Definitions
- This invention generally relates to a vehicle communication system and, more particularly to a system having a single antenna that collects radio signals and selectively transmitted signals from a remote transmitter device.
- a variety of remote access systems are available for vehicles. Examples include vehicle security systems and remote ignition switches.
- vehicle security systems There are several challenges in designing an effective system presented by the requirements of vehicle manufacturers. For example, vehicle manufacturers prefer that antennas that are used for receiving signals to operate a vehicle security system be hidden from view. Antennas for vehicle security systems typically have to be supported on the vehicle in a hidden location such as in the trunk or under the dashboard in the vehicle. This presents two problems.
- an antenna that is effectively hidden within a vehicle is typically shielded from signals that are provided by a remote transmitter such as those housed within a key fob. Even if the vehicle structure does not completely shield an antenna from a transmitted signal, typically there is at least an undesirable fading effect. Therefore, although hidden antennas provide better aesthetics, it is difficult to achieve a direct and clear communication link between a remote transmitter and such an antenna.
- auxiliary systems including antennas for vehicle security system receivers. Similar concerns are encountered with respect to the remote transmitter or transceiver. Accordingly, the electronic components that are currently implemented in most vehicle security systems are relatively small in scale and require geometries that introduce appreciable losses within the system. To compensate for these design considerations, increased costs are typically incurred in order to design a system that is workable.
- this invention is a vehicle communication system that integrates the radio receiver antenna with a second receiver, which is preferably used to control a vehicle security system.
- a system designed according to this invention includes a remote signal transmitter that is located remotely from the vehicle and can be activated to selectively transmit a communication signal.
- An antenna is supported on the exterior of the vehicle and typically extends away from the surface of the vehicle. It should be understood that other antenna locations come within the scope of this invention. This would include antennas mounted within windshields or event within the vehicle interior.
- a radio receiver which is coupled to the antenna such that broadcasted radio waves that are collected by the antenna are received by the radio, is supported on the vehicle.
- a second receiver is also supported on the vehicle and coupled to the antenna such that communication signals transmitted from the remote transmitter are collected by the antenna and received by the second receiver.
- a signal separator is coupled between the antenna and the radio receiver and between the antenna and the second receiver such that the signal separator directs the collected radio signals to the radio receiver and the collected communication signal to the second receiver.
- the signal separator is a diplexer that categorizes AM/FM radio signals into a low band category.
- the low band category signals are directed to the radio receiver through a first output on the diplexer.
- the diplexer also preferably categorizes the remotely transmitted communication signal into a high band category and provides the high band signals to the second receiver through a second output.
- FIGURE 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of a system designed according to this invention.
- FIGURE 2 is a schematic illustration of selected components of the embodiment of Figure 1.
- FIGURE 3 is a schematic illustration of an alternate embodiment of selected components of the embodiment of Figure 1.
- FIG 1 diagrammatically illustrates a vehicle communication system 20.
- a remote transmitter 22 preferably is disposed in a key fob.
- the remote transmitter 22 includes one or more switches 24, 26 that is selectively actable to selectively generate a communication signal.
- the communication signal is transmitted from the transmitter 22 toward the vehicle 30.
- An antenna 32 is supported on the exterior of the vehicle 30. The antenna 32 collects the signal transmitted from the transmitter 22.
- the antenna 32 is coupled to a radio receiver 34 and a second receiver 36.
- the second receiver 36 preferably is a receiver that receives and processes the communicational signal from the transmitter 22.
- the receiver 36 is a portion of a vehicle security system that includes an engine control unit 38, which can be used, for example, as an ignition kill switch to prevent unauthorized use of the vehicle.
- the vehicle security system preferably also includes a door lock unit 40 for selectively actuating door locks 42 to control access to the vehicle 30.
- This invention includes the use of a single antenna 32 for receiving broadcast radio signals that are received and processed by the radio receiver 34.
- the radio receiver 34 preferably is a conventional AM/FM radio receiver.
- the same antenna 32 collects the transmitted signal from the transmitter 22.
- the second receiver 36 is also coupled to the antenna 32 so that the signal from the transmitter 22 can be appropriately processed to achieve the desired effect for the vehicle 30.
- a signal separator 46 is coupled between the antenna 32 and the receivers 34 and 36, respectively.
- the signal separator 46 preferably is a diplexer.
- the signal separator 46 includes a single input 48 that is coupled directly to the antenna 32.
- a first output 50 is coupled to the radio receiver 34.
- a second output 52 is coupled to the second receiver 36.
- the signal separator 46 separates the collected radio signals into a low band category and the collected transmitted signal from the transmitter 22 into a high band category.
- the low band category signals are provided on the output 50 to the radio receiver 34.
- the high band category signals are provided through the output 52 to the second receiver 36.
- the diplexer 46 isolates the high band signals from the low band signals, which prevents interference in communicating with the receivers 34 and 36.
- the term "signal separator" is to be interpreted to include a single device as schematically shown in Figure 2 but is not limited to such an arrangement.
- the radio receiver 34 is modified to include a filter 70 that allows only a selected range of radio frequency signals to be received into the receiver 34.
- the second receiver 36 is also modified to include filter 72 that filters out the radio frequency signals within the selected range of the filter 70 associated with the radio receiver 34. Together, the filters 70 and 72 comprise a signal separator.
- an electronic controller is in communication with the radio receiver 34 and the second receiver 36.
- the controller 60 can be any conventional microprocessor or other suitable electronics that is used to selectively activate the components of the vehicle security system such as the engine control unit 38 and the vehicle lock unit 40 in response to the collected signal from the transmitter 22.
- the controller 60 can also be used to control a variety of other vehicle subsystems and associated functions.
- the second receiver 36 is a remote keyless entry receiver that communicates directly with the door lock unit 40 to control the locked condition of the vehicle 30 responsive to the signal from the transmitter 22.
- an antenna such as the external antenna 32 provides the significant advantage of having a direct line of sight between the transmitter 22 and the antenna 32. This allows for better cornmunication between the remote transmitter 22 and the receivers within the vehicle. Moreover, relatively less expensive components can be utilized within the transmitter 22 and there is no need for an expensive antenna to be added to the vehicle.
- Additional advantages of a vehicle communication system designed according to this invention include eliminating the multi-path fading and shielding effect of placing an antenna within a hidden location within a vehicle. Further, the possible range of communication between the remote transmitter 22 and the receivers is increased. Better economies are realized because the system of this invention allows the use of transmitters having less effective radiated power and receivers that need not be as sensitive as were previously required. Additionally, the components of the remote transmitter 22 can be reduced in size without sacrificing system integrity.
- a single module 62 can be designed and placed in the vehicle where the radio receiver 34 is normally positioned. This provides the advantage of eliminating additional wiring and antenna systems that otherwise were required, which reduces weight, cost, design logistics and complexity and increases reliability.
