Definitions
- This invention concerns a transport bed for especially gentle transport of people who are in a prone position in a transport vehicle, which is not necessarily an emergency vehicle; and for outdoor or indoor transport between the person' s starting destination, which could be a healthcare institution, and the vehicle; and also from the vehicle to for example some other form of healthcare institution.
- the background for the invention is the difficult situation which people, either as patients or as people who have been discharged after treatment, who have special physical problems, experience during transport in a prone position: especially on long journies in a regular ambulance.
- a problem which frequently occurs in addition to the difficult physical situation is that the person being transported is prevented from seeing the road while the vehicle is moving, which often results in travel sickness occurring. This risk increases proportionately with the length of the distance travelled. Patients who have hurt their backs, for example, or damaged their spinal cords, are usually transported on standard stretchers in ambulances which have been designed for responding to emergency calls .
- a regular stretcher is stiff, has relatively no cushioning, is small and is constructed in such a way that it can be folded into a chair so that it may be carried down stairs.
- the mattress in such a stretcher is divided up into short sections in conjunction with the folding points of the frame. One can feel the section divisions and edges when one is lying on such a mattress.
- the narrow breadth is used deliberately in order to ensure that one can get through any door opening. Due to this narrow breadth, people with a normal build would have difficulty lying on their back on the stretcher, with their arms by their sides. Normal practice is therefore to strap the patients in with their arms across their chests.
- the low height of the stretcher is designed specifically for stability during transportation and also because of the fact that there isn't room for anything more than the patient, the people treating the patient and any life-saving equipment such as a defibrilator, intubation equipment, oxygen apparatus, intravenous drips, tubes etc.
- U.S patent 1 859 480 describes a stretcher with a special fastening device for assembly of the stretcher against a wall in the ambulance.
- the feature which that stretcher has in common with this invention is that they both have vecal- axis pivotable wheels in forks. Otherwise the wheels look compact.
- U.S. patent 2 303 618 illustrates similar pivotable wheel forks, together with a fixed, non-adjustable side bridle, as opposed to the embodiment of the invention's removable and/or height adjustable, possibly upholstered side bridle.
- U.S. patent 2 249 351 is a special type of stretcher combined with a form of personal transport vehicle, where the stretcher is very low and designed to be loaded into the vehicle through the boot of a regular car and is pushed in where the back of the back seat is usually assembled, all the way into the front seat beside the driver, where the back of the passenger seat is pushed all the way back into a horizontal position. Otherwise there are no common features between that design and the embodiment of the invention, apart from the fact that it has wheels and one can lie on it.
- U.S. patent 3 005 656 describes a device for securing a stretcher in a vehicle. It has a "heart support tray” which is shown in an upright position and it is uncertain as to whether or not it was meant to be adjustable. It also describes side bridles which are fixed and non-adjustable w L t to H P 1 .
- Fig. 1 is a lateral or elevational view of the transport bed with an extension piece, a bridle with a support grip to help the transported person to move, and with the so-called “heart support tray” raised to approximately a 30 degree angle .
- Fig. 2 is an end view of the transport bed seen from the foot of the bed.
- Fig. 3 is an end view of the transport bed seen from the top end of the bed and showing, among other things, the caster wheels with forks .
- Fig. 4 is a top view of the transport bed with the aid strap grip assembled.
- Fig. 5 is a view from beneath which shows the torsion spring mechanism under the "heart support tray” and a part of the meachanism for the extension piece.
- Fig. 1 shows a lateral view of the transport bed with the "heart support tray” raised (la) .
- the "heart support tray” (la) could formally be called the part of the bed bottom which supports the transported person's upper body and head.
- the foot of the bed (lb) which supports the transported person's feet, is hinged in (lc) , together with the "heart support tray” (la) .
- the folding point (lc) is at the same time attached to the frame of the bed (Id) .
- the "heart support tray” is supported by a stepless, telescopic, adjustable holding device (lg) (Fig.3) which is spring loaded to press upwards; and which in the preferred embodiment can be regulated by a hydraulic valve which is operated by a handle (3") .
- the angle of the foot of the bed (not shown) is regulated with the aid of two corresponding stepless hydraulic spring loaded cylinders (li, j) , with the piston and valve being operated by a handle (li') .
- a hydraulic piston (lg) is installed which, in one version of the embodiment, could consist of two flat irons which are welded at the edges, between the caster wheels' (2) fasteners in the frame, but in a track (If) which is installed standing across from the transverse rod (lh) between the caster wheels' fastening points and across the hydraulic cylinder.
- the extension piece (le) can for example be installed telescopically on two or more rods (Ik) which slide through lined horizontal holes in a flat-lying hollow contour (le) which is attached between the side frames at the posterior end of the foot of the bed (lb) .
- the rods (Ik) could, in the preferred embodiment, be extended to a maximum of 23cm, so that the shortest length of the bed is 190cm and the longest length is 213cm.
- the transport bed has caster wheels (2) which are assembled in forks which can be rotated on each of their vertical axes, which have arranged ro atable in-bearings in the bed's main frame.
- the wheels should preferably have brakes (3) installed on one of the pair of wheels; but it is also possible to install brakes on all of the wheels.
- lockable brake clamps (3') are installed at the top end of the bed.
- Height adjustable side straps (4) shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4, have locking devices (4') which, in the preferred embodiment, consist of locking pins which can be pushed into holes, both through the feet of the side bridle and the corresponding holes in the bed frame (Id) .
- the side bridles (4) in the preferred embodiment, are upholstered (12) out of consideration for the person being transported. In the preferred embodiment, the side bridles (4) are removable.
- the bed is constructed with holding bridles or straps (7) which are assembled onto both the "heart support tray” (la) and at bottom end of the bed (lb) .
- the holding straps (7) are arranged to hold and keep a single, undivided, all-covering main mattress (6a) (not shown) and an all-covering pressure relief mattress (6b) (not shown) , which are both at least 65cm in breadth, which corresponds to the full breadth of an adult person of normal build, even when the person concerned is lying with their arms by their side, or when the person concerned is lying on their side with their knees pulled up almost to a right angle.
- the distance between the axes (d) (Fig.l), and the breadth between the wheels across the bed (e and f) (Fig.3), are arranged adaptable to the largest dimensions which exist for wheelchair lifts installed for use in one-man operated cars.
- Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 show a bridle (11) from the top end of the frame of the bed, which is assembled on a bayonette fastener (lib) , which has a support grip (lie) with which the person being transported can pull themselves up and which can be gathered up into a locking clip (lid) on the bridle (11) .
- This bridle is arranged to allow the person being transported to grab hold of the support handle (lie) and lift themselves up in order to change their position in the bed; or to support the person as they are either getting out of bed, sitting up or lying down.
- the bridle (11) is, in the preferred embodiment, upholstered (13) .
- the handle (lie) is formed in such a way that it can be removed in order to make room for a drip bag, bags of blood or any other medical equipment for use during the trip, whether or not medical personnel are going to monitor the person being transported during the time in which transportation is taking place. In the event that the handle (lie) is removed in order to make room for a drip, bags of blood or any other medical equipment, then that particular area of use is omitted from the concept and intended use of the invention.
- the wheels have relatively large spring pneumatic tyres (15) , 10"x 2" in dimension.
