Definitions
- This invention relates to a latching system for selectively opening and closing the hinged lid portion of a hardsided luggage case.
- Typical luggage cases include latches and the like. These may comprise a series of claw bolts which span the joint between the lid and base of the case and draw the two together on the operation of an over-center lever.
- Other systems employ pivotally mounted lift levers which operate sliding bolts.
- Each of these bolts includes a latch hook receiving cavity. In the open position this cavity aligns with the latch hook and permits its movement out of the cavity on the pivotal opening of the lid. In the latched position the draw bolt cavity engages the protruding portion of the hook, thus preventing opening of the lid of the case.
- a pair of latch hooks are operated by buttons set in recesses in the console portion of the base of the luggage, case.
- Each latch hook and button arrangement is spring biased in the direction of the protruding portion of the latch hook.
- the protruding portion of the hook withdraws from the engaging lip of the cavity in the lid of the case, thus releasing the hook from engagement with the lid and the lid can be opened.
- this spring biased plunger often called a "pop-up"
- the pop-ups prevent the lid of the case from immediately being engaged again by the latch hooks when their respective operating buttons are released and the spring bias permits the latch hooks to return to their latched position. Without the pop-ups, the latch hooks would again engage the lip of their corresponding cavities and the case would again be locked.
- each latch hook has a sloped cam surface.
- the lip of the respective cavity engages this cam surface to force each latch hook simultaneously back against its normal spring bias.
- luggage cases with the latching system described above include a lock (either key operated or combination type operated by a series of numbered dials) to prevent the unintended opening of the case.
- a lock either key operated or combination type operated by a series of numbered dials
- Such locks can merely position a lever or detent in a position to prevent the lift levers or draw bolts from moving, thus preventing releasing the lid of the case.
- Such locks especially in combination locks, are relatively delicate.
- the lift levers can apply considerable mechanical force on the relatively delicate locking mechanisms.
- the locking mechanism can thus be damaged by any attempt to force the lock open.
- the draw bolt mechanism can be damaged, perhaps even to the point of preventing the operation of the latch when the correct combination is dialed into the combination lock.
- latch hook and pop up mechanism which has few parts, is simple to manuf cture, and provides a positive an sure release and latch operations. It is another object of the invention to provide a latching mechanism for a luggage case which requires very little force on the lid of the case to bring the lid of the case into the latched position. It is another object of the invention to provide a latch hook operating system which can be placed in a locked condition by operation of a conventional key or combination type lock in a manner that prevents the case from being forced open or damaged in an attempt to override or overpower the lock.
- the invention comprises a latching system of a luggage case which includes an arm for operating a movable latch hook means which in turn engages a strike plate in the lid of the case.
- the improved latching system of the subject invention comprises an operating arm capable of movement along its longitudinal axis and also capable of movement perpendicular to its axis.
- the invention also embraces a latching system for alternatively holding and releasing a lid of a luggage case to the base of the luggage case.
- This system includes a strike plate having a lip for selectively engaging a protruding portion of the latch hook.
- This strike plate is mounted in the lid of the case and the latch hook is mounted in the base portion of the case.
- the latch hook has at least two positions. The first position is one wherein the protruding portion of the latch hook engages the lip of the strike plate and a second position where this protruding portion of the latch hook is positioned away from the lip.
- the system further includes a pop-up.
- the pop-up has a portion for pushing on the lid of the case to move lid away from the base, and a second portion for alternately holding the latch hook in its second position and for releasing the latch hook to permit the latch hook to move to its first position wherein the latch hook engages the lip of the strike plate.
- Figure 2 shows a partial sectional view of the top of the luggage case, taken along Line II-II of Figure 1, disclosing an operating system in accordance with the instant invention.
- Figure 3 shows the operating mechanism from a top view with portions of the handle assembly removed.
- Figure 4 is another view of the operating mechanism shown in Figure 3.
- Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 but showing the operating mechanism in the locked or off combination condition.
- Figure 6 shows a latching system employed in the case of Figure 1.
- Figure 7 shows the latching system of Figure 6 in a top view.
- FIG 8a is the latching system of Figure 7 as viewed along line VIII- VIII.
- Figure 8b is a similar view showing the latch in a cocked position.
- a luggage case 1 comprises a base shell 2 and a lid shell 3, hinged to the base shell by hinges (not shown) along the edge opposite from that shown.
- the shells preferably are molded of plastic, either by injection molding or vacuum forming. Between the shells 2 and
- a frame member 4 which includes a console portion which in turn includes lift levers 6 set in a pair of cavities 8. Between the lift levers is a handle 5 for carrying the case and a conventional combination lock 7 and key operated lock 9 positioned below the handle as is common.
- a seam 10 is defined between the lid shell 3 and frame 4. This seam 10 may include a sealing gasket but is more likely to be defined by a tongue-in-groove engagement between the lid shell 3 and the upper edge of the frame 4.
