Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for absorb- ing moisture in a container whose walls are provided with stiffening folds forming vertical grooves on the inside of the walls.
- the invention further concerns a moisture- absorbing device for implementing the method.
- a prior-art moisture-absorbing device for use in a container consists of a bag of cloth containing a mixture of a moisture-absorbing agent and a liquid-absorbing agent.
- the moisture-absorbing agent consists of flakes of calcium chloride, and the liquid-absorbing agent consists of particles of an agent marketed under the trade name of Skamol.
- Such bags are sandwiched in between the goods in the container.
- the bags are, however, fairly unwieldy and in addition completely unprotected when placed in the con ⁇ tainer, and are thus easily damaged and torn. Since the bags are placed in the goods, e.g. between sacks of salt, they may become completely shut off from the air from which moisture is to be absorbed.
- One object of the present invention is to provide a method for absorbing moisture in a container, which obviates, or at least considerably reduces, the drawbacks indicated above.
- this object is achieved by a method for absorbing moisture in a container whose walls are provided with stiffening folds forming vertical grooves on the inside of the walls, said method being characterised by arranging, in at least one of the ver ⁇ tical grooves, a moisture-absorbing device in the form of a tube which is closed at the ends and made of a fine- meshed steel-wire netting and which contains a moisture- absorbing agent and a liquid-absorbing agent.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, easy-to-handle device for implementing the method.
- a moisture-absorbing device in the form of a tube which is closed at the ends and made of a fine-meshed steel-wire netting and which contains a moisture-absorbing agent and a liquid-absorbing agent.
- the tube is divided, in its longitudinal direction, into an upper chamber containing the moisture-absorbing agent, and a lower chamber containing the liquid-absorbing agent and communicating with the upper chamber via a liquid-per ⁇ meable partition.
- the device When intended for use in a steel container, the device is preferably provided with a magnet means for fix ⁇ ing it in one of the vertical grooves on the inside of the container walls.
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a moisture-absorbing device according to the invention.
- Fig. 2 shows a corner area of a container accommodat ⁇ ing two devices of the type shown in Fig. 1.
- the moisture-absorbing device 1 illustrated in Fig. 1 is made of a fine-meshed steel-wire netting and is in the form of a tube of rectangular cross-section.
- the tube is closed by a plastic lid (not shown) at each end and has, in its central portion, a transverse partition 2 which is made of a fine-meshed steel-wire netting and divides the tube into an upper chamber 3 and a lower chamber 4.
- the upper chamber 3 contains a moisture-absorbing agent in the form of flakes of calcium chloride, while the lower chamber 4 contains a water-absorbing agent in the form of particles of an agent marketed under the trade name of Skamol.
- These flakes and particles are larger than the meshes of the steel-wire netting forming the tube, and are thus retained in the tube, while air may enter. Since the flakes and the particles are also larger than the meshes of the steel-wire netting forming the partition 2, they are retained in the respective chambers 3 and 4, while liquid may pass through the partition 2.
- a magnetic tape 5, fixed to the rear side of the tube serves to fix the device in a steel container 6, of which a corner area is shown in Fig. 2.
- the magnetic tape 5 is glued to the tube, but may also be fixed in some other way, e.g. by means of a double-adhesive tape. It is also possible to replace the magnetic tape 5 with a per ⁇ manent magnet arranged on the inside of the rear wall of the tube.
- a sufficient number of devices 1 of this type are disposed in the vertical pockets or grooves 7 formed on the inside of the container walls by the stiffening folds of the container 6.
- the devices 1 are placed on the bottom of the container 6 and are retained against the wall (the bottom of the groove 7) by the magnetic tape 5.
- the device 1 is well protected when thus arranged in the groove 7. Conveniently, it is placed in a groove 7 in a wall where condensation primarily takes place. If to be replaced, the device is easily accessible and is also par ⁇ ticularly easy to handle.
- the cross-sectional area of the tube of the device 1 is small ⁇ er than that of the groove 7, so that the air from which moisture is to be absorbed may readily pass through the device.
