Abstract

Non-tandem operation between transcoders of a communication network is achieved by identifying transcoder compatibility, as illustrated in FIG. 2. A first transcoder initially double encodes information by transcoding, for example, single encoded speech (52) with pulse code modulation (56). Periodically (60), every consecutive word in a double encoded frame has its least significant bit substituted with sequential bits of a predetermined data pattern (indicative of compatibility) to produce an embedded slow-rate data channel. A second transcoder arranged initially to receive double encoded frames searches (68) for the predetermined data pattern, and re-configures itself to a vo-coder by-pass mode (74-76) if the data pattern is found. A feedback mechanism (78, 90, 54) causes the first transcoder to adopt a vo-coder by-pass mode (82-84), whereby single encoded speech (52), for example, is routed directly through the first and second transcoders without the need of applying double encoding and its associated decoding.
