Definitions
- the invention relates to electrical connectors and in particular to those mounted on a substrate by exertion of a force thereupon.
- a connector arrangement of the generic type is disclosed in US 5,453,016.
- a multi-row, right-angled connector has a pressing block to connect the angular contacts without soldering to a mounting support.
- the pressing block transmits the press-fit forces to the contacts, which have elastically deformable pins in the connection region.
- the total force which must be transmitted for all the contacts is large. Since the contacts are angular and are arranged in different rows, the contacts are designed differently. If, moreover, the different contacts are arranged very close together, the assignment of the press-fit forces to the individual contacts is difficult to achieve. The risk of non- uniformly press-fitted contacts or of damaged contacts is high.
- the object of the present invention is to specify an electrical connector arrangement in which the contacts are protected against excessively high press-fit forces.
- a connector housing having a connection end face, which can be connected to a component which is complementary thereto; the connector housing has a mounting end face, which can be mounted on a support; the connection end face and the mounting end face are arranged essentially transversely with respect to one another; a plurality of contacts, each of which has a first contact region for making contact with a complementary contact of the complementary electrical component, and each of which has a second connection region for the pressing connection to a plated through- hole in the support; the contacts are arranged in the connector housing such that contact can be made with their first contact region from the connection end face and contact can be made with their second connection region from the mounting end face; a pressure hood is essentially a parallelepipedal part which closes off the connector housing between the connection end face and the mounting end face and which accommodates a transition region of the contacts; the pressure hood is formed in such a way that the connector housing can be mounted onto the support by means of the parallelepipedal part; the pressure hood is arranged such that it can engage in the
- the connector housing enables high stability. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the pressure hood, which can be manufactured as one piece in an injection moulding process, essentially forms a parallelepipedal part with a cavity and supporting elements with feet are formed on two mutually opposite side walls that cooperate with the connector housing.
- the contacts are reliably held in position in the connector housing. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the pressure hood has a multiplicity of ribs which form a multiplicity of slots which each support and accommodate a contact.
- the connector housing can be assembled in a simple manner. This is achieved by virtue of the fact that the pressure hood can be connected to the connector housing by means of a dovetail structure.
- the supporting element has a tongue and the mounting end face has a complementary groove.
- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the front and top sides of the preferred exemplary embodiment
- Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the arrangement of Figure 1 with an open connector housing
- Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the rear side and underside of the arrangement of Figure 1;
- Figure 4 shows a perspective view of part of the pressure hood with a view of the cavity
- Figure 5 shows part of a longitudinal section of the arrangement of Figure 1; and Figure 6 shows a cross-section through the arrangement of Figure 1.
- FIGs 1, 2 and 3 illustrate a multi-pole connector 1 having angular contacts 11 such as is used for contact-making purposes on printed circuit boards.
- the contacts 11 are concealed by the pressure hood 10.
- the pressure hood 10 has been removed in order to display the design of the contacts 11.
- FIG. 3 illustrates the multi-pole connector 1 of Figure
- the electrical connector housing 1 has a connection end face 2 and a mounting end face 3.
- a plurality of contacts 11 are arranged in two rows in the connector housing 1.
- the connection end face 2 and the mounting end face 3 essentially form a right angle.
- the connection end face 2 and the mounting end face 3 arranged at right angles thereto are held together in the region next to the contacts 11 by a reinforcing element 4.
- the contacts 11 comprise a first contact region 12 ( Figure 6) at the connection end face 2, a second connection region 13 at the mounting end face 3 and, in between a transition region 15.
- the transition region 15 of the contacts 11 is surrounded by the pressure hood 10.
- the connection region 13 of the contacts 11 is produced as an elastically deformable metal pin as is known in the art of making.
- Figure 3 illustrates the connection end face 2 matching a multi-pole connector of the kind used in computer equipment.
- the connector housing 1 can be connected to a complementary electrical component, a D-shaped multi-pole connector not shown here.
- two screw-type bushings 7 are fitted on both sides of the connection end face 2 in the region next to the contacts 11.
- the connector housing 1 can be mounted on a support by corresponding to the mounting end face 3.
- Board locks 5 are fitted on both sides of the mounting end face 3 in the region next to the contacts 11 in the reinforcing element 4 and in the mounting end face 3 for the purpose of securing the connection of the connector housing 1 to the support.
- Figure 3 also reveals how the contacts 11 are arranged at right angles between the connection end face 2 and the mounting end face 3 in a third region 15.
- the contacts 11 can be produced from flat strip material by stamping and bending.
- FIG 4 illustrates an interior part of the pressure hood 10 with a perspective view.
- the pressure hood 10 essentially comprises a parallelepipedal part with a cavity 20 which is delimited by two mutually opposite side walls 6 which are connected by a top wall 21 and by a front wall 22.
- a plurality of parallel ribs 23 are arranged in the cavity 20 of the pressure hood 10 and run between the top wall 21 and the front wall 22 in a manner essentially parallel to the side walls 6.
- Parallel slots 24 are formed between the ribs 23.
- a supporting element 16 with a foot 17 is formed on the outside of side wall 6 of the pressure hood 10.
- a groove 19 is arranged, parallel to the main direction of the contacts 11, opposite the mounting end face 3 in the region between the contacts 11 and the reinforcing element 4.
- the free end of the supporting element 16 is designed with a dovetailed tongue 18. This tongue 18 can be pushed into and out of the groove 19 parallel to the mounting end face without using a tool.
- the foot 17 rests on the reinforcing element 4.
- the pressure hood 10 is produced as a single injection-moulded part.
- FIG. 5 illustrates a longitudinal section of part of the connector housing 1 shown in Figure 1 prior to mounting the connector on a support.
- the pressure hood 10 will bear on the connector housing 1 with the foot 17 on the reinforcing element 4 and the dovetailed tongue 18 is engaged in the groove 19.
- the transition region 15 of the contacts 11 is enclosed by the ribs 23 and the slots 24 formed in between.
- the contacts 11 are alternately arranged in a front row and a back row.
- Figure 6 illustrates a cross-section through the connector housing 1 in the region of the contacts 11.
- the connector housing 1 comprises a connection end face 2 and a mounting end face 3 arranged at right angles thereto.
- the two end faces 2, 3 are held together by a right-angled reinforcing element 4.
- the connection end face 2 is provided with a metal shielding sleeve 25 on the side where the complementary electrical connector is received.
- the metal sleeve 25 serves to reinforce the connection end face 2 and to screen against electromagnetic interference.
- the contacts 11 are twisted a number of times in the first contact region 12 in order to be able to receive the contacts of the complementary connector (not shown) .
- the pressure hood 10 extends with a top wall 21 and a front wall 22 between the connection end face 2 and the mounting end face 3.
- the contacts 11 run in a front, outer row and a back, inner row.
- the pressure hood 10 has ribs 23 on the front wall 22 and on the top wall 21. Slots 24 are formed between the ribs 23. Each rib 23 and each slot 24 located in between alternately accommodate and support a respective contact 11 of the back, inner row and of the front, outer row.
