Abstract
A method and apparatus for deciding deductively a bed structure from a dispersion curve of a Rayleigh wave. A vibration generator and first and second vibration receivers are disposed at predetermined intervals on the ground surface of a zone to be investigated. The vibration generator generates vibration having a predetermined single frequency or vibration containing various frequencies into the bed of the zone as the object of investigation, and a Rayleigh wave is generated by this vibration. The propagation time of this Rayleigh wave is measured by the first and second vibration receivers, and the phase velocities of the Rayleigh waves with various wavelengths are determined from these measurement values. The outline of the function f^¨B7(z) representing the mode of changes of the bed structure of the place as the object of investigation is calculated using these phase velocities of the Rayleigh waves, and the bed structure is decided from the point of inflection of this function f^¨B7(z) and its maximum value.
