DLR.- V. GOETCHINS, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 98,250, dated December 28, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the game.
lo all 'it-hom 'it may concern Be itknown that I, D.'R. V. GOELCHINS, of Little Falls, in the county ot' Herkimer, aml State ot' New York, have invented a new and improved Detachable Head-Restl'or Chairs, 85e.; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a tull, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled iu the art to make and use thc same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure `1 represents a. side elevation ot' my improved head-rest' t'or chairs, Soc.
Figure 2 is a front view, partly in section, of the same. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a headrcst which can conveniently be secnred'to the lbacks of railroml-ehairs, common chairs, sofas, 85e., and which can as conveniently bc detached.
The invention consists in the use ot' a clamp fastened upon the upper-'edge of the chair-back, and suporting two posts, to which the ends ot' a cushion or i exiblc strap are. swivelled, iu such manner that such cushion or strap, which constitutes the head-rest, can be inclined at :my angle, and adjusted to any desired height, to suit the comfort ot' the person using it.
A, in the drawing, represents a plate, made ot' metal, orother suitable u'laterial, aud bent in such manner that it will t'orm a trough that can bc fitted upon theupper end of a chair-back, to embrace the same in tbemauner indicated in the drawing.
By means ot'a leather 'strap,.]5, or by set-screws or other suitable devices, the plate A can be readily secured to the chair-back.
I prefer using the strap B, because it does not injure the chair, while screws, &c., may destroy the polish.
The strap is laid entirely'around the back, asin iig. 1, and buckled, or otherwise secured.
Around or to each post is fitted a vertically-adjustable slide or sleeve, D, and to each sleeve is pivoted, by a. pin, b, a bar. E.
The two bars E E form the en/ls-ot` the cushion or head-rest F, whichmay be a piece ot' canvas or other fabric, or a regular cushion.
The head-rest can be turned on the pivots b. in any suitable direction, and on the slides or sleeves it can be adj usted vertically and clamped at any height by set-screws c, formed on said slides. ,The entire devicecaube readily removed from the chair, and folded together ,by withdrawing the posts from the plat'e A, and will be a -very convenient companion for travellers ou railroads, Ste.
The head-rest may be attached to the post direct, if desired, wit-hout the useot' the sleeves and setscrews. v f
vHaving thus described my invention, I
I claim as new, and desired to secure by Letters Patenti 1. The combination ot plate A and posts G C, connected together by sockets and studs, as shown anddescribed.
2. A removable rest, F, lumgfadjustably between two detachable-posts C C, which are supported upon a separate 'pl-ate,.A, .by means ot' studs and corresponding sockets, in .the manuel' specitied.
