A new and distinct Rudbeckia plant having cupped to quilled, golden-colored ray florets, a short, rounded habit, and excellent vigor.
Description
Botanical classification: Rudbeckia hirta.
Varietal denomination: ‘Lion Cub’.
The present invention is a new and distinct Rudbeckia plant having the varietal name ‘Lion Cub’. Rudbeckia is in the family Asteraceae. ‘Lion Cub’ is a selection from a planned breeding program that originated from a controlled cross between unnamed, unpatented, and proprietary Rudbeckia hirta seedlings. The seed parent has a small habit with semi-double, yellow-orange flowers. The pollen parent has a medium habit with semi-double, gold flowers.
Compared to the annual Rudbeckia plant named ‘Maya’ (unpatented), the new cultivar is more gold colored than yellow and is more consistent in height and flower form. Compared to Rudbeckia plant named ‘Henry Eilers’ (unpatented), ‘Lion Cub’ is an annual, not a perennial, has fully double flowers and is much shorter than ‘Henry Eilers’.
The new variety has only been reproduced by asexual propagation (cuttings and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by cuttings and tissue culture using standard micropropagation techniques with terminal and lateral shoots performed in Canby, Oregon shows that the characteristics and distinctions described herein come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The following is a detailed description of the new variety based on observations of 6-month-old plants that were grown outside under full sun in Canby, Oregon (USDA Zone 8). Temperatures range from a high of 35° C. in August to a low of 0° C. in January. Normal rainfall in Canby, Oregon is around 1 m per year. Color references are based on The 2007 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London, 5th Edition.