- the lift lever 6 is shown in greater detail to comprise a loop-shaped handle portion 11 positioned opposite pivot 12 to bar 14.
- the loop-shaped handle portion 11 defines a lever arm considerably longer than the distance between the pivot 12 and the bar 14.
- a latch hook 20 and pop-up 22 (Fig. 3) are shown positioned towards the center of the case. As will become more apparent, the seam 10 between the lid shell 3 and the base shell 2 is latched together with a series of such latch hooks 20 and pop-ups 22. However, for simplicity only one is shown.
- the latch hook 20 is operated by the operating arm 15 via detent 24 which normally projects into the path of tang 16 carried by the operating arm 15.
- a coil spring 18 is provided, one end of which engages a fixed point on the frame, and the other end engages an upstanding tang 19 on the operating arm 15.
- the coil spring 18 provides an upward or a sideward force (relative to the long axis of the arm 15) on the operating arm 15 through the tang 19 and simultaneously provides a force to the right as shown in Figure 2.
- the bar 14 engages upstanding portion 13 of the operating arm 15.
- a bolt 34 operated by combination lock 7 and shown schematically in Figures 3-5, normally rides along the lower edge of slot 17 without interfering with the normal longitudinal movement of the operating arm 15 to and fro during its operation by the lift lever 6.
- a key operated rotary lock 9 the bolt 40 of which includes a moon-shaped cam surface 42, is normally positioned above an upstanding tang 43 on operating arm 15.
- the cam surface 42 be operated to press downwardly on upstanding portion 43, or the combination lock operated bolt 34 be moved downwardly to engage the lower edge of the slot 17 (by placing the lock "off combination"), the arm 15 is moved slightly downwardly against the sideward spring bias of spring 18. This condition will be detailed with reference to Figures 4 and 5.
- Figure 4 shows both operating arms 15 and 15a which have complimentary shaped portions which engage one another, as can be seen in the central portion of Figure 4.
- Operating arm 15a is operated identical to but is of course moved in an opposite direction from operating arm 15 by its own lift lever mechanism (not shown).
- Operating arm 15a also has corresponding coil spring 18a to provide a sideward and axial directed spring biasing.
- Combination lock operated bolts 34 and 34a are shown riding without interference within the corresponding slot portions in each of the bolts. However, should the combination lock 7 be placed in an "off combination" condition, the operating bolts or detents 34 and 34a are moved downwardly. With them move the innermost ends of the operating arms 15 and 15a against the relatively gentle spring biasing of their respective springs 18 and 18a. Thi causes the arms 15 and 15a to move perpendicular to their normal direction of movement
- the latch hook operating tangs 16 and 16a are well below and out of engagement wit the respective latch operating detents 24 and 24a.
- eac of the tangs 16 and 16a can be moved generally axially via their respective arms, but suc movement will have no effect on the latch hooks since the respective tangs 16 and 16a wil pass beneath each of the detents 24 and 24a.
- Forcing the latch levers 11 is completel ineffective. No untoward force can be applied to the combination lock 7 since th operating arms 15 and 15a are free to move their full distances without interference by th respective locking mechanisms.
- the latch hook 20 is shown here together with its operating mechanism 24.
- the overall mechanism 24 is mounted in a slot in the frame 4 of the luggage case.
- the latch hook 20 itself projects through this slot and into a strike plate 50 which is in turn positioned in a slot at the lower edge of the lid shell 3.
- the strike plate includes a cavity
- the latch hook 20 can be operated as was detailed with respect to Figures 2 and 3, or it can be operated by a cable 27 in the case where the latch hook mechanism is located remote from the front console of the case. Cable 27 can itself be moved by a latch hook detent similar to 24. Cable operating detent 24a, when engaged by tang 16a on the operating arm 15a, can itself operate other similarly constructed latch mechanisms through second cable 28.
- the latch hook 20 is formed preferably in one piece with the detent 24.
- the structure includes a biasing spring 30 which normally urges the spring hook 20 into its latched condition as shown.
- the front portion of the latch hook includes a protrusion 32 which normally fits above a corresponding protrusion 32 which is formed in one piece with pop-up 22.
- Pop-up 22 includes a torsional spring 33 which places a clockwise spring bias on pop-up 22 about its pivot axle 35.
- the upper portion of protrusion 25 normally engages the lower face of protrusion 25 because of the spring bias provided by spring 33, although Figure 8a shows these separated for clarity.
- the latch hook 20 is now held in a cocked position, that is, it is ready to pass without interference back into the cavity 52 in the strike plate 50 without the necessity of the operator pushing down on the lid to force the latch hook back as in the prior art latching system.
- the force required to latch the case is only that necessary to overcome the slight spring bias of spring 33 and the f rictional engagement between the ends of protrusion 25 and 32, and then only to the extent necessary to move protrusion 25 past protrusion 32.
- the pop-up 22 provides two functions.
