Abstract
An electrically heated griller (10) for grilling foodstuffs having, in use, a generally horizontal grilling zone (19), said grilling zone (19) including a plurality of grill members disposed in a predetermined pattern with gaps or spaces (13) therebetween, at least some of said grill members being formed by electric heating element means (11).
Description
GRILLER UNIT
The present invention relates to improvements to grillers for the grilling of foodstuffs, such as steaks, utilising an electric heating element as the heat source. Electric grillers are well known. One such product comprises essentially a flat plate heated from underneath by an electric heating element, which heating element is commonly a mineral insulated metal sheathed element known as a "calrod". This is usually clamped or bonded to the flat plate and commonly controlled either by a thermostat similar to the probe on an electric frypan, or by energy regulators (simmer stats) that do not sense temperature.
A further type of electric griller available in the market today is shown and described in U.S. Patent No. 5,355,779. This griller more closely resembles spaced grill bars commonly used on "hot rock" barbecues, that is to say, that it has bars and gaps and cooks by direct contact with the bars and by radiated and convected heat from the bars. The grill bars are again typically heated by an electric heating element embedded into the underside of the casting forming the grill bars. U.S. Patent No. 5,355,779 describes that the heating element is recessed up into the main bars of the grill so that fat liberated during cooking cannot contact the hot element. The concept of griller cooking units of the general type shown in U.S. Patent No. 5,355,779 is good but these arrangements do have a number of short comings including :- (i) because the grilling region has gaps, it is quite difficult to find a position / configuration for the heating element and the correct spacings and cross- sections to ensure even heat distribution; (ii) similarly, it is difficult to position a temperature probe as it will always be "remote" due to the long heat paths dictated by the grill bar concept. As a result, controls are either non existent or are only of the energy regulator type; (iii) to attain reasonably even heat distribution, the bars of the construction are quite heavy in cross-section, particularly the main bars carrying the heating element. As a result, the unit is relatively costly to produce;
(iv) further, because of the high mass of material in the cast grill construction, the heat up times (typically ten to fifteen minutes) is quite long whereby energy is wasted and use of the unit is inconvenient. Similarly, there is a relatively long cool down period at the end of a cooking process where absorbed energy is lost. Design of such grillers is controlled by the maximum wattage allowed, the maximum temperature permitted by coatings commonly used over aluminium castings normally used, and even heating requirements;
(v) the grillers cannot be easily and inexpensively zoned for different temperatures. This can only be done by using two (or more) heating elements which is a costly option.
The objective therefore of the present invention is to provide an improved griller arrangement for grilling foodstuffs which will overcome some or all of the aforementioned disadvantages of currently available products of this type. Accordingly, the present invention provides a griller for grilling foodstuffs having a generally horizontal grilling zone, said grilling zone including a plurality of grill members disposed in a predetermined pattern with gaps or spaces therebetween, at least some of said grill members being formed by electric heating element means. In accordance with a second aspect, an electrically heated griller for grilling foodstuffs having, in use, a plurality of elongate grill members disposed in a predetermined pattern with gaps or spaces therebetween and at least a portion of said grill members being disposed in a generally horizontal plane defining a grilling zone, at least some of said grill members being formed by electric heating element means Conveniently, in one preferred embodiment all such grill members might be directly formed by electric heating means. Conveniently, the electric heating means may be one or more heating elements with the or each said heating element being insulated, preferably by mineral insulation, and sheathed in metal commonly known as "calrods". The outer metal sheathing of the calrod may be selected from metals suitable for use in cooking applications such as stainless steel but the arrangement does not preclude the use of aluminium or other steels suitably coated with non-stick or other surface coatings or the like. If
desired, the outer metal sheathing of the or each calrod used might be suitably shaped, for example, by flattening on the top surface to provide a larger cooking surface.
