Leners Patent No.' 95,195, dared December 21, 1869.
IMPROVEMENTIN FARM-GATES.
The Schedule referred to :ln these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SCOTT, of Yane, in the county ot' Logan, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates;
and I do hereby declare thatl the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being.
` same, so that when closed, the upper hinge may be relieved of all strain and weight, and thus prevent the swaying or leaning of the gate-post; and, also, in so` constructing the hinges, that during the winter-season, the gate may be adjusted to swing over the snow.
In. the drawing;
Figure l is a t'ront view of my gate,closed and fastened, and the upper hinge relieved; j
Figure 2 is a front view of the same, unfastened, and ready to be swung open; and
Figure 3 is an inside faceview of the front gatepost.
A is the gate;
B, the back gate-post; and
C is the front gatepost.
The gateA, I construct in the ordinary manner, and across its front', place a long bar or lever, D, bolting one end to the back end of the gate, and allowing' its' opposite end to project past the front end ofthe gate, as shown in l and'l.
Near the rear end of the lever D,.I attach to it an arm or plate, c; and near the front end, I' connect an upright slotted handle, a, pla-ying on the stud b on` the gate, as clearly shown iu iigs. l and'2.
To the rear gate-post B, instead of theordina-ry hinges, I attach two elongated bows or staples, e and f, and through the latter, near its upper end, I pass a pin or key, y, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. f
The gate A, I connect to the lower staplev f, by means of. au ordinary hinge, h, and to the upper staple, by a link, c', attached at its inner end to the arm c of leverD.
By this arrangement, it will be seen that if the front end ofI the lever Dis depressed, the arm c will pull upon the link t, and of the gate toward the staple, and, consequently, elevate its front end. As the lever is raised, thev linkI is released, and the front end of the gate allowed to drop down.
`and 'throwing the entire weight `used in connection v'with instead of `with the staples described, as the hinges,
front end, resting on the draw the upper rear corner To the'front bar ot' the gate, I attach a block, m,
under which theend ot' the lever is engaged,when ther front end of the gate is to beheld up.
To the inner face of the post O, I secure two blocks,
g', having their outer ends bevelled, and provided in their upper edges withnotches n, iig. 3.
To close the gate, the lever D is depressed/t0 throw up the front end, and thel gate swung to; the lever is then thrown up, and the projecting ends of the bars will drop into the notches n, thus securely fastening the gate, and, at the same time, relieving the link t', upon hinge h and blocks j, as shown in iig. 1.A
To open the gate, the lever is again depressed, when the link is brought into action, and the front end raised, disengaging the bars from blocks j, and the gate. left free to turn. v
The handle (t is for operating the' lever'f'rom the outside of the gate.
In thismanner, I relieve the upper end of the gatepost from all strain, except when the gate is open, and thus prevent the swaying or leaning of the post, and
consequent dragging of the gate upon the ground, as
happens where the post is subject to a constant strain, and, at the same time, produce. a' strong and simple locking-device.
During the winter-season, when itis desired to havethe gate swing above the snow, or in pastures, where small stock are to bel allowed passage, to the exclu# sion ot' cattle, and otherlarge stock, I raise the gate, and place the key g below the hinge 71, thus supporting the gate in that position. When the gate is adjusted, as described, another and lower pair ot' bars engage in the notches n, but the'gate operates otherwise, as before.
It is, obvious that my lever-arrangement may be ordinary hinges, vit' desired,
have'nothing to do with parts. y
Havingthus described my invention,
1. The 4combination of the leiter I), provided with its handle a and arm c, with the link i and staple e, as set forth.
2. The gate' A, provided witlrthe projections ou its y catches j,`when thenpper hinge is made adjustable, substantially as described.
. SAMUEL SCOTT.
