.GEORGE L-ownnlwA or BROOKLYN', NEW YoRK.
.Letters .Patent No. 96,128, dated October 26, 1869.
IMPROVED VELOCIPEDE.
The Schedule referred to m these Letters Patent and making part of the san c To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE LQWDEN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Velocipedes; and I do declare that the following" is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in velocipedes, and, consists iu. the method in which power is applied for driving it.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation, looking .frornlhe line :c-x of iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding ing the pawls.
Their back ends extend back over the axle, and are weighted, so that when the weight is removed from the saddle or from the foot-pieces, they tip down and raise the pawls, and thus allow-them to take a new hold.
When the weight of the rider is thrown either upon the saddle orvupon the foot-pieces, the pawls act upon the ratchet-wheel, and rotate the. axle.
The pawl g is made with a heavy back end, so that its point isv kept in const-ant cont-act with the ratchetwheel.
The motion of these vibratingv frames h and J 'is limited in their upward movement by the iiexible cords l l, attached to the reach.
M represents the reach, through the back end of which the .axle loosely passes.
Through its forward end, thesteering-post N passes in the usual manner.
The steering is done by means of a second steeringpost, O, in front of the rider, which is provided with a cross-handle, hf
This post also has a cross-bar, q, and the two posts are connected together by means of the rods fr r, from Ythe cross-bar to the steering-post N, so that the steering-post N partakes of the motion given the l post O.
S is a brake on the steering-wheel, which is operated by means of the cord T, which is wound up by turning the steeringlhandle p in the post 0.
As before stated, motion is given the velocipede by working the pawls in the ratchet-wheel, as the weight y ofthe rider is' thrown alternately upon tllesaddle and upon theVfoot-pieces.
This operation gives him the motion andexercise of a horseback ride.
No crank is employed, and consequently the vehicle 'may be started at any point, and the operating parts being attached to and supported by the main axle, there is .nothing likely to break or get out of order.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and ydesire to secure by Letters Patent, isf- 1. In combination with a veIUcpede, the ratchetwheel E, pawls f and g, and yokes h. and J, arranged and operating on the axle A, substantially as dcscribed.
2. In combination with the ratchet-wheel E and weighted yokes h and J, the reach M, post O, brake v S, and rods fr, arranged substantially as described, for
the purposes set forth.
