Description
Cutting tool for gypsum board
The present invention relates to a cutting tool according to the preamble of the claim.
The methods and cutting tools known thus far have deficiencies in accuracy, and the performing of the work takes a great deal of time.
The cutting of a gypsum board is normally carried out in a horizontal plane on a bench intended for the purpose. First, measurements are marked out at both ends of the board at points of the desired width, thereafter a straight-edge, i.e. a maxi¬ mally straight plank or a metal ruler, is placed from one mark to the other. The gypsum board liner is scored along the side of the straight-edge by using a craft knife, and the gypsum is impact-fractured, the board is folded to rest on the liner of the other side, and a cut is made at the fold. A cut effected in this manner may fracture very obliquely, and the finishing work will take relatively much time. In the case of long cuts, it is very difficult to keep the straight-edge correctly oriented, as in cutting a board in half, since a gypsum board is normally 1200 mm wide. Halving such a board is rather diffi¬ cult, since the human reach sets limitations. There are also so-called disc cutters, in which discs rotate on both sides of the board. When the discs become blunt and when the width being cut is great, such a cutter no longer works, since the discs will not penetrate the liner.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate these dis¬ advantages, and to speed up the performance of the work and make it substantially more accurate.
According to the invention, this object can be achieved, since in the present cutter the measuring, cutting and guiding are in
one and the same device.
To put it more precisely, a cutter according to the invention is characterized in what is stated in the characterizing clause of the claim.
The invention is described below in greater detail, with refer¬ ence to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 depicts the cutting tool as seen from above, and Figure 2 depicts the cutting tool as seen in the cutting direction.
The frame of the cutter is made up of a steel tube 1, in the example case the inner dimensions of the steel tube are 18x22 mm. The wall thickness is approx. 1.5-2 mm and the length approx. 170 mm. The wall at the same time serves as a handle. At an angle of 90 degrees to the frame tube there is a U- profile 2, attached by welding and having an inner dimension of 15-20 mm, and its wall thickness is approx. 2 mm. The length of the profile is 200-250 mm, and it serves as the guide part in the cutter.
A slide part 3, running through the frame tube and being equipped with one measuring scale of 0-600 mm and another meas¬ uring scale of 1200-600 mm, has, attached by welding or screw¬ ing to its 9x21 mm steel rod, a blade holder 4.
The blade holder is a 20-25 mm wide and 80-90 mm long U- profile, at one end of which the blade is secured by a wing screw 8. At the other end of the blade holder there is attached a plastic knob 7, which is tightened from below by a screw 9 and by means of which it is easy to guide the blade.
The slide part may be up to 1200-1250 mm long, but the most effective and most accurate work performance is achieved when
it is approx. 750-800 mm long, since in that case the cutter can already be used for halving a normal 1200 mm gypsum board. For this reason the maximum required cutting width of the cut¬ ter is 600 mm. At one end of the slide part there is secured, by means of a 10 M 5x20 screw and a nut, an approx. 5 mm thick and 20x20 mm wide rubber piece 11. This serves as a stopper, preventing the slide part from becoming detached from the frame tube. When necessary, the stopper is detached and the slide part is removed from the frame tube in order to remove any impurities and gypsum dust from the inside of the frame tube, for example by using compressed air.
A cutting width of the device can be seen directly from the scale on the slide part, the forward end 12 of the frame tube serving as the scale-reading point. The cutting width is locked by means of a locking handle 5 attached to the other end of the frame tube by means of a 12 M 8x35 screw and a nut; the handle presses the slide part against the screw. The lever arm of the locking handle will be relatively long, in which case very secure locking is achieved with even a rather small compressive force. By using this cutter, cutting can be performed in a horizontal plane on a bench, as with devices used thus far. It is also possible that a stack of boards is resting, for example, against a wall, which is a rather common method in smaller construction projects and renovation projects. There are also situations, such as narrow corridors, into which a bench will simply not fit, and in such a case the boards must be cut while resting against a wall. In such a case it is al¬ most impossible for one person to cut a 3000 mm long gypsum board by the prior-known straight-edge method. By using the cutter according to the present invention, cutting is very easy.
The above-mentioned oblique fracturing of the gypsum can be eliminated by means of the present cutter by cutting the liners on both sides of the board, in which case the cut edge will be
in a horizontal plane and the finishing work by means of a plane intended for the purpose will be easy and rapid. When partition walls are being clad with boards, a door opening may be within part of a board, in which case one part of the board may be of full width and another part must be made narrower. Even in this case the cutting can be done successfully without other tools, owing to this cutting of the liner on both sides.
In methods known thus far, cuts transverse to the scored cut have been carried out using a saw or the like.
The most efficient operating range of the cutter is approx. from 20 mm to 600 mm, but it can be adjusted steplessly up to 1200 mm. This, however, requires the slide part to be replaced with a longer one, and slide parts can be manufactured as re¬ placement parts. The cutter is very easy to use and light to handle. The dimensional accuracy is high, and the directional stability of the cutter is very good, since the U-profile will remain steadily against the edge of the board.
Replacement of the cutter blade is easy and rapid, requiring the loosening and tightening of only one screw. It is possible to use in the cutter so-called industrial blades, having two- sided blades, in which case four different cutting edges can be obtained by turning the blade.
Options also deviating from that described above are conceiv¬ able within the scope of the invention. Thus, the locking handle may be attached also at its other end, in which case the locking of the slide part is carried out from above. It is also possible to manufacture the entire blade holder and even the slide part of plastic or nylon. The steel part may also be made of aluminium. The cutter can also be manufactured as its mirror image for left-handed persons.