Conveniently, in one preferred embodiment the grill members are disposed with at least two adjacent elongated portions spaced uniformly apart along the length of said elongated portions. Preferably, all said grill members are disposed with adjacent said elongated portions spaced uniformly apart along the length of said elongated portions and said elongated portions being equally spaced apart across at least a region of said griller. In one possible embodiment, one said grill member is provided in said region with a plurality of spaced elongated portions connected together in a serpentine configuration. In another possible embodiment at least two grill members are provided in said region with each said grill member having a plurality of spaced elongated portions connected together in a serpentine configuration. In a further possible embodiment a plurality of said grill members are provided in said region, each said grill member having two spaced elongated portions connected at one end by a semi-circular end section. Each of the end sections may extend over 180° or in an alternative arrangement, extend over greater than 180°. Conveniently adjacent semi-circular end sections extending over greater than 180° may be secured to one another. In a still further possible embodiment, a plurality of said grill members are provided in said region, each said grill member having one only said elongated portion not connected to any other said grill member.
In one preferred arrangement, free ends of each said grill member formed by electric heating element means are received within a hollow support member within which electrical connection is made to the electric conduction means thereof, said hollow support member being disposed on at least one side of said grilling zone. Alternatively, free ends of each said grill member formed by electric heating element means may be received within a pair of hollow support members located on opposed sides of said grilling zone, electrical connection being made to the electric conduction means of said electric heating element means within at least one of said hollow support members. Preferably tray means is provided under each grilling zone and the tray means and grill
members may be separably arranged.
Arrangements according to the present invention have a number of advantages, including :-
(i) very fast heat up times (of the order of two minutes); (ii) very fast cool down times;
(iii) because of (i) it is possible to substantially reduce the wattage of the griller without adversely affecting its performance; (iv) no point on the heating element needs to be above the actual cooking temperature with the result that keeping fat off the element is no longer an issue;
(v) the arrangement allows a choice of many different materials for the cooking surface; (vi) low temperature elements mean less radiation onto surfaces below such as drip trays which allows for a compact tray design with consequent cost savings and minimising smoke generation during grilling;
(vii) the arrangement may use only one heating element formed to the desired shape or a multiplicity of simple straight elements assembled into the desired grill configuration. The latter permits great flexibility in zoning for different heat levels which can be controlled independently or switched in or out of circuit to further reduce power consumption.
The invention will be further described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings illustrating a number of preferred aspects of the invention. In the drawings :-
Figures 1 , 2, 3 and 4 are schematic drawings showing the general layout of alternative preferred embodiments according to the present invention;
Figures 5 and 6 show schematically two possible arrangements for connecting the heating elements; and
Figure 7 shows four alternative configurations for the shape of the outer sheath of the heating element or elements. Figure 1 illustrates one preferred embodiment where a griller unit 10 is formed by a single heating element 1 1 laid out or disposed in a serpentine manner with a plurality of straight lengths 12 each parallel to one another and
spaces 13 therebetween and connected by semicircular end sections 14, 15. The free ends 16, 17 of the element 11 enter a box shaped handle or support member 18 with appropriate electrical connections being made therein as described hereinafter. The end sections 14 might be connected to the support member 18 and if desired, a second handle support member might be located connected to the end sections 15. The unit top portions of the heating element lengths 12 are located in a generally horizontal plane forming a grilling zone 19. The griller unit would normally include some form of drip collection tray 30 beneath the grilling zone 19. Figure 2 illustrates an arrangement similar to Figure 1 except in this case a plurality of heating elements 20 are provided each with two straight parallel element lengths 12 separated by gaps 13. The free ends 21 , 22 of each element enter the support member 18 for appropriate electrical connections with the other ends of the lengths 12 being connected by semicircular sections 23. Again, a second support member might be located adjacent the end sections 23.
Figure 3 illustrates a configuration similar to Figure 2 except that the end sections 23 are formed semicircular portions of greater than 180°.
Figure 4 illustrates an arrangement where a plurality of straight length heating elements 24 are provided each having straight portions 12 with spaces 13 therebetween to provide the desired grill pattern. The heating elements 24 each pass between opposed support members 18 and 25.
