Definitions

  • This invention is directed to a device and method for temporarily covering and creating a water-tight seal for a window opening in which the window glass has been broken and damaged, or completely removed, thus forming a protective barrier to the elements, such as rain, snow, dust, pollution, heat and cold
  • the invention is particularly applicable to vehicle windows, however the invention can be applied to other types of windows, such as those in homes and offices
  • the device is convenient and simple to install and remove, and requires no special tools and expertise.

  • the present invention utilizes a single transparent sheet 10 of polyethylene, vinyl, or polymeric film which is seen being applied to the widow frame 12,as seen in Fig. 4.
  • strips of material 14 that are coated on opposite sides with adhesive are inserted on the window frame, and which each have peelable liners 16 which may be selected from a group of materials of polyester, polyethylene, vinyl, rubber, foam or glass cloth

  • the double -sided adhesive strips 14 are applied to the frame 12of the window opening 15 on the bottom, top, and opposite sides of the window opening so as provide elongated adhesive strips about the entire periphery of the window opening.
  • the transparent sheet 10 is precut to the approximate dimensions of the window opening, and at the same time allows for sufficient material to overlap the edges of the window opening so that the excess material 10A can be trimmed whereby the transparent sheet 10 , as shown in Fig. 6, completely covers the window opening 15 and is securely affixed to the window frame 12 at all four sides of the window frame.
  • the temporary window of flexible transparent film 10 is approximately 2 to 8 mils thick
  • the double-sided elongated adhesive tape strips have a width of about Vz to 3 inches It should be noted that the adhesive tape is cut, prior to installation, to a size that matches the perimeter outline of the window frame
  • the double-sided adhesive tapes 1 are applied to the periphery of the window opening with the back of the adhesive down and sticking to the window frame .
  • the remaining adhesive sides of the tapes 14 are then facing upwards after the release liners 16 are removed.
  • the upward facing adhesive thus permits the marginal edges of the flexible transparent film 10 to be stuck and firmly sealed to the adhesive strips 14
  • an additional step in the method of providing a temporary replacement window is shown in which additional single sided adhesive tapes 18 are applied to the top of the edges of the transparent sheet of film. Consequently, a temporary window replacement for a wide variety of window opening configurations is achieved that also has the necessary optical clarity for automotive purposes.
