Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Perovskia plant named ‘CrazyBlue’, characterized by its violet-blue colored flowers, greyed-green colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, compact-mounded growth habit, is disclosed.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Perovskia atriplicifolia.
Variety denomination: ‘CrazyBlue’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Perovskia plant botanically known as Perovskia atriplicifolia and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘CrazyBlue’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Hem, The Netherlands during September 2009. The objective of the breeding program was the development of compact, well branched Perovskia.
The new Perovskia cultivar is the result of open-pollination within an insect-caged environment. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is a Perovskia atriplicifolia species selection, not patented and not coded, characterized by its violet-blue colored flowers, greyed-green colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, compact-mounded growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is from a group of Perovskia atriplicifolia species plants, not patented and not coded, selected primarily for their well-branched growth habits and further characterized by violet-blue colored flowers, greyed-green colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, mounded growth habits. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated open-pollination during August 2010 in a controlled environment in Hem, The Netherlands.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since August 2010 in Elburn, Ill. and Hem, The Netherlands has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘CrazyBlue’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Perovskia plant:

- 1. Violet-blue colored flowers;
- 2. Greyed-green colored foliage; and
- 3. Moderately vigorous, compact-mounded growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female and possible male parents primarily in have a better branched and more compact growth habit.
Of the many commercially available Perovskia cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is Lacey Blue ‘Lisslitt’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,845. However, in side by side comparisons, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Lisslitt’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar are shorter than plants of ‘Lisslitt’; and
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have a darker colored calyx than plants of ‘Lisslitt’.
In addition, plants of the new cultivar can be compared to plants of ‘Little Spire’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,643. In side by side comparisons, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Little Spire’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 3. Plants of the new cultivar are shorter than plants of ‘Little Spire’; and
- 4. Plants of the new cultivar have larger flowers than plants of ‘Little Spire’.
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘CrazyBlue’. The plants were grown in one-gallon containers for 14 weeks in a greenhouse in West Chicago, Ill. Plants were given two pinches, one prior to and one at transplant.
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2007 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in August 2013 under natural light conditions in West Chicago, Ill.
The following descriptions and measurements describe plants produced from cuttings from stock plants and grown in a glass-covered greenhouse under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. The plants were grown in Elburn, Ill. in one-gallon containers for 14 weeks utilizing a soilless growth medium. Plants were given two pinches, one prior to and one at transplant. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 70° F. to 77° F. (21° C. to 25° C.) during the day and approximately 65° F. to 68° F. (18° C. to 20° C.) during the night. Greenhouse light levels of 2,500 footcandles to 6,000 footcandles were maintained during the day. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
