Cette invention a trait à un dispositif permettant une connexion sélective de porteuse commune téléphone-téléphone en fonction de données tarifaires fournies par la porteuse. Ce dispositif comprend un groupement de modules de matériels et de logiciels de traitement des données interconnectés (par exemple, une unité de commande, une interface et un appareil de composition automatique). L'unité de commande accepte un numéro composé par un client, extrait de ce numéro l'emplacement d'adresse, effectue la lecture en temps réel, recherche pour cet emplacement le fournisseur de communications le meilleur marché à partir d'une table de tarifs et génère une séquence de numérotation comportant le numéro composé par le client, la désignation de fournisseur étant remplacée par celle du fournisseur le meilleur marché. L'interface téléphone local reçoit le numéro composé par le client et fait parvenir ce numéro à l'unité de commande. L'appareil de composition automatique connecté à la ligne extérieure accepte la séquence de numérotation générée par l'unité de commande et envoie des signaux de numérotation correspondant à la séquence sur la ligne extérieure. Dans la réalisation préférée de cette invention, les tables de tarifs de plusieurs dispositifs sont mises à jour en parallèle et ceci, à l'aide de l'installation de radiodiffusion d'un prestataire de services de communication qui utilise une transmission à fréquence radio ou à hyperfréquence pour diffuser la mise à jour de table de tarifs. Dans une autre réalisation, c'est une capacité de réserve de bande passante du prestataire principal de services de communication (par exemple, la compagnie téléphonique locale) ou une capacité de réserve de bande passante d'un prestataire de télévision par câble, ou bien un prestataire de services de téléphone cellulaire ou analogue, qui diffuse les mises à jour de la table de tarifs.
