Description

Letters Patent No. 95,387, elated September'QS, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STYEAM-GENERATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all lwhom it may concern:
lBe it known'that I, NOAH SHAW, of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire, and in the State of Wiscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Generators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in conducting a current of water from a steam-boiler around the iirebox, by means of hollow grateibars, generating steam in said bars, and conducting the steam back into the boiler, in a manner that will be hereinafter fully set forth; and also in the construction and use of an auX- iliary grate-bar which will be fully'described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, tomake and use the saure, I will now proceed to describe its constructionV and operation, referring -to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical cross-section, and
Figure 2, a perspective view of a steam-boiler with my improvement attached.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the auxiliary gratebar, and
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-section, showing the manner in which the auxiliary grate-bar is used.
A represents a steam-boiler made in any of the known and usual ways, and of any size or dimensions desired.
B is the furnace or lire-place under said boiler.
On each side of the boiler A are attached three pipes-done, C, near the frontV end; one, D, at or near the centre; and the third, E, near the rear end of the boiler.
These pipes are all-connected with the boiler on a line about the centre of the boiler, as seen in fig. 2.
The front pipe C runs horizontally outward so as to come 0n the outside of the furnace or re-box, then downward perpendicularly, so that its lower end will come below the level of the fire-box.
It is then turned inward and runs under the fire-box to about the centre of the saine. Here it is turned upward for a very short distance, and then placed in a tortuous position, running back and forth at the bottom of the fire-box, forming one-half of the grate, then up along the same side ofthe fire-box, continuing its tortuous or winding course the whole height of the same, until it, at last, connects with the centre pipe D.
rlhe half of the grate thus formed by the tortuous pipe C is not horizontahlbut slightly inclined upward toward the side, although being in a plane parallel with the boiler longitudinally, as seen in iig. 1.
There being one pipe, C, as above mentioned, on
each side of the boiler, and both running in the same manner and shape, it will be seen that the entire bottom and sides of the fire-box are thus provided with hollow grate-bars connected with the boiler.
rlhe water in the boiler passes through the pipe O, and is, during its passage under and at the side of the fire, converted into steam, which,by the inclined position of the pipe in the bottom of the fire-box, is caused tc ascend through said pipe and pass into the boiler through the pipe D.
Thus a continuous current of water may be kept passing from the boiler, this water converted into steam, and the steam and water returned to the boiler.
At a suitable point in the pipe O, is,A a check-valve, a, which allows the water to flow freely in the direction above described, but prevents it from going in the opposite direction if such should be its tendency.. y
. I do, of course, not confine myself to th'e vspecific t'urns or bends of the pipe C, as above set forth, but desire to include any, substantially the same in its construction, whereby a current of water may be passed from the boiler through suitable means or devices embodying the elements of this invention, under and at the side of the fire, thereconvexted into steam, and, with the water, returned to the boiler.
The pipe E also leads outward-and downward from the boiler on one side, passes in rear of the {ire-box,
` where it takes a tortuous or winding course back and forth between the bridge-wall and the boiler, inclining upward toward the other side, thence out, and enters the boiler on the opposite side from where it left the boiler. Water passes in like manner through this pipe from the boiler, is converted into steam, and in this condition, with the water, returned to the boiler. This pipe is also provided with a check-valve, b, to allow or cause the current to flow only in one direction.
Between each coil of the pipe C that forms the grate in the lire-box, is placed an auxiliary grate-har, d, the sides of which are curved inward, as shown in figs. 3 and 4|, and provided with curved ribs e e, so as to fit on the 'pipe C. The ribs e e are placed at any suitable distances apart, forming air or draught-holes for the tire.
The advantages of this arrangement are obvious. The grate-bars are preserved from' burning out too rapidly, and are kept comparatively cool even with the hottest fire. Then more steam can be made with less fuel than in ordinary boilers, and hence the expense is materially lessened.
Having thus fully described my invention,
NVhat I claim-as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Passing acontinuous current of water through Ly i suitable devices, from a. steam-boiler under and at the side of the fire, converting it into steam, and returning the steam and water into the boiler, substantially :n: herein set forth.
2. Passing n continuous current or water through suit? 1ole devices from a. steam boiler, between the bridgo-well and seid boiler, converting it into steam,
and returning the steam and water into the boiler,l
6. The combination of the boiler A with pipes and D7 connecting seid boiler with the inclined pipe o1' pipes running along the bottom and sides of the firebox B, substantially as herein set forth.
7. One or more tortuous pipes connected together in on inclined position in the space between the bridgewall and the boiler, substantially es herein set forth.
8. rlhe combination of the boiler A, :md the pipes E E connecting said boiler, with the inclined pipe or pipes running back and forth in the space between the bridge-well and the boiler, substantially es herein set forth.
