JAMES B. AYER, OE ELIZABETH, NEWJERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 97,586, dated December 7,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEIIING--MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES..
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. AYER, of Elizabeth,
in the county of Union, and State of New Jersey, havel invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving- Mechanism for Sewing and other Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference rbeing had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a front elevation of my improvement, and
Figure 2, a vertical cross-section of the same. Similar letters ofI reference denote like parts in the different views. I A A is the frame, upon which rests the table B.
C is the belt-wheel, which turns upon an axis, a,
secured at right angles to, and at the extremity of a hanger, I).
Said wheel is provided with' a bevelled pinion, E, and is held upon the shaft by means of a pin or nut, b.
I is the driving-wheel, which is slightly. concave on one side, and convex on the other, the latter provided with bevelled cogging, which meshes into the pinion E, and imparts motion to the belt-wheel C.
This wheel h is provided with right-angled spokes and hub, as seen at G,'g. 2, which are secured to the rim by meansof screw-bolts c c, andis mounted upon a shaft, H, which has its bearings in two hangers, I I. The wheel is free toi-evolve uponsaid shaft.
One e'nd of the shaft passes through one of the hangers, I', some distance, and is provided with a ratchet-wheel, J', which is secured by a feather, or otherwise.
' rlhe shafts extremity is squared, and a key or crank applied thereto, for turning the' same, the hanger I having hung upon it a pawl, K, which takes into the ratchet,J, and holds ythe same from turning in but one direction.
A spring, L, is fixed within the hollow wheel F, one end being securely fastened to the axis or shaft H,
and the other looped around one of the bolts e, so that thespring being wound up,'aud the brake' disengaged, as will be, presently described, power and motion are limparted to the wheelE.
M is a small hanger, to which is pivoted the brake N, one end provided with a treadle-loop, (l, for lifting the other away from contact with the periphery of the belt-wheel.
Over the contact or friction-end of this lever is arranged (upon the under side of the table, and to which all the hangers are secured,) a strong spring, c, which holds the brake down upon the wheel` C.
Anotherhanger, 0,-extends down this spring, and is bent at right angles, and provided with a vertically-moving thumb-screw,'f, by means of which the amount of friction and speed may be regulated.
rIhe belt P, passing around the wheel C, is carried over the drive-wheel of the sewing-machine; and it is only necessary to wind up brake, when the model seamstress will begin her work. l
Having thus described the construction and operation of my improved driving-mechanism,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent isl. The wheel F, constructed as described, and provided with the spring L, shaft H, and ratchet J, in combination with the beltwheel Gand brake N, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Constructing the driving-wheel as described, and arranging within the same the power, substantially in the manner and for thc purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the driving-mechanism, the brake N, for regulatingthe speed of the belt-wheel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 11th day of September, 1869.
