Definitions
- This invention relates to a novel means and method of preventing the theft of apparatus that can be disabled from operating by the opening or closure of a switching device
- this invention is particularly applicable to automobile theft which is a significant problem in most countries around the world and consumes valuable policing resources in attempting to recover stolen automobiles
- great personal inconvenience is encountered by the owners of stolen vehicles
- this invention can also be used to remotely control apparatus such as televisions or high fidelity radio sets, the remote control of which lends itself to acting as a deterrent to stealing
- this invention enables remote control for other reasons such as preventing children from operating devices at times that their parents do not wish them to have access
- This aspect is of particular relevance to television viewing Whilst this invention is of use in numerous situations, discussion of the prior art is restricted to the field of vehicle immobilisation for the prevention of theft
- Prior Art means in this area comprises many various approaches ranging from systems for the prevention of theft to the immobilisation of the vehicle after being stolen and ultimately the recovery of the stolen vehicle
- This invention relates to the field of vehicle immobilisation and in particular to the immobilisation of a user's vehicle by the transmission of radio frequency signals across the public telephony system which is generally referred to as the cellular telephone network
- Such arrangements are also used for the purpose of indicating the theft or attempted theft of the vehicle to the owner by placing a call to the owner upon the detection of an intrusion into the vehicle by an unauthorised person
- Such systems are detailed in the prior art in various specifications including US4825457 (Lebowitz), US4905271 (Namekawa), US5081667 (D ⁇ o ⁇ ), US4718080 (Serrano) and US5370201 (Inubushi) In all of these specifications, cellular transceivers are used for control and status reporting of the vehicle
- transceiver devices Whilst such systems provide very useful functionality, there is a demand for devices and systems of lesser complexity and lower cost Systems that comprise a transceiver device generally retain the capability to be used for voice communication so that users may utilise all the functionality of the transceiver device This is generally achieved by retaining the transceiver in relatively close proximity to the driver
- a security system it is disadvantageous to have components of the system visible to potential thieves Any component of a security system that is visible is vulnerable to attack or tampering and is hence best avoided Consequently, in an attempt to reduce complexity and cost, there have been various alternative systems that have been proposed that incorporate a receiver only and these systems generally employ a paging device
- These systems comprise a significant cost advantage over transceiver based systems and as a result, can generally be installed in a secluded part of the vehicle as the receiver is limited to the single purpose of acting to receive an immobilisation command from an owner It is highly desirable to incorporate a paging device into a switching apparatus with minimal re-configuration or adaptation to
- a significant disadvantage of a receiver only based system is a consequent reduction in the certainty of signal reception
- Transceiver based systems that are capable of transmitting signals back to the owner can report the status of the vehicle thereby giving the owner certainty that the vehicle has been immobilised.
- Receiver only based systems cannot provide this feedback and hence fall into a class of systems referred to as "open loop" control systems. Accordingly, with receiver only systems, the certainty of the correct signal being transmitted is paramount to the correct operation of the system.
- Paging systems are generally operated by a central receiving agency that can be contacted by any telephone that can communicate with the public telephone system Upon calling the central agency, an operator requests the number of the pager to which the caller wishes to send a message and upon detailing the message to the operator, the message is transmitted to the appropriate pager
- the transmission of the message to the pager may be by various means including land based transmission systems or satellite means
- Other specifications detail the method of detecting transmitted codewords to a pager unit by detecting the varying electromagnetic flux associated with an audio speaker which is contained within the pager All of the disclosed methods are generally considered to be unreliable and are considered by many to be sufficiently unreliable to incorporate into an "open loop" vehicle immobilising system.
- the other type of system avoids the complexity of the vehicle based apparatus and the requirement of such apparatus to extract codes and store and compare codes by not requiring the transmission of a security code and hence will disable the vehicle upon reception of a "calling" signal only to the paging unit.
