message
- the format of this message is converted before transmission from the IP network m to the mobile radio network MN by the gateway server 7 and forwarded to the mobile switching center MSC of the mobile radio network MN.
- the text message is received by the receiver stage 9a of the mobile radio terminal 1 via the base station BS1 and shown on its display 16.
- the number of the credit card institution is saved in a memory.
- an instruction is given to the participant by pressing the buttons, by means of which the payment process can be confirmed or not confirmed.
- the confirmation or non-confirmation message is linked to the stored number of the credit card institute by a controller and sent to the credit card institute by the transmission stage 1d of the mobile radio terminal 1 via the mobile radio network MN.
- the credit card holder can give a confirmation or non-confirmation of the credit card payment process by pressing a key lc on the conventional mobile radio terminal keyboard, or else by pressing a separate key that is used only for this confirmation or non-confirmation process , This requires a mobile device with a suitable key assignment. If the credit card holder confirms or does not confirm the payment process, the text message is forwarded as a WML message via the mobile switching center MSC to the gateway server 7 and the HTML format is converted. The confirmation or non-confirmation message is sent by the control unit 3a of the payment data processing unit. unit 3 received. The control unit 3a issues a confirmation message to the data receiver unit 5a of the provider that the particular part of the electronic credit card holder's debit has been debited.
- FIG. 2 shows a further embodiment of the arrangement according to the invention and the corresponding method for confirming a credit card payment transaction.
- the payment process is confirmed or not confirmed via an MN mobile radio network.
- the difference between this exemplary embodiment and the first is that the payment data processing unit 3 of the credit card institute and the data reading unit 5 or data receiver unit 5a of the goods or service provider are connected to one another via a fixed telephone network (ISDN).
- ISDN fixed telephone network
- the control unit 3a of the payment data processing unit 3 outputs an information message m in the form of a text message to a speech computer 9.
- the voice message is then transmitted via a connection unit 7 (mobile radio unit ME) of the credit card institute via a first base station BS1 and via a mobile switching center MSC to a second base station BS2 and to the mobile radio terminal 1 of the credit card holder.
- the payment data processing unit 3 also contains a provider recognition unit 11, by means of which the name of the goods or service provider is recognized and transmitted to the credit card holder with the information message.
- the credit card holder can confirm or not confirm the payment process and thus the debiting of the specific part of his electronic credit can take place or be canceled.
- an additional memory can be used in the payment Data processing unit 3 can be set up, to which the payment process is saved and the debit can only take place after 24 hours, for example.
