Abstract
Bandsaw blade for applications where clogging of the cut by sawdust is a problem, having cutting teeth (11) at a front edge of the blade, and aligned straight portions (13) separated by short shallow notches (14) at a rear edge.
Description
RANDSAW BLADE
Background
It is known that wide band saws for wood can be made with rows of teeth at both edges, cither for sawing in both directions, in which case all teeth are similar, or for smoothing the cut surface, in which case the rear teeth are smaller with mainly lateral cutting edges. The latter type is also used for sawing abrasive wood where it might be necessary to withdraw the saw if the cutting teeth have become dull, to avoid wood slivers obstructing the reverse motion.
On narrow bandsaw blades such as used in the furniture industry, rear teeth of the known types cannot be used, since they would increase the risk of bending fatigue cracks too much. It is still, however, a common occurence that the bandsaw has to be withdrawn from a cut for geometrical reasons, and this might be difficult if the sawn piece contains glue or adhesive which may cause fine sawdust to clog the cut.
The present invention concerns a bandsaw blade for the furniture industry, where the rear edge of the blade is designed to prevent and counteract any tendency to clog the cut. while retaininc the fatinue resistance. 0
Description
A bandsaw blade according to the invention is described with reference to figure 1. showing a lateral view of part of the blade.
"> The bandsaw blade has one longitudinal front edge with cutting teeth ( 1 1 ). one blade body ( 12) and one rear edge. The rear edge comprises straight portions ( 13) and notches ( 14). The teeth or their cutting tips ( 1 1 ) should preferably be made of harder material than the blade body (12). and could be made of carbide or high speed steel welded to the blade bodv bv known methods.

CONFIRMATION
The feed force needed to bring the teeth into cutting engagement with the sawn piece is usually applied by sliding or rotating contact of the rear edge against a substantially flat pressure pad above and below the sawn piece. For smooth cutting, any notches ( 14) in the rear edge must be shorter than the pressure pad. which then contacts the straight portions ( 13) only. When the bandsaw is withdrawn from a cut it is still running, and if the rear edge of the blade then encounters some clogged sawdust, the rapid alternation between notches ( 14) and straight portions ( 13) will cause vibrations of the sawdust and loosen it. When sawing crooked cuts, where withdrawing the saw may be critical, the vibrations will occur already during sawing and prevent clogging from the beginning. The notches will also create an air stream in the same direction as the blade motion, helping to clear the sawdust from the cut. This effect will be especially beneficial when sawing a pack of boards, where sawdust might otherwise enter between the boards and cause misalignement.
This type of uneven rear edge should not be confused with what is known from metalcutting handsaws and described in patents US 4.023.448. US 4.195.543. and US 4.423.653. For those saws the feed force is applied to the rear edge at local contact points with rollers, and the purpose is to create in-plane vibrations of the teeth when cutting. The rear edge depressions of those saws are longer, varying from ten times the tooth pitch ( 1 5) to the ull blade length.
For all handsaws, bending fatigue is critical, and according to the invention the shape and location of the notches ( 14) are chosen so as not to impair the fatigue resistance. Each notch should be short, with a longitudinal extent no longer than the average tooth pitch ( 1 5). The radius of curvature should be larger than the depth of the notch and larger than the radius of the gullets between the teeth. Each notch should be located opposite to a tooth so as not to cause a narrow section of the blade. The distance between notches should be equal to the tooth pitch ( 1 5 ) or a multiple of it. less than thirty times the pitch. With a feed pressure pad longer than the tooth pitch and with all straight portions ( 12) aligned, the forward feed during sawing will be smooth.
The notches can be created by grinding, milling or punching, and for extra high fatigue resistance the bottom of the notch could be grit blasted.
A bandsaw blade according to the invention should be used wherever clogging of sawdust makes it difficult to withdraw a bandsaw from a cut. such as in furniture industry, wood milling industry, and manufacture of wood based boards, plastic laminates and soft metals.
