Abstract
A new and distinct Calibrachoa cultivar named ‘DANOAVIOLT’ is disclosed, characterized by a mounded growth habit and very well branched plant form. Plants produce an abundance of large violet flowers with dark purple veins and center. The new variety is tolerant of high temperatures above 28° C. The new variety is a Calibrachoa, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Calibrachoa sp.
Variety denomination: ‘DANOAVIOLT’.
The new Calibrachoa cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Calibrachoa varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The open pollination resulting in this new variety occurred during January of 2012.
The seed parent is the, unpatented, proprietary variety referred to as Calibrachoa ‘cv.12-2756’. The pollen parent is unknown as it was an open pollination breeding program. The new variety was discovered in October of 2012 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2012 crossing, in a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by terminal vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel in October of 2012 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in more than 20 successive generations.
The cultivar ‘DANOAVIOLT’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DANOAVIOLT’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DANOAVIOLT’ as a new and distinct Calibrachoa cultivar:

- 1. Very well branched plant.
- 2. Mounded growth habit.
- 3. Large flower size.
- 4. Abundant flowering.
- 5. Flower color is violet with dark purple veins and center.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DANOAVIOLT’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, Calibrachoa ‘cv. 12-2756’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DANOAVIOLT’ differ in the following;

- 1. Mounded growth habit, whereas the seed parent has a semi-trailing growth habit.
- 2. Larger flower size than the seed parent.
- 3. Flower color is violet with dark purple veins and center, whereas the seed parent has solid blue flowers.
- 4. More flowers than the seed parent.
- 5. More branches than the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DANOAVIOLT’ are comparable to the unpatented commercial variety Calibrachoa ‘DANOA20’. The two Calibrachoa varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DANOAVIOLT’ differs in the following:

- 1. Larger flowers than the comparator.
- 2. Mounded growth habit. The comparator's growth habit is semi-trailing.
- 3. Flowers are violet with dark purple veins and center and light yellow throat, whereas the comparator has flowers that are blue with a white throat.
- 4. More flowers than the comparator.
- 5. Earlier flowering than the comparator.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DANOAVIOLT’ can also be compared to the patented commercial variety Calibrachoa ‘DANOA60’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,987. The two Calibrachoa varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘DANOAVIOLT’ differs in the following:

- 1. More flowers than the comparator.
- 2. Mounded growth habit. The comparator's growth habit is semi-trailing.
- 3. Flowers are violet with dark purple veins and center and light yellow throat, whereas the comparator flowers are violet-blue with a white throat.
- 4. Wider and shorter leaves than the comparator.
- 5. More branches than the comparator.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DANOAVIOLT’ grown in a nursery, in a 13 cm pot. Age of the plant photographed is approximately 60 days from a rooted cutting.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2001 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DANOAVIOLT’ plants grown outdoors and in greenhouse during the Spring Summer and Autumn, in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The growing temperature ranged from 18° C. to 35° C. during the day and from 15° C. to 25° C. during the night. General light conditions are bright, normal sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
