Description
Ignition device for an outdoor stove
TECHNICAL FIELD:
The present invention relates to the area of portable camping stoves such as liquid petroleum gas stoves or spirit stoves.
BACKGROUND ART:
Existing camping stoves of this type are ignited by allowing liquid petroleum gas, for instance, to flow from a fuel container through various valves and nozzles up to a burner where it is peripherally, annularly spread and ignited with a cigarette lighter or matches. The problem is that cigarette lighters or matches are not always available or, for some reason, the lighters/matches do not function.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION: The object of the invention is to provide a camping stove of the type previously known which is also provided with a permanently fitted ignition device in order to solve the problems described above in connection with lighting conventional camping stoves.
The object is also to provide an ignition device which equally simply and reliably lights a stove, regardless of whether the power is high or low at the moment of ignition.
Another object of the invention is to provide an ignition device that does not necessarily have to be attached to the camping stove in order to function.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
The ignition device comprises a piezoelectric crystal which, upon being mechanically activated from an ignition button, generates a voltage over the crystal, which voltage in turn gives rise to a spark that ignites the fuel in the stove.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS:
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the designations in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows a partial section through a camping stove with an ignition device in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 shows the camping stove with the ignition device, seen from above.
Figure 3 shows the ignition device mounted on a valve housing for the supply of fuel.
Figure 4 shows the burner of the camping stove arranged in accordance with the present invention. Figure 5 shows an ignition cartridge with a lighter in accordance with the present invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
Figure 1 shows a camping stove 1 of the type under discussion, comprising a valve housing 2 arranged to be connected to a conventional fuel container. The valve housing is arranged having a valve spindle 3 actuated by means of a knob 4 to open or close the flow of fuel through the valve housing 2. A burner is mounted on the upper side of the valve housing and comprises a lower burner part 5 and a burner cover 6. Four internal supports 7 for a container are fitted on the burner cover 6, each support being provided with an external folding support 8 for a container. The burner cover 6 is provided with an angled peripheral ring 9, see also Figure 2, provided with a plurality of outflow openings 10.
Conventionally such a camping stove is lit by turning the knob 4 and thus opening the fuel flow to a relatively low level so that fuel flows into the lower part 5 of the burner, on to the burner cover 6 and out through the outflow openings 10. The stove is then lit by touching an open flame to the easily ignitable fuel flowing out through the openings 10.
Besides the conventional construction described above, an embodiment according to the present invention is also provided with a specially arranged ignition space 11 in the burner cover, in which space a lighter 12, preferably of piezoelectric type, is arranged to be inserted. The lighter 12 comprises a centrally placed electrode 13 surrounded by an insulator 14. The lighter is permanent but is detachably secured to the valve housing 2 by means of a snap connection 15.
It can be seen in Figure 3 that the lighter 12 is provided with a non-locking ignition device 16, see also Figure 1 , in the form of a push-button. The ignition device 16 runs transversely in an ignition housing 17 arranged perpendicular to the central line of the lower part 5 of the burner. The ignition device 16 is spaced from the burner 5, 6 to avoid the user burning himself when lighting the stove. The lighter 12 thus extends from the ignition device up to and into the burner cover 6. A piezoelectric crystal, not shown, in the ignition housing is activated manually by the ignition device 16, thereby producing a spark between the tip of the electrode 13 and an ignition cartridge 18, see Figures 4 and 5, which is placed through the burner cover with its centre line parallel to the centre line of the lower burner part 5. The ignition cartridge 18 is placed with its upper opening in connection with the outflow openings 10, as is also clear from Figure 2.
Figure 5 shows the ignition cartridge 18 which is fitted in the burner cover 6 by the cartridge being inserted from above and secured by a flange 19 at its lower end being expanded, i.e. bent outwards. The ignition cartridge 18 is also provided with at least one fuel channel 20 situated in the lower part of the cartridge, close to a restriction 21. The restriction 21 is arranged to seal to some extent between the inner side of the ignition cartridge 18 and the
insulator 14 inserted in the cartridge, to prevent fuel from flowing away from the lighter electrode 13. The upper end part 22 of the ignition cartridge 18 also extends past the electrode 13 of the lighter 12 inserted in the ignition cartridge 18 so that fuel can remain above the insulator 14 but still in the ignition space 11.
The ignition cartridge 18 and insulator 14 are preferably cylindrical in shape, the insulator 14 having an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the ignition cartridge 18.
The function of the ignition cartridge 18 is to allow the fuel, indicated by arrows in Figure 5, to flow in through one or more fuel channels 20 in the lower part of the cartridge, upwardly in the ignition space 11 between the cartridge wall and the insulator 14, on past the electrode 13 of the lighter, and out through the upper end part 22 of the cartridge. A spark between the electrode 13 and the ignition cartridge will immediately cause the fuel flowing in the cartridge to ignite, and thus also the fuel flowing through the outflow openings 10, thereby lighting the stove.
Several other embodiments are feasible within the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
