Abstract

The invention provides a method for treating a mammal affected with a central or peripheral condition which is ameliorated by blocking serotonin activation of the 5-HT7 receptor. The method comprises administering an effective amount of a 5-HT7 receptor blocking dose of a herein disclosed ergoline compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable addition salt thereof. Conditions amenable to treatment according to the method of the invention are those ameliorated by blocking serotonin binding to the 5-HT7 receptor, including cardiovascular shock, septic shock, hypotension, hypovolemia, renal disorders, diarrhea, spastic colon, IBS, IBD, circadian rhythm dysfunction, depression, schizophrenia, migraine headaches and sleep disorders. The compounds of the invention also provide a method to further probe and characterize the role of serotonin throughout the mammalian body.