- This approach significantly increases the confidence that a signal that is transmitted is received and hence the switching effected
- a significant disadvantage of such systems is the increased likelihood of such systems being abused by users placing calls to the pager unit without appropriate authority and an increased likelihood of human error in placing a call to an incorrect pager and hence resulting in vehicles being disabled when such an action was not intended
- this invention also simplifies the process of performing a switching operation
- the remote switching service is based upon each subscriber being assigned a unique call connection number such that calls connected to the service inherently identify the subscriber and hence obviates the requirement for separate identification of the remote switching apparatus that the user wishes to activate
- the invention also comprises automated verbal instructions to guide users through the process of performing a switching operation
- this invention is also useful for remotely disabling other devices such as televisions, radio sets, refrigerators, freezers and similar electrically powered devices Such use could extend to a rental agency wishing to be able to disable such devices if accounts are not duly paid and enable reconnection of the device upon payment of the account Likewise, this invention may also be used by a vehicle rental agency wishing to disable any vehicle that has not been returned at the prearranged time and place As was also previously highlighted, the ability to remotely disable these types of devices would deter many thieves from stealing the equipment
- a remotely activated switching system comprising the steps of user transmitting a signal across the public telephone network to engage a computer means said signal identifying a remote switching apparatus, user receiving verbal instructions from said computer means for the purpose of guiding said user through the process of transmitting required information to said computer means said user being requested to transmit information to ascertain the authority of the user to activate said remote switching apparatus said computer means comparing said identified remote switching apparatus and said information substantiating the authority of said user with information previously stored thereby enabling confirmation of the authority of the user to activate said remote switching apparatus said computer means initiating transmission of a signal to the remote switching apparatus upon confirmation of appropriate authority of the user, and said user receiving verbal indication of transmission or otherwise of signal to said remote switching apparatus
- a remotely activated switching system wherein a remote switching apparatus comprises a receiving means but not a transmitting means and said signal transmitted to said remote switching apparatus comprises a calling signal only and does not comprise any information relating to the authority of the user to activate said remote switching apparatus
- a remotely activated switching system wherein a remote switching apparatus comprises a switching means operatively connected to the device to be remotely switched, such that operation of the switching means either enables or disables a supply of energy to the device, and that upon transmission of an activation signal to the remote switching apparatus said switching means residing in its initial state is actuated to occupy its opposite state such that energy is either supplied or restricted to the device
- a remote switch activating system comprising a computer means that is electrically connected to the public telephone network, said computer means, under the control of a software program also being electrically connected to a signal transmission means
- the system further comprises remote switching apparatus that is located in close vicinity to, and preferably within, the device that the user wishes to be able to remotely control
- Said remote switching apparatus comprises a receiving means and a switching mechanism electrically interconnected such that upon the receiving means receiving an appropriate signal the switching mechanism is activated
- the remote switching apparatus comprises a pager which can be uniquely identified and signalled
- Each remote switching apparatus is assigned a security code that the user must be able to transmit at the time of requesting activation of the remote switching mechanism
- the computer means also comprises a database of numbers corresponding to remote switching apparatus and corresponding security codes If the correct security code is transmitted by the user to the computer means then the computer means will confirm the authority of the user to activate the switching mechanism and request confirmation that the user wishes to proceed by pressing a specific key on the handset keypad Upon depressing that key, the computer means will then initiate transmission of a calling signal only to the remote switching apparatus Receipt of a calling signal by the remote switching apparatus then activates the switching mechanism
- the system also embodies many other advantages over prior art systems in that upon noticing that a device has been stolen, most people tend to be emotionally upset and thereby do not operate equipment as efficiently and effectively as they normally would
- this invention enables users to be guided through the process of remote switching of their device with minimal information required to be supplied thereby alleviating the level of concentration and memorisation of the steps required to activate the remote switching apparatus
- the computer means enables the operation of the system without the requirement of human intervention or operator assistance This also extends to the maintenance of security codes for individual users as the software program can enable the computer to enable users to maintain the database of remote switching apparatus and security codes for individual devices Certain users may wish to have the same security code for all the devices for which they have a remote switching apparatus fitted In extending this concept further, a user may wish to be presented with a voice menu of devices that may be switched upon calling the computer and hence could choose from a menu of devices to switch and then provide the security code to enable the chosen device to be remotely switched
- Fig 1 is a circuit diagram detailing the component level interconnection for the device mounted switching apparatus comprising a conventional paging unit
- Fig 2 is a block diagram representation of the software control program required to effect control of the switching means of the apparatus as detailed in Fig 1 ,
- Fig 3 is a block diagram representation of the software control program required to effect control of the computer connected to the public telephone system
- a 12VDC power supply of a motor vehicle is connected to a power supply conditioning circuit comprising F1 , D2, U3, C3, C4, C5, U4, R5, R6, C6 and C7 and from which a stabilised +12v power supply, a +5V power supply (referred to throughout Fig 1 as Vcc), and a voltage suitable for supply to a standard RADIO PAGER (referred to as VPAGER) are derived for supply to appropriate sections of the electrical circuit
- the value of the voltage VPAGER is derived from the choice of circuit components R5 and R6 and can be chosen to supply a voltage that is suitable for the particular requirements of the RADIO PAGER
- Both U3 and U4 comprise commercially available voltage regulators F1 represents a fusible device to protect the motor vehicle wiring system from excessive current supply and D2 represents a zener diode or alternative transient absorbing device for the purpose of maintaining a relatively stable value of +12v across the electrolytic capacitor C2 which also acts as the input voltage to the voltage regulator U3
