Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a desk top unit which provides storage facilities for items of stationery and, combined with that, a copy stand.
  • An object of the invention is to provide a novel storage unit combining storage spaces for storing stationery items in such a way as to allow the unit to be particularly compact while still storing useful amounts of stationery with the unit also being so adapted that it may be used as a copy stand and it thus provides an efficient and convenient companion for a typist.
  • a desk top unit comprising a plurality of spaced support trays for the storage of horizontal stacks of paper or similar items of stationery characterised in that the front edges of the trays are staggered rearwardly one above the other to provide an inclined copy stand for supporting reading matter.
  • the unit includes a number of trays arranged in spaced apart relation one above the other some of which are adapted for holding sheets of paper of standard size e.g. A4 or US A4 and others of which are partitioned into smaller compartments for storing sundry items of stationery such as paperclips, staples or pens and the like.
  • a storage compartment for storing paper or envelopes vertically is provided by a storage space which extends vertically through the upper tray or several of the upper trays to a lower tray.
  • a storage space which extends vertically through the upper tray or several of the upper trays to a lower tray.

  • the space is thus defined by the edges of the aperture in the upper tray or trays and the floor of the lower tray.

  • the rear surface of the V makes an angle of about 135 in the upstanding side portions and about 157° in the recessed centre portion.
  • the front surface of the V is afe an angle of about 45° to the vertical throughout its width. This recess facilitates the removal from the trays of the paper or other items stored therein.

  • the rear portion 44 partly defines a storage space which may be used to store such items as envelopes or sheets of paper in a vertical configuration. To achieve this, an aperture is provided in the floor of the tray of the rear portion so that items may be stored vertically extending through the floor and resting on the floor of the tray 6 below.
  • the floor of one or both of the lower trays 4 or 6 may also be provided with apertures aligned vertically below the aperture in tray 8 so that such items may extend through trays 4 and 6 and rest on the tray below.

Referring to Figure 2, it can be seen that the rear wall 50 of the topmost tray is inclined to the vertical so as to guide items being placed in the rear storage unit towards the front of the unit away from the space between the trays 8 and 6.
  • tray 6 is also inclined to the vertical so that its proper edge is horizontally staggered behind the lower edge of the wall 50. This feature reduces the likelihood of items falling out of the back of the unit as they are inserted into the rear storage space. It can be seen from Figure 2 that tray 6 is provided with a widthwise internal wall 48 to separate items stored in the tray from items stored in the rear portion.
  • the trays are held one above the other in spaced apart relation by self-locking spacers 10, one of which is illustrated in section in Figure 4.
  • the spacer consists of a central spacing portion 16 and upper and lower hooks 18. Between each hook and the central portion is a shoulder 17 which, when the spacer is fitted between two trays, with the upper or lower edge of the side wall of the trays to hold the trays apart.
  • the hooks 18 engage with sleeves 32 disposed on inside faces .of the side walls of the tray. As can be seen in Figure 2, the part of the side walls of each of the trays extends beneath the floor level of each of the trays.
  • Trays 4,6,8 have mounted on this lower extension of each of the side walls two sleeves 32.
  • Each of trays 4 and 6, which have to be connected to a tray both above and below are provided with sleeves 32 at the top and bottom of their side walls.
  • Tray 2 which is only connected to another tray above it has only sleeves 32 at its top edge and tray 8 which only connects to trays below it has only sleeves near its lower edge.
  • Sleeves on the lower edges of the trays are placed on the parts of the side wall which extend beneath the floor level and sleeves on the upper edges of the side walls extend only part way down the wall. In this way, the storage space on each of the trays is clear of projections from the side wall which cut down the storage space and may snag on paper being inserted into the trays.
  • the unit is assembled by inserting the hooks 18 of the self-locking spacers through the sleeves until the shoulder 17 abuts the edge of the side wall of the tray and the hooks 18 snap behind the end of the sleeves.
  • the unit would not then usually be disassembled, although if desired it could be disassembled by levering the hooks 18 through the sleeves 32.
