It is important to prevent such errors by providing a system for the printer to unambiguously identify the nature of the consumables introduced.
- the viscosity of the ink is an important parameter, because it influences the phenomenon of drop formation. It varies in particular depending on the temperature and the concentration of volatile components. In the case of a deviated continuous jet process, it must be maintained within a determined range, compatible with this process. This regulation is done by the supply of a specific quantity of additive. Some printers regulate the viscosity of the ink at a fixed value, regardless of temperature. Other printers regulate the viscosity of the ink to a set value varying with temperature, so as to obtain a constant concentration of said volatile components. Such a regulation process is described in patent application FR-A-8 812 935. Due to the multiplication of industrial marking applications, the inks are increasingly complex and can contain several volatile components simultaneously. The viscosity setpoints as a function of temperature depend on the proportions of each component and it becomes increasingly difficult to store all the corresponding curves in the memory of the printer.
- US-A-5 283 613 describes an electrophotographic reproduction machine, and a control system allowing the use of one or more replaceable cartridges in such a machine.
- This system includes two memories associated with the cartridge, namely an electronic calculation memory and an electronic flag memory respectively for storing the number of prints made with the cartridge and for checking unauthorized interventions on the first memory.
- JP-A-5 193 127 describes an ink jet printer which uses a plug-in print head cartridge comprising a memory in which the parameters and the print control program are saved.
- EP-A-478 019 describes a cartridge discrimination system for imaging devices. These cartridges are toner cartridges comprising a hollow container to receive the toner powder and a magnetic card to indicate the type or position of the cartridge.
- EP-A-412 459 describes an ink jet printing apparatus using removable cartridges. Information defining the characteristics of the ink used is contained on these cartridges, in the form of resistance values. When a cartridge is inserted, contacts the read resistance value and use this value as the characteristic data of the ink in a table stored in a memory of the printing apparatus 1.
- US-A-5 208 631 describes a system for identifying colorimetric properties of toner in a cartridge of a reproduction machine.

If a new ink cartridge is inserted, some of the data contained in the new label is different and the printer saves these differences at the time of the next communication.
