  • the screw head 54 has a thin integral flange 56 having a diameter that makes for a sliding fit in the central opening 28 of the guide tube 12.
  • Such fastener elements 44 are delivered to the construction site in a preassembled condition with the washer attached at a fixed location on the screw so that all fastener elements are substantially similar. Because it is desired to have repeatability in operations when using these fastener elements, the central hub 58 of the washer is fabricated in a manner to provide a turn- resistant connection to the screw threads.
  • the conical cradle formed by the multiple bevelled surfaces 40 centers the washer about the axis 16. This centering section is complemented by the centering provided by the flange 56 in the opening 28 of the guide tube 2.

  • the undulations in the washer provide stiffness which is advantageous in holding insulation layers on a substructure when external forces come into play, for example, walking on an insulated roof.

  • a power driver (not shown) is inserted into the guide tube 12 through the end 62, and a socket on the end of the driver mates with the hex head of the screw head 54 and rotates the screw.
  • the washer 48 does not rotate with the screw 46, because engagement of the circumferential edge 60 with the bevelled surfaces 40 prevents rotation of the washer 48 after the washer has seated in the cradle formed by the bevelled surfaces 40. Therefore, when rotated, the screw overcomes any resistant connection between the washer hub 58 and the threaded portion 50 of the screw, and the screw 46 advances through the washer until engagement is made by the drill tip 52 and threads 50 with the substructure to which attachment, for example, of an insulation layer, is to be made.
  • the holding power of the pin surfaces 40 may be affected by the bevel angle 43 that is set between the imaginary radius 42 and the bevel edge 45.
  • the bevel surfaces 40 tend to interfere more with the washer edge 60 when the angle 43 is not a right angle.
  • the combination of installation tool 0 and fastening element 44 is pressed against the outer surface of the insulation layer (not shown) so that the screw 46 penetrates until the planar face 22 of the installation tool 10 presses on the outer surface of the insulation layer. Then, rotation of the screw advances the screw while the washer is held stationary by the bevelled surfaces. The outer surface of the insulation layer is not damaged as the washer does not rotate.
  • magnets 30 in the installation tool 0 have been described above, it should be understood that in alternative embodiments in accordance with the invention, the magnets may be omitted whether steel or plastic washers are used.

Abstract

Cet outil de montage, destiné à des éléments de fixation préalablement assemblés, procure, lors de sa mise en place, un alignement entre la rondelle et la vis et empêche la rondelle de tourner avec celle-ci. Cet outil possède une surface de support destinée à la rondelle ainsi qu'un tube de guidage destiné à recevoir la tête ou la tige filetée de la vis. Des aimants, encastrés dans la surface de support, maintiennent dans l'outil, dans un état d'assemblage total, une rondelle d'acier ainsi qu'un élément de fixation de vis. Une pluralité de broches placées près du périmètre circonférentiel de la surface de support possèdent des surfaces coniques ou biseautées, lesquelles constituent ensemble un berceau de centrage automatique pour la rondelle. Les broches coniques établissent un contact local avec le bord circonférentiel de la rondelle. Lorsque la vis est tournée par un outil à moteur raccordé à l'outil de fixation, la rotation de la rondelle dans l'outil est empêchée par l'interférence entre le bord périphérique de la rondelle et les surfaces biseautées des broches.
