Abstract

A multilayer 'leather-like' laminated composite with improved qualities of chemical resistance after abrasion, toughness and flexibility is disclosed. The basic building block is comprised of a fluoropolymer film combined with an impregnated nonwoven substrate. A four layer composite is disclosed which is made of a first layer of film (10) principally comprising PTFE laminated to a second layer (12) comprising an impregnated non-woven substrate, a third barrier layer (14) laminated to the non-woven substrate and a fourth layer of woven glass (16) substrate coated with a fluoropolymer is laminated to the barrier layer. In addition, a five layer embodiment adds a layer of fluoropolymer-containing film (20) adhered to the fourth layer of woven glass substrate. The composites are useful in the manufacture of protective articles and garments in which flexible, abrasion and chemical resistance qualities are desired.
