Definitions
- the present invention relates to a pump system for placing in explosively dangerous regions on board a tanker comprising two tandem pumps, of which a first pump which is submerged in the cargo in a freight tank, is driven by a hydraulic motor via a short shaft which passes through a pressure medium-controlled drainage chamber, while a second pump which is freely disposed in the explosively dangerous region is driven by an electric motor via a short shaft which passes through a pressure medium-controlled drainage chamber which motor is provided with a surrounding housing through which fluid flows.
- explosively dangerous region is to be understood in particular deck areas of the tanker above cargo tanks of the ship. However, there will also be a corresponding explosively dangerous region in the so-called pump rooms in such instances where the second pump is placed in such a room.
- the said first pump which is submerged in the cargo and which is driven by a hydraulic motor, is preferably of that construction which is illustrated and described in Norwegian Patent Specficiation No. 123,115.
- the said first pump of the preferred construction is specially protected against admixture of cargo medium in the drive medium of the pump and against admixture of drive medium in the cargo medium respectively, controlled via the pressure medium- controlled drainage chamber together with a coopera ⁇ ting pressure medium-controlled "cofferdam" or shield chamber.
- the said second pump which is placed on the ship's deck (which generally can constitute an explosively dangerous region) and which is driven by an electric motor, is particularly exposed to the danger of explosion, since in combination with the motor and its electrical connections it is easy for spark for ⁇ mations to occur which can ignite the gases in the explosively dangerous region and particularly gases which have penetrated into or are formed in the electric motor.
- the aim is a parti ⁇ cularly simple and operatively reliable solution which is made possible by the combination of the said first, hydraulically driven pump and the second, electrically driven pump.
- the pump system according to the invention is characterised in that the housing is passed through by hydraulic pressure medium which is supplied from the return conduit from the hydraulic motor of the first pump.
- drive medium of the first pump which is delivered from the return side of the hydraulic motor, as circulating protective medium for the electric motor of the second pump, there can be obtained a simple and effective instal ⁇ lation with a plentiful supply of protective medium and thereby with an effective circulation in the motor housing of the electric motor, without special control means.
- the motor housing of the second pump is put into a branch conduit from the return conduit from the hydraulic motor of the first pump, with a back pressure valve arranged in the feed portion of the branch conduit, while there is in ⁇ serted in a portion of the return conduit, which runs parallel to the branch conduit, a pressure regulating valve.
- the safety valve in the portion of the return conduit coupled in parallel can form a similar stop against the transfer of wear dust from the motor housing of the second pump to the motor housing of the first pump, at the same time as a suitable amount of the available return oil is regu ⁇ lated in a short circuit path outside the motor housing of the second motor.
- a first pump 12 which is driven by a hydraulic motor 13 via a relatively short drive shaft 14.
- the motor 13 with bearings (not shown) of the drive shaft 14 is received in a motor housing 15 (illustrated with broken lines) .
- a drainage chamber 16 between the motor housing 15 and a pump housing 17 which surrounds a pump rotor 12a on the lower end of the drive shaft 14.
- a shield chamber 20 (cofferdam) having a conduit connection 21 parallel to the pump conduit 19 to the deck 18 of the ship.
- low pressure conduit 23 are shown in a freely disposed arrangement, but in practice it is preferred that the supply conduit 22 passes centrally inside the return conduit 23, while the return conduit 23 for its part passes internally in the conduit connection 21 to the ship's deck.
- the illustrated pump 12 can be designed corre ⁇ spondingly as shown and described in Norwegian Patent Specification No. 123,115, both with respect to construction and mode of operation.
- the pump conduit 19 and conduit connection 21 with associated conduits 22, 23 are led through the deck via a head 24 from which the pump conduit 19 extends with a conduit stump 19a to the inlet 25 to a second pump 26 (booster pump) arranged on the ship's deck while the conduit connection 21 leads via a conduit stump 21a to a suitable outlet on deck or at a suitable distance above and/or outside the deck.
- a pump conduit 27 extends further to a suitable (not shown) delivery location outside the ship.
- the said second pump 26 has a pump rotor 26a which is driven via a short shaft 31 from an electric motor 30.
- the motor 30 with portions of the shaft 31 and associated bearings 32 is received in a motor housing 33. Between the motor housing 33 and housing
- the motor housing 33 is surrounded over the whole length of the rotor of the motor and a distance behind the rotor of the motor by an extra protective jacket 37 which defines flow passage 38 from the inner hollow space 39 of the motor housing 33 to an outlet chamber 40 from which there extends an upper outlet conduit 41 to the downstream end of the return conduit 23, while there extends from the upstream end of the return conduit 23 a branch conduit 42 to the bottom of the motor housing 33 in front of the jacket 37.
- a back pressure valve 43 which prevents low pressure hydraulic oil from running backwards to the hydraulic motor of the first pump.
- a pressure regu ⁇ lating valve 44 which prevents low pressure hydraulic oil from running backwards to the hydraulic motor of the first pump.
- a conduit 51 extends via a safety valve 52 to a mix of pumps 53 with an associated pressure regulating valve 54.
- an overflow conduit 55 extends back to the tank 45, there being * inserted in the conduit 55 a back ' pressure valve 56.
- the high pressure conduit 22 extends via a safety valve 58 to a quantity regulating valve 59 and from the valve 59 directly to the motor 13 of the first pump 12.
- the quantity regu ⁇ lating valve 59 is arranged in the illustrated embodi ⁇ ment within the outlet chamber 40 of the protective jacket 37. From the valve 59 a low pressure branch conduit 60 runs back to the return conduit 23.
- the drive medium and the cargo can be maintained separately from each other by means of relatively simple means and with the use of simple control measures.
