AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 28 November 1996 (28.11.96); original claims 1-19 replaced by new claims 1-22 (5 pages)]
1.- Method for communicating with a vehicle, characterized in that it comprises coupling a module (12) with at least a transmitter and a receiver to the vehicle (11) and using therefore in combination at least three communication networks, a first one being a wide area paging network (1), a second one being a cellular mobile communications network (2) and a third one being a local network (17) using a spread spectrum modulation method.
2 . - Method according to claim 1, characterized in that a signal (9) is sent via one of the three networks (1, 2, 17) to the module (12) and a reply signal (4) is automatically transmitted back via one of these three networks (1, 2, 17).
3.- Method according to claim 2 , characterized in that a signal (9) is sent via the paging network (1) to the module (12) an a reply signal (4) is automatically transmitted back via the cellular mobile communications network (2), the last mentioned network (2) being switched off during stand-by operation to guarantee the privacy of the vehicle (11) during the stand-by operation.
4.- Method according to claim 2 or 3, characterized in that the reply signal (4) transmitted back by the module (12) is used for identification of the vehicle (11).
5.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the communication paging network (19) is a so-called ERMES (European Radio Message System).
43
6.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the cellular mobile communications network (2) is the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network.
1 . - Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the wide area paging network (1) is used for the bulk communication and the cellular mobile communications network (2) is used for bidirectional data communication towards and from the vehicle (11).
8.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the third network (17) is a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Acess) network.
9.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a third network (17) is used which comprises a receiver which is used to receive data from a nearby beacon in a reliable way and a transmitter which is used to send data to a nearby receiver in a reliable way, whereby the chipping codes of the transmitters of several modules (12) are different to enable a receiving beacon to recognise and differentiate the data coming from each receiver that is a member of the population of receivers in the vicinity of the said beacon.
10.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the communication is used for localization.
11.- Method according to claim 10, characterized in that for the purpose of the localization of a module (12) the following information is used to correlate towards a localisation:
44
- the timing information inherent to the cellular mobile communications network (2) protocol and which is available in the module (12) and which is sent back to a service center (15), which timing information is correlated towards a distance from the network (2) base stations;
- the fieldstrength and the identity of the paging network (1) base station recorded at the moment where the above timing information is extracted out of the mobile communications network (2), which strength is correlated towards a distance from the paging network (1) base station in the vicinity of the module (12).

16.- Method according to claim 15, characterized in that a control module (22) is used comprising an interface which uses a cryptographic transformation for both authentication
45
and data security in the communication with the electrical system of the vehicle (11).
17.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the data from or to at least one of the communication networks (1,2 or 17) are digitally signed for authentication.
18.- Method according to either one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a cryptographic transformation is made by means of a so-called public key and also a private key, as well for transmitting the signal (9) via the paging network (1) as for decrypting the signal (4) received via the cellular mobile communications network (2).
19.- Module to be used by the method according to either one of the preceding claims and to be mounted on the vehicle (11) to communicate with the vehicle (H). characterized in that it comprises an interface (20) with a paging network (1), an interface with a cellular mobile communications network (2) and an interface with a third local network (17) using the spread spectrum modulation method.
