Abstract
A new cultivar of Agapanthus plant named ‘Brilliant Blue’ that is characterized by flowers having dark blue petals with a darker blue center stripe, a compact dwarf habit, a long flowering season, short peduncles and short pedicels.
Description
Botanical classification: Agapanthus hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘Brilliant Blue’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Agapanthus plant botanically known as Agapanthus hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Brilliant Blue’.
‘Brilliant Blue’ originated from open pollination of the female or seed parent plant Agapanthus campanulatus ‘Lapis’ (not patented). The male or pollen parent plant is unknown. The resulting seeds were subsequently harvested and grown. ‘Brilliant Blue’ was selected as a single plant from within the stated progeny in a controlled environment in Waitara, New Zealand in 2002.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘Brilliant Blue’ first occurred by division in 2005 in Waitara, New Zealand. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Agapanthus cultivar ‘Brilliant Blue’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘Brilliant Blue’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from other existing known varieties of Agapanthus.
-
- 1. Agapanthus ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits a large number of flowers having dark blue petals with a darker blue center stripe.
- 2. Agapanthus ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits a compact dwarf habit.
- 3. Agapanthus ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits a long flowering season.
- 4. Agapanthus ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits short peduncles and pedicels.
The closest comparison cultivar is the female or seed parent plant Agapanthus ‘Lapis’ (not patented).
‘Brilliant Blue’ is distinguishable from ‘Lapis’ by the following characteristics:
-
- 1. ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits flowers that are darker blue in color than the flowers of ‘Lapis’.
- 2. ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits a smaller overall height and width than ‘Lapis’.
- 3. ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits peduncles that are shorter than the peduncles of ‘Lapis’.
- 4. ‘Brilliant Blue’ exhibits pedicels that are shorter than the pedicels of ‘Lapis’.
The accompanying photograph illustrates the distinguishing traits of Agapanthus ‘Brilliant Blue’. The plants in the photograph show an overall view of a 3 year old plant grown outdoors in Waitara, New Zealand. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
The following is a detailed description of the new Agapanthus cultivar named ‘Brilliant Blue’. Data was collected in Waitara, New Zealand from 3 year old outdoor grown plants. The time of year was Summer in the Southern Hemisphere and the temperature range was 18-25 degrees Centigrade during the day and 6-12 degrees Centigrade at night. The light level was natural outdoor light. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species. ‘Brilliant Blue’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
