CHARLES B. LOVELESS, 0F sYRAonsnNEvv YORK.
Letters Patent N0.'98,17 4, dated December 21, 1869. j I
GAS-GENERATOR AND BURNER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. Lovnnnss, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Generators and Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figi-ire 1 is a vertical section through the centre of the invention and supply-tube; v
Figure 2 is a plan view of the cylinder, filled with holes, at which point the gas is burned, also showing the tubes conveying the gas to the burner, from the generator.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of double pipes and generator, to convey the oil to the generator, where it is converted into gas, and conveying the gas to the burnenall of'which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
To enable others skilled in the art: to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the construction of my invention, in fig. 1, A is the supply-pipe, for conveying the oil from thereservoir to the generator. The red linesin said pipe indicate the packing, to assist in regulating the flow of oil.
B, the regulating-screw. I
O, the joint, for connecting the pipes and. the screw B.
D, the inside pipe, which conveys the oil up to the bulb. or generator F, where the oil is converted into as. g A second pipe, E, surrounds the inner pipe D, and is screwed into the bulb or reservoir F, gas-tight, and
which is also at the lower end screwed into the cent-re of the burner, from which are hollow arms a 11,
joined to the cylinder or burner, through'which pipe and arms the gas is conveyed from the generator to the burner, where the gas is represented as burning in red lines in fig 1, and letters I) I), whichalso shows the burner hollow.
. The top of the burner is perforated with holes, as
seen in fig. 2, at which point the gas is burned, as
seen in fig. 1. I
To the lower end of the burner is attached a holder, H, to support the chimney G.
In the operation of my invent ion, the oil having" been put into a reservoir, it is turned on by turning the cock B, when it passes up the inner .pipe D to the generator F, where it is converted into' gas, and
descends in the outer pipe E to the open arms a a,
and enters the burner hb, and is burned, as seen in once generate the gas, and, with the chimney on,
when once started, it will continue to burn as long as desired.
By this arrangement, it will beseen that I make a very cheap and brilliant light, and one that isperfectly safe.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, 1
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' The combination of the pipes D and E with generator F, supply-pipe A, and burner b h, and chimney G, substantially asdescribed, and operating as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above-described invention asan improved gas-generator and burner, I
have hereunto signed my name, thisv day of 1869.
. CHARLES B. LOVELESS. Witnesses:
EVERETT R. LEWIS, HORACE WHEATON.
