Abstract

A predetermined arrangement of differentially lubricous areas on a balloon catheter for controlling against unexpected movement when in situ in the body.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 16 November 1994 (16.11.94); original claims 1-6, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19 and 20 amended; new claims 21-28 added; remaining claims unchanged (4 pages)]
1. In a balloon catheter of the type including a shaft and a balloon associated therewith, the balloon having a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a central portion, the improvement comprising including a first lubricous means with said balloon catheter, said first lubricous means being bonded to the balloon catheter and being constructed and arranged to provide relatively more lubricity with respect to a major portion of the shaft than with respect to at least a portion of the balloon.
2. The catheter according to the claim 1 wherein the first lubricous means is constructed and arranged to provide a lubricous coating on the shaft portion and at least a portion of the balloon thereof is uncoated.
3. The catheter according to claim 2 wherein the central portion of the balloon is uncoated.
4. The catheter according to claim 3 further including a lubricous coating on the distal end portion of the balloon.
5. The catheter according to claim 4 wherein the proximal end portion of the balloon also includes a lubricous coating.
6. The catheter according to claim 1 wherein the first lubricous means is constructed and arranged to provide a lubricous coating on the shaft, said catheter further comprising a second lubricous means constructed and arranged to provide a lubricous coating on at least a portion of the balloon, said lubricous coating on the balloon being less lubricous than the lubricous coating on the shaft.
7. The catheter according to claim 6 wherein the more lubricous coating comprises a polyethylene oxide composition.
8. The catheter according to claim 6 wherein the less lubricous coating comprises silicone.
9. The catheter according to claim 6 wherein the less lubricous coating is only on a central portion of the balloon.
10. In a balloon catheter of the type including a shaft having proximal and distal ends, a balloon comprising a balloon body having a central portion, and opposite ends, said balloon further including a cone and a waist at each end, said balloon catheter further including a distal tip portion, surface areas and lubricous coatings associated with the surface areas thereof, the improvement comprising a predetermined arrangement of more lubricous and relatively less lubricous coatings on the surface areas of the catheter, whereby the shaft is provided with a relatively highly lubricous coating bonded to a substantial length thereof extending from the balloon toward the proximal end of the shaft, both cones of the balloon are provided with a similar relatively highly lubricous coating as is the distal tip portion, while at least a substantial portion of the balloon body is coated with a lubricous coating that is relatively less lubricous than said highly lubricous coating.
11. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein the highly lubricous coating is comprised of a polyethylene oxide composition.
12. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein the less lubricous coating is comprised of silicone.
13. In a balloon catheter of the type including a shaft having proximal and distal ends, a balloon comprising a balloon body having a central portion, and opposite ends, said balloon further including a cone and a waist at each end, said balloon catheter further including a distal tip portion, surface areas and lubricous coatings associated with the surface areas thereof, the improvement comprising a predetermined arrangement of more lubricous and relatively less lubricous coatings on the surface areas of the catheter, whereby the shaft is provided with a relatively highly lubricous coating bonded to a substantial length thereof extending from the balloon toward the proximal end of the shaft, and wherein the entire balloon body is uncoated.
14. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein the entire balloon body is coated with the less lubricious coating.
15. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein the central portion of the balloon body is uncoated.
16. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein only the central potion of the balloon body is coated with the less lubricious coating.
17. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein the proximal end portion of the shaft is uncoated.
18. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein at least the distal waist of the balloon is also coated with the highly lubricous coating.
19. The catheter according to claim 18 including the same highly lubricous coating on the proximal waist of the balloon.
20. The catheter according to claim 10 wherein only the distal cone is coated with the highly lubricous coating.
21. The catheter according to claim 20 wherein the central portion of the balloon is uncoated.
22. The catheter according to claim 20 wherein the central portion of the balloon is coated with the less lubricous coating.
23. In a balloon catheter of the type including a shaft and a balloon associated therewith, the balloon having a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a central portion, the improvement comprising including a first lubricous means bonded to said balloon catheter, said lubricous means being constructed and arranged to provide relatively more lubricity with respect to a major portion of the shaft than with respect to at least a portion of the balloon.
24. The catheter according to claim 23 wherein the lubricous means is constructed and arranged to provide a lubricous coating on the shaft portion and at least a portion of the balloon is uncoated.
25. The catheter according to claim 24 wherein the uncoated portion of the balloon is the central portion thereof.
26. The catheter of claim 23 including a second lubricous means which is relatively less lubricous than the first lubricous means.
27. The catheter according to claim 26 wherein the first lubricous means comprises a polyethylene oxide composition.
28. The catheter according to claim 26 wherein the second lubricous means comprises silicone.