- the output of voltage regulator U4 acts as the power supply for the RADIO PAGER which may comprise any receiving device capable of receiving radio frequency signals
- An output from the RADIO PAGER is selected based upon the particular choice of receiver and is represented by "pager output +" and "pager output -" in Fig 1
- This output may comprise a signal generated by the receiving device to illuminate an inbuilt light emitting diode device upon call reception or alternatively a signal generated to sound an audible warning device
- further conditioning circuitry may be required prior to connecting the signal to device U2 which represents an opto isolating device
- Device U2 optically isolates the output signal from the RADIO PAGER from the microcontroller U1 which in the preferred embodiment comprises a Motorola 68HC705K1 Device U2 in combination with resistor R1 and Vcc also acts to condition the output signal from the RADIO PAGER such that during periods of signal presence of sufficient magnitude across the points pager output + and pager output - the output signal
- the connections to the relay are connected in such a way that switching of the relay contacts causes an interruption of an essential supply of energy to the vehicle
- the relay device is connected in series with the electrical supply line to the fuel pump of the vehicle Switching of the relay device in this configuration thereby causing the supply of fuel to the vehicle engine to be interrupted
- the microcontroller upon applying power to the microcontroller U1 , the microcontroller exercises an initialisation process detailed at step 10 Upon completion of the initialisation process, the program enters a continual loop comprising steps 12, 14, 16 and 18 At step 12, the software performs the task of counting the number of pulses emitted by the paging device by counting the number of voltage transitions that occur at the interrupt pin IRQ * A counter within the microcontroller is established wherein the number of transitions or pulses detected by the microcontroller are counted In the preferred embodiment, the counter continues to be incremented if pulses are detected within a two second period Upon elapsing of more than two seconds, the counter is reset to zero This ensures that spurious detections are not accumulated over a relatively long period of time and are then acted upon as detecting a received call by the radio pager At step 14, the counter is compared with a fixed value to determine if sufficient pulses have
- step 16 acts to toggle the state of the switching relay by toggling the state of the TTL (Transistor Transistor Logic) level output at pin PBO ( ⁇ e bit zero of Port B configured as an output port)
- TTL Transistor Transistor Logic
- step 18 the program then proceeds to step 18 wherein the light emitting diode is caused to flash by repeatedly toggling the state of the output pin PA7 (le bit 7 of Port A configured as an output port)
- the flashing of the light emitting diode device is performed for a limited time prior to program control reverting back to step 12 wherein the process of detecting output pulses from the radio paging device resumes again
- Fig 3 provides a block diagram representation of the software program that controls the computer means that is connected to a public telephone network
- the system undergoes an initialisation phase whereafter it enters a continual loop comprising the steps 22 to 38
- the system monitors and answers incoming calls that are made to various unique telephone numbers corresponding to individual subscribers of the remote switching service
- program control is passed to element 24 wherein the computer means extracts subscriber details from a database of such details based upon the call connection number
- Each subscriber is allocated a unique call connection number with aH such call numbers being directed to the computer means
- the computer means can establish the subscriber details based upon the number used to connect to the service Having established the subscriber details, control is then passed to element 30 wherein further verbal instructions are issued to the caller requesting a security code that corresponds to the immobilising unit identification number
- the system receives the secu ⁇ ty code as provided by the caller and compares the provided security code with the security code stored by the computer means for that
- control is reverted back to element 30 wherein the caller is again requested to provide the security code for the particular immobilising unit
- control is then passed to element 34 wherein further verbal instructions are issued to the caller confirming the correct entry of the security code to the system and requesting final confirmation from the caller that an immobilisation signal be transmitted
- This final confirmation provides a further opportunity for the caller to decide whether or not to complete the process of transmitting an immobilising signal to the device and in the preferred embodiment this final confirmation is provided by the system requesting the caller to press the number 9 digit on the numeric keypad of the handset Upon depression of the number 9 key, control is then passed to element 38 wherein the computer means is instructed to initiate a call signal transmission to the immobilising unit If the correct confirmation is not received at element 36 then control is reverted back to element 22 The system then executes the loop continuously
- Fig 3 can be modified to incorporate many other advantages and features including the issuance of verbal instructions to guide callers through the process of altering or modifying the security code for their immobilising unit and the provision of a verbal indication of the status of the immobilising unit by keeping a record of the receipt of instructions to activate the immobilising unit
- the remote switching apparatus may comprise an alternate type of receiver that is responsive to electromagnetic radiation other than radio frequencies
- the remote switching device may be installed in various types of equipment to enable remote control of the equipment This invention need not be limited to simple on/off operation of the equipment and may also be used to remotely control certain aspects of an equipment's operation
- a significant advantage of this invention is its adaptability to the type of receiving means utilised as a component part of the remote switching apparatus In certain circumstances, it is envisaged that different types of radio receiving means will be utilised and in such circumstances, the best and most reliable method of obtaining a signal representative of a calling signal being received by the paging device can be employed with minimal change to the existing system This may be due to lack of supply of a particular brand of paging device or the availability of another device at a lower cost
- the method of obtaining a representative signal from a paging device to indicate reception of a calling signal is found to be of less than adequate reliability then a simple modification to existing units in the field can also be effected with minimal change to the remaining system
- the precise method and conditioning circuitry used to obtain a representative signal from a receiving device can be varied to suit the particular device and for certain commercially available paging devices, this may include alignment of an opto receiving device to detect the flashing of a LED that is inbuilt into the pager
- This invention enables users to remotely switch devices over long distances with the only requirement being access to a telephone capable of communicating with a public telephone network
- the user may remotely control devices with confidence that their control signal is effected with the added security of control of the remote device requiring a personal security code
