La présente invention porte sur des procédés visant à éviter ou é réduire le risque de développer une athérosclérose, ainsi qu'à enrayer ou à freiner l'évolution de la maladie athéroscléreuse lorsqu'elle a été constatée cliniquement. Ces procédés consistent noramment à administrer à une personne susceptible de développer une athérosclérose ou ayant déjà une athérosclérose une dose efficace en termes thérapeutiques d'un inhibiteur de réductase de 3-hydroxy-3-méthylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA RI), combiné avec de l'acide folique ou avec un sel ou un ester de celui-ci acceptable sur le plan pharmaceutique.