The cold tails of the element ends that enter the handle or support members 18, 25 are conveniently each sealed against the ingress of moisture (water). The cold tails are preferably made from non-corrodible material. The element tails (or electrical connections) are preferably done by soldering, spot welding, screws or other fasteners, or the like. The connecting wires can take any form but it is considered preferred if they are stiff single conductors shaped to suit the desired connecting pattern (for zoning or otherwise) and spot welded or soldered onto the bold tails. The connections to the power connecting plug pins may be similarly created. Thus, this whole array is connected and in itself is moisture or waterproof. It is believed that the hollow handle or support
members 18, 25 would be difficult to seal against the ingress of water and to avoid the need to do so, it is proposed to manufacture these members with sufficient perforations to ensure any water that enters can easily or readily escape therefrom. Residual water on the electrical connections can be accepted without any safety or other problems and, as a result, the whole unit can be immersed in water for cleaning purposes.
Figure 5 illustrates one convenient means for electrically connecting the cold tails of the heating elements.
Figure 6 shows one convenient switching control arrangement capable of use for zoning the grilling region of the unit. The arrangements according to the present invention lend themselves easily to numerous different zoning options including series / parallel for high / low grilling temperatures.
Figure 7 illustrates a number of differing possible shape configurations for the outer sheath of the heating element or elements. The sheath might be circular 26 or circular 26 with a flat surface 27, triangular 28 or rectangular 29.
In each case, where a flat surface is provided, that surface could form part of the grilling surface or zone 19.
Claims
1. An electrically heated griller for grilling foodstuffs having, in use, a generally horizontal grilling zone, said grilling zone including a plurality of grill members disposed in a predetermined pattern with gaps or spaces therebetween, at least some of said grill members being formed by electric heating element means.
2. An electrically heated griller for grilling foodstuffs having, in use, a plurality of elongate grill members disposed in a predetermined pattern with gaps or spaces therebetween and at least a portion of said grill members being disposed in a generally horizontal plane defining a grilling zone, at least some of said grill members being formed by electric heating element means.
3. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein all said grill members are formed by electric heating element means.
4. An electrically heated griller according to any one of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the or each said electric heating element means includes an electric conductor means sheathed in insulation and surrounded by an outer metallic sheath.
5. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 4 wherein said insulation is a normal insulation means.
6. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 4 or Claim 5 wherein said metallic sheath includes at least one flat surface, said at least one flat surface, in use, being located in the horizontal grilling zone.
7. An electrically heated griller according to any one of Claims 1 to 6 wherein said grill members are disposed with at least two adjacent elongated portions spaced uniformly apart along the length of said elongated portions.
8. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 7 wherein all said grill members are disposed with adjacent said elongated portions spaced uniformly apart along the length of said elongated portions and said elongated portions being equally spaced apart across at least a region of said griller.
9. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 8 wherein one said grill member is provided in said region with a plurality of spaced elongated portions connected together in a serpentine configuration.
10. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 8 wherein at least two said grill members are provided in said region with each said grill member having a plurality of spaced elongated portions connected together in a serpentine configuration.
11. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 8 wherein a plurality of said grill members are provided in said region, each said grill member having two spaced elongated portions connected at one end by a semi-circular end section.
12. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 11 wherein each said semi-circular end section extends over 180┬░.
13. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 11 wherein each said semi-circular end section extends over greater than 180┬░.
14. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 13 wherein adjacent said semi-circular end sections are secured to one another.
15. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 8 wherein a plurality of said grill members are provided in said region, each said grill member having one only said elongated portion not connected to any other said grill member.
16. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 4 or any one of Claims 5 to 15 when appended to Claim 4 wherein free ends of each said grill member formed by electric heating element means are received within a hollow support member within which electrical connection is made to the electric conduction means thereof, said hollow support member being disposed on at least one side of said grilling zone.
17. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 4 or any one of Claims 5 to 15 when appended to Claim 4 wherein free ends of each said grill member formed by electric heating element means are received within a pair of hollow support members located on opposed sides of said grilling zone, electrical connection being made to the electric conduction means of said electric heating element means within at least one of said hollow support members.
18. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 16 or Claim 17 wherein the or each said support member is perforated to allow water to drain therefrom.
19. An electrically heated griller according to any one of Claims 1 to 18 wherein tray means is provided beneath said grilling zone.
20. An electrically heated griller according to Claim 19 wherein said tray means and said grill members are separable.
