Definitions
- This invention relates to the use of an ester oil, in a fabric softening composition comprising a quaternary ammonium or a ine fabric softening material, to impart ease of iron and anti-crease benefits to fabric treated with the softening composition.
- Rinse added fabric softener compositions are well known. Typically such compositions contain a water insoluble amine salt and/or a quaternary ammonium fabric softening agent dispersed in water at a level of softening agent up to 7% by weight in which case the compositions are considered dilute, or at levels from 7% to 50% in which case the compositions are considered concentrates. Quaternary ammonium materials with long chain substituents have been used in fabric softening compositions for many years. Often they are used in conjunction with co-actives such as fatty acids or other relatively cheap materials which also provide softening benefits.
- fabric softening compositions desirably have other benefits.
- GB 1 601 359 ( Procter and Gamble ) describes the use of esters as an ingredient in a fabric softening composition which also comprises a cationic surfactant selected from various specified groups.
- the ester is one of a number of nonionic fabric lubricants suggested.
- the esters are esters °f C 12 _ 24 fatty alcohols and mono or polycarboxylic acids, whereby the total number of carbon atoms in the ester is equal to or greater than 16.
- the specification makes no mention of ease of iron or anti-crease benefits.
- GB 1 550 205 (Procter and Gamble) disclose formulations containing silicones, cat.ionics and glycerol monostearate. The specification states that ease of ironing and softening benefits may be obtained without the ester oil when other nonionic softeners are substituted for the glycerol monostearate.
- EP 0 000 406 ( Procter and Gamble ) describes a concentrated liquid fabric softener comprising a fabric substantive agent and a fabric softening component.
- One of the fabric softening components claimed is a fatty ester of a mono or polyhydric alcohol having from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain, and mono or polycarboxylic acids having from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms in the ester is equal to or greater than 16 and that at least one of the hydrocarbon radicals in the ester has 12 or more carbon atoms.
- ester oil is to deliver fabric softening
- the abstract contains the unsupported statement that the fabric softener can deposit onto fibres to provide textile handling benefits inclusive of softening, static control, ease-of-ironing, fluffiness, pliability and smoothness.
- an ester oil in a fabric softening composition comprising a quaternary ammonium or amine fabric softening material to impart ease of iron and/or anti-crease benefits to fabric treated with the fabric softening composition.
- the softening material is a quaternary ammonium or amine compound with two long chain groups connected to the quaternary or amine compound with two long chain groups connected to nitrogen via ester links.
- the presence of the ester oil increases the anti-crease and/or ease of iron benefits that may derive from use of the fabric softerming material without the presence of ester oil.
- the ester oil is a fatty ester of a mono or polyhydric alcohol having from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain, and mono or polycarboxylic acids having from 1 to about 24 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain with the proviso that the total number of carbon atoms in the ester oil is equal to or greater than 16 and that at least one of the hydrocarbon radicals in the ester oil has 12 or more carbon atoms.
- the fatty acid is a naturally occurring one, such as rape oil.
- Ester oils most suitable for use in the present invention are the PRIOLUBES from Unichema.
- PRIOLUBE is the PRIOLUBES from Unichema.
- PRIOLUBE 1407 which is a neopentyl glycol monomerate, is particularly useful.
- the fatty acid mixture for this ester is called in the oleochemical industry "monomer fatty acid" and derives from the dimerisation of rape oil (eruca low) fatty acid or oleine from tallow. In the dimerisation process, dimer, trimer acids and so called monomeric acids are formed.
- a fabric softening composition comprising a softening material and a material which can deliver ease of iron benefits to a fabric in the rinse stage of a fabric washing process characterised in that the softening component is a quaternary ammonium or amine salt material with two long chain groups connected to the quaternary nitrogen via ester links and the ease of iron benefit is imparted by an ester oil both the softening material and the ester oil having excellent biodegradability.
- the fabric softening composition comprises a water insoluble cationic which is a compound having two C 12 _ 28 alkyl or alkenyl groups connected to the N atom via one or more ester links.
- ester-linked quaternary ammonium material for use in the compositions according to the invention can be represented by the formula:
- each R x group is independently selected from C ⁇ alkyl, hydroxyalkyl groups or C 2 _ 4 alkenyl groups; and wherein each R 2 group is independently selected from C 8 _ 28 alkyl or alkenyl groups; and n is an integer from 0-5.
- the level of ester linked quaternary ammonium compounds is at least 1% by weight of the composition, more preferably more than 3% by weight of the composition; especially interesting are concentrated compositions which comprise more than 7% of ester-linked quaternary ammonium compound.
- the level of ester-linked quaternary ammonium compounds preferably is between 1% and 80% by weight, more preferably 4% to 32%, most preferably 6% to 22%.
- the level of ester oil is preferably 4 to 32 wt%, most preferably 5 to 15%.

- the nonionic stabiliser has an HLB of between 10 and 20, more preferably between 12 and 20.
- the level of nonionic stabiliser is within the range from 0 to 10% by weight, more preferably from 0 to 5% by weight, most preferably from 0 to 4% by weight.
- the mole ratio of the quaternary ammonium compound to the nonionic stabilising agent is within the range from 40:1 to about 1:1, preferably within the range from 18:1 to about 3:1.
- compositions of the invention are liquids comprising an aqueous base.
- the composition can also contain a co-active for example C 8 - C 24 alkyl or alkenyl monocarboxylic acids or polymers thereof.
