- Pressure pads made of silicone rubber are known from SWISS PLASTICS 6 (1984), No. 7-8, pages 23-30. With these prior art tampons, however, prints with fine details cannot be realized in sufficient quality in many cases. There is some improvement through the use of harder tampons. The required higher pressure of the tampon on the object to be printed cannot, however, be increased arbitrarily, so that there are limits, particularly for sensitive objects, to harder tampons. Some improvement in print quality can also be achieved by reducing the tampon stroke speed, which, however, results in reduced printing performance.
- the inventor has set himself the task of creating a tampon of the type mentioned at the outset which, given the hardness of the printing body, enables high printing quality in a wide contact pressure range.

- the coating of the pressure body with a softer material in accordance with the invention enables fine printing patterns of high quality to be produced, which cannot be achieved with conventional tampons, even by precisely adjusting the hardness of the pressure body.
- the essence of the present invention lies in the combination of a relatively hard printing body with a soft support for transferring the printing ink, the thickness of the coating being surprisingly of subordinate importance. In certain cases, a coating thickness in the nanometer range is sufficient. The only thing that is decisive is that the harder base of the pressure body during the printing process still absorbs the majority of the elastic deformation.
- the minimum required thickness of the layer can be determined in simple experiments, the maximum thickness being approximately 5 mm, preferably approximately 2 mm.
- the tampon coated according to the invention can be realized with various materials.
- the pressure body and the coating can consist of completely different materials. However, if a silicone rubber which is customary today is used to manufacture the pressure body, a silicone rubber is also suitable as the softer coating material.
- the mass for the printed matter is cast into a corresponding mold, from which the printed matter can be removed after it has hardened.
- One method suitable for producing the tampon according to the invention is to coat the mold with the softer material provided for the coating in a first step and then to pour the material for the pressure body into the already coated mold in a second step.
- a tampon 10 has a wooden or metal disc 12 and a pressure body 14 connected to it.
- the pressure body 14 consisting of a first material is provided with a coating 16 made of a second material which is softer than the first material.
- the tampon 10 is inserted by means of the disc 12 into a tampon printing machine not shown in the drawing.
- a silicone rubber of ShorO 45 hardness can be used as the material for the pressure body 14 and a material of ShorO 20 hardness for the coating 16, the thickness of the coating 16 being e.g. 0.1 mm.
